Amateurs with Staff Bags...Yes or No?(merged)

Recommended Posts

  • 5 weeks later...

At the range last saturday morning there were 2 guys immediately to my left, both had nice staff bags with their name on them. I actually thought they were pretty cool although I most likely would never have one myself. Its just entirely too much bag for me. IMO, a slightly scaled down version of a staff bag with a stand on it would be perfect. Something similar to the old Sun Mountain MPB but with the actual construction and material of a staff bag.

Use whatever bag you want.

I fell in love with the Vapor Blue staff bag when it was announced. Was shocked at how little I actually enjoyed it. At first, the ooh's and aah's were cool and it looked awesome. But it's just completely impractical out there. Clubs just bouncing everywhere, bulky, heavy, awkward all-around - already sold it.

Titleist and Taylormade both make really nice staff-stand bags.

I may have related this before. For many years, I schlepped around a huge brown leather staff bag on a trolley. Some 15 years ago, I went minimalist, not only in a bag, but with 5-7 clubs. I walk, use a Jones bag, or a Sun Mountain Sunday bag. I've never looked back.

A few years back, I took a raffle chance on a huge Callaway staff bag. I didn't want the bag, but I didn't want to appear cheap, so I bought a ticket for $5. Lo and behold, I won the bag. I gave the bag to a nephew, but guys asked me why I wasn't carrying the Callaway bag. This kept on for quite a while in good fun.

Use any bag you want.

Although I love the looks of staff bags, for me it was a tad impractical. I ended up w/ a staff bag stuffed full of windbreakers, rain suit, cigars, cigar cutters, 17 gloves, an umbrella, a rain cover, extra towels, a traveler of fireball whiskey, etc. and got to thinking....when on my routine weekly 9 or 18 holes am I ever going to use all of this? Not to mention it weighed 60 lbs.

So I just downsized to a "staff stand bag" by Taylormade, which is essentially a mini staff bag w/ two legs that kick out. It's still leather, has ample storage, and looks great.

Yeah I like those too.

I also end up carrying too much s*** in my bag.

I've actually thought about this only because I always enter those free bag giveaways, and always think to myself, if I actually win one, should I use it or is it just overkill for an amateur?

As much as everyone on here says "who cares!" Image is everything, we all think something whether positive or negative when we see something different on course, so what's your initial reaction? "That dude is trying too hard," or "That's a badass bag"

I just got a TM Staff Bag because I always ride in a cart. I am tired of my stand bag flopping around in the cart, turning sideways, and making it a pain to get clubs out. I don't care what people think, I care about convienience.

I have a mini staff bag (In my WITB post) which is the best of both worlds. Does the trick and not too bulky, but plenty of storage. Ideal size.

Only thing is no legs, but I'm fine with that. I typically only use that on the cart or displaying clubs.

Use my other Betti bag for push cart and/or carrying

If a guy's got flare, then a staff bag works no matter your skill level. Flare as in wingtip golf shoes, creased slacks, cigars, and a separate score card to keep track of all the presses. Or flare as in your own golf cart with tinted glass and spinner wheel covers. Dude, go get a staff bag! Otherwise, you'd better be getting paid to use one. LOL.

I have the Titleist S83 Staff bag with my name on it. Really heavy and hard to get in and out of the trunk of my IS350. Last time I drug it out and I was at the range it fell over due to the uneven ground at the grass and dented the earth. I really like the cool factor of it and all the storage but it just flat out blows on the practicality stand point.

I always wanted a staff bag, because they look cool and offer plenty of storage space. However, given my handicap I thought that it would look a bit strange to carry such a bag. But now it seems that more and more golfers in my area use staff bags, even those with a 54 handicap. And why shouldn't they? So, my next bag could very well be a staff bag.

Putting my Titleist midsize staffer back in play... kind of dumb since I don't play any titleist clubs anymore and don't carry enough stuff in the bag to make a bag that big worth it but I am so sick of the club tangle and little threads coming out on the ends of my grips from my 3.5 at this point. The staff bag makes club retrieving simple, I can't argue with that. I'll probably use it until I can pick up a staff stand or something similar.

I'd love a staff bag for the office just to display but probably wouldn't ever use one on course, then again I mostly walk. It does look like a little much when I see one on course but honestly,, the people who judge and make fun of someone for the kind of bag they have, those are the worst kind of people. They should look in the mirror and figure out why their life sucks so much that they have to get their jollies from putting down others.
