Well, I had thought about a Callaway experiment, and then was all like...why???

So I traded the Callaway stuff I had been trying out and picked up a used set of Mp-4's instead. I also chopped down the Mp-650 driver just a hair and added some tape. It now plays at 44 3/8th's and feels great. The 650 fairways continue to be stupidly good, so those are going to be permanent residents in my bag. I picked up another Mp-650 fairway at 13.5 degrees and will likely throw another Grafalloy Blue 75 in it and set it up to play like a Stenson fairway/driver.

  • 1 month later...

Eh, so two surgeries in a month have killed the rest of the golf season for me. Something to remember - never ignore swelling for too long and don't listen to doctors who want to "wait and see if it improves." Anyway, the only thing left for me now is planning ahead to next season and prepping a new setup.

So, mostly everything is staying, but I want to trick it out a little with a modern/old school twist. Things I want to try:

1) Fairway woods get some steel shafts. Some of the Nippon steel options look interesting.

2) Driver will get a heavier graphite. Maybe a whiteboard or blueboard 83? I might go back down in flex, finally. Or not...have to see if I need to get operated on again in off season.

3) Leather grips! I want to try leather grips on all my clubs. Best Grips look like a good option.

4) Putter. So, I'm never trading my #7, but I am interested in something to play around with in an 8802 style. Maybe throw a leather grip on that too to complete the vibe. What are the options on this? I've seen Odyssey #8, Napa, 8802, Studio Stock 6, Sophia, Bimini...anything else?

Thoughts?

Tipped X7s in everything... EVERYTHING. Also, no grips. It'll swing weight nice and heavy for you.

Mad,

So sorry to read about your current health struggles. Here's to a speedy and full recovery.

As to the equipment changes. I'm a small man with a meager swing speed so I won't comment on steel fairway shafts and X flex heavy driver shafts, but I own three sets of Best Grip leathers. I'd suggest ordering one grip before 'jumping in with both feet'. The grips are nearer a midsize and some dislike the near constant taper. I have small hands but really like the size, taper, feel and the 'rib' that's created with the stitchback.

I'll also add, I really like the appearance of blade putters but have never putted well with them. I'm currently carrying a Machine Megalodon (essentially a #7 design) and a whole host of mallets/mid mallets. I struggle with the toe hang, lack of weight and minimal alignment aid.

No grips, eh? If I have a long approach, maybe I could connect two shaft ends together like some kind of Voltron spear, right? Kind of like that Deadpool scene...in the Wolverine movie...but with golf balls...and no elevator farts...or dead bad guys.

edit: No...we'll keep the dead bad guys.

Hey, PD. Thanks for your kind words. It's probably just karma for me being a jackass, though. ;)

I wasn't thinking so much about super heavy DG shafts in my fairways or anything like that, but rather the Nippon steel fairway shafts. They weigh only a few grams more than the Tour 90's I have in my fairways now, and I've used 80 gram driver shafts before with no issues. I'm all about control these days...

Regarding the Best Grips specs - that actually peaks my interest, because I like a grip that is a little oversize, but I don't want to frig with the swing weight if I add extra layers or go with mid-size. I like something to throw my mitts on, and the more constant taper just sounds hook proof to me. If I do go with a sample, maybe start on my wedges, do you have a particular model preference? They seem to have a few options. Are they really as tacky as claimed?

Putters...yeah, they can be a pain. I used to putt with an old bullseye and then an 8802 back when I was starting. This whole health has me thinking about days gone by that were more fun, and I think I would like to be reminded of them more often. (I think that was the last original excuse available for ho'ing more gear...hopefully I didn't just break WRX).

Thanks,

MG

If you would, please never refer to the Deadpool in the Wolverine movie. Even Ryan Reynolds hated him.

Yeah, that one was just awful. Especially bringing back Sabretooth after already having introduced him differently in the first X-Men movie.

Mad,

I own both the Classic and Microperf grips. Both sets have extra ProTac (the additive that gives the grips their tackiness) and they are the tackiest grips I've ever put into play. The grips perform exceptionally well in my early morning humid rounds. I usually roll the grips in the morning dew to get them wet and then dry them off with my towel. They are tackier when moist. I'd say the Microperf is tackier than the Classic, but the differences are not dramatic. I started with grips on my wedges first and then jumped in with both hands. I usually install with two wraps of painter's tape, an air gun, and soapy water. I struggle to get them on with more than two wraps.

Dan, I hope you feel better soon! :-)

Thanks, buddy!

I've been in bed for about two weeks and finally went outside today, and suddenly it is Fall. I just completely shot a hole in the best part of the golf season up here. At least I can still ho clubs...

Oh, and update for WRX - Mp-54's on the way!

Mp-4's are going to our good friend DriverWedge, who is going to blend them with his Mp-64's.

Great setup man, the 650 was a super under rated driver.

It sure was. I'm kind of glad to be back with this head again. Not to say I won't try other things, but I hit some cannon shots with it this summer. Grafalloy Blue was part of that equation too.
