Drew, what does your competitive schedule look like the rest of the year?

Looks like diapers man. lol

I'm playing a one-day local event on October 21st....sadly, that's probably it for the year. There are 2 other big events I had on my schedule in late October and mid November, but both are Saturday-Sunday events and I just don't have the flexibility to swing that at this point in time. Hoping for big things next spring/summer.

I can imagine how difficult it is with a newborn! I just have a wife and 2 dogs, and it gets tough. I try to plan my competitive season schedule early so my wife and office know well in advance. I only have the Kansas Mid-Amateur left in two weeks and then the season will be over before I know it.

I miss the days of "just" a wife and a dog! haha we joke about that, because we'll all be on the couch and my son will start crying and our dog will give us the most exasperated looks like "hey guys, remember how cool it was when it was just us three?" hahaha he's a great dog (german shepherd) and he's dealing with the lack of attention very well, but yeah, it's a totally different world now.

The lifesaver is that my wife's parents live here in town, so they've agreed to babysit (wife will be back part-time at work by then). I feel bad asking them to do that so I can go play golf, but they're just as crazy about him as we are, so it's all good. I'm just hoping I'll be able to get a couple rounds in leading up to the event!

Looks like you've had a pretty sweet year, how you feelin going into the Mid-Am? How does the course set up for you?

PS, nice win against the Ducks!

Season has gone by crazy fast. Can't believe there's only like a month left off the back Tees at my club. Then a county trial in November but probably just 3 comps left

In no time at all, you can take your son with you to the course. And if you're lucky enough to have your son love golf, then you will be able to go with him as much as you want.

This is my dream Jacob. :)

Another benefit of the garage driving range - another couple months and I can plop him down in a chair and have him watch me hit balls. Another few months after that, who knows, he might be trying to copy dad! With any luck, he'll be shallow and rotated by age 2 :) haha

My son loved golf until he hit teenage years. He will still play with me occasionally, but he is a little distracted with other endeavors at the moment. But playing with him is by far the most fun I have on a course. I would rather shoot 95 playing with him than shooting in the 70s playing with anyone else.

Great thread Drew! I had a couple of online lessons with Dana and I'm working on those wrist conditions as well. I am similar to you, when I focused on flexion rather than ulnar deviation I can hit the ball fairly well, but when I get my right hand to ulnar deviate is when things can bad. Thanks for sharing man, I'll be following along.

This is a really cool, quick look at one of the reasons for Dana's swing pattern. Sweet spot far away from lead shoulder helps create speed!

  • 3 weeks later...

Drew - I also get laid off in back swing. I am taking online lessons with Dana. Having trouble getting in the right position especially with my right elbow. It looks to me like you go to P2 then go straight up. Is that roughly what Dana has you doing in the back swing?

He seems to say that in this Be Better Golf video at the 11:00 mark:

Drew, still working on Dana's stuff?

Yup, I've made some modifications to fit into something I can take to the course, but the pattern is still what Dana has taught me.

Yeah, I find for me it's pretty much all about the wrists in the backswing and transition. Trying to get a little more radial deviation in the backswing and flexion/ulnar deviation in transition.

Here's the latest:

I originally had one more tournament on my schedule for 10/21, but due to the baby, things at work being very busy, and my wife going back to work part-time herself, I have only played twice since July, the last time being a few weeks ago, and I just don't know if it'd be a great idea to throw some money down and "see what happens" in a competitive environment just yet. I was hoping to get out this Sunday to see where the game is at, but it's very windy this weekend and I'm not sure it would give me much of an idea about how ready I am to compete. I haven't ruled it out completely, as the in-laws have offered to babysit that day, but as of right now I don't think I'm going to be playing. If I can somehow get out for 9 holes or something and things feel good....then maybe.

Really hoping I'll be able to get out more in the spring/summer! I'm hitting it nicely in the garage at least haha :)

Wow looks great. What is your intent from the top of the swing?

Thanks! If we're getting really mechanical, it's a combination of left knee to target and simultaneous flexion of lead wrist. I find I can accomplish both of those pretty well when I just focus on trying to leave the hands up top, or having a slight pause in transition though, so I'll do some mechanical/slow-mo stuff where I actually focus on those things, then also practice hitting shots where I'm just mildly aware of pausing at the top. That at least lets me focus on the shot (external focus) rather than internal focus on mechanics.

Figured in the spirit of "updates" I'd keep you guys posted on changes in the bag as well. Just pulled the trigger on a PING Ketsch Mid mallet, which is replacing a TaylorMade Daddy Long Legs that I've used for the past two years.

I'm not sure how many of you follow Not allowed because of spam (EDIT: lol, woops, I should say "the other site" whose name includes a reference to this sport and espionage, ahem), but their testing always intrigues me. The Ketsch putters have done very well the last two years, so my interest was piqued. I finally went in to a couple different golf shops in town and did some testing. I tried out both the larger mallet and the mid mallet, both in the heavy and regular weight (385g vs 355g I believe). I wasn't thrilled with any of them to be honest. The feel of these putters isn't exactly buttery, and while I liked how easy they were to align, I just wasn't all that impressed with their performance. Then I found the Mid mallet (regular head weight) with an oversize PING/Winn grip and it was a night and day difference for me! Started making everything. I hit putts for about 20 minutes from a variety of distances, and just found it to be incredibly easy to align and very stable through the stroke. The feel still isn't my favorite, but making putts is, so it's in the bag!

I took it out to a practice green on a course near my house for about an hour today just to verify the results in the real world, and it held up beautifully! The greens were a bit shaggy from the recent overseed, and normally I struggle a bit when I have to add some oomph to putts, but no troubles at all with this thing.

I'm a line on the ball putter, so putting this thing down behind the ball just feels too easy. Point and shoot!

Now if I can just get out to play...... :golfer:

very nice, I've always enjoyed putters with 3 lines the width of the ball. this seems like a good compromise with using a line on your ball too as the main line is longer and more noticeable.

Yeah it lines up really nicely with the line I make on the ball. Looks much better to my eye in that regard than the TaylorMade DLL

my buddy has same putter and makes everything with it

No issues with lags in my brief experience, but I'd say inside 15 feet is where it really shines. Feels like if I read it right, it's going in.

Hey Drew,

Do you apply the same movement patterns with your short game now? I ask as a broken leg has me chipping and pitching around the house...

No definitely not. Half shots, wedges, pitches etc need a much more on-plane takeaway (no time to re-route). I use the Dan Carraher inspired short game method for the most part.

Good stuff, Drew. Glad to hear with risking the danger of plunging down the rabbit hole, you've managed to tweak some of the advice that now has you in a good place. Before you know it, you'll be a member at a club so you can bring junior to the course! Also, from the first Dana visit, nearly 100mph 6i, wow!
