Boutique Putters Shops?

Just Some Basic Questions

I just got done reading all 3 pages of "The Cameron Cult", it was a different thread on here. I kept reading about these "Boutique Putter Shops". From what I understand is that, these shops can customize a putter to your specs, and what ever you basically want done(in reason I assume). I am not well educated on all these little putter shops. I have used Ping, Odyssey, and now a Rife 2 bar hybrid, all malet putters. But now I want to try a blade style putter. So basically I was wondering what are some good suggestion for a new putter. I want to go off the beaten path of the norm, Ping, Odyssey, etc.(major OEMs w/ there putter lines).

So basically looking for something new, something different, any and all suggestions welcomed.

I actually have never heard of them until just about 3 days ago. He was showing some new putters in a different thread. They were very nice, I am currently looking at some TP Mills putters.

 

Anymore suggestions would be great

 

EDIT: No I live in upstate NY by Canadian border, small hick town called Plattsburgh. I would have to order it on a whim, we have a Dicks sporting goods here, they have a very limited selection of OEM clubs. Just like everyone else in town if you want something and its not at Dicks you have to pretty much cross your fingers and order it and hope it works for you. Thats just how it is up here. Its depressing reading about outside launch monitors, and all the great things that go with living in a place w/ more than one golf shop.

 

Actually correction, we have one more store but they only have a ping fitting cart for irons. Everything else you order w/o a chance to demo. They don't even have a net to hit into.

WOW! When I looked at the C&L link above I have to say that, that is pretty much what I had in mind. I had a pic of what I wanted and the shape and everything was like what I just saw.

 

So whats the deal w/ the sound slot? I have a couple way old Ping putters w/ the sound slot, does it sound like that?

 

What are the benifits of the sound slots beside sound? Is there any?

Funny you ask, I played yesterday with a wrx member and he has a C&L without the soundslot and mine has it. Made a few putts on the practice green with each. Mine (with the soundslot) felt like it had a bit more feed back to me, I knew when I did not hit one dead center, maybe a tad softer too, not a huge difference though.

What lofts are you guys using?

 

How do you find out your lie angle? I have a rife 2bar w/ adjustable lie angles so it, is hard to find out what i have it set to.

 

What is the CL-1 floating face? On there website I have only seen the CL-1, and CL-2

The floating face is the same as the soundslot or you may also hear the term beached used as well.

 

you should be able to go to your local golf shop and get a quick fitting for your putter or use pings online fitting tool

When you are searching for the perfect first boutique putter pay very close attention to every angle, every distance, every profile view, every design element you can observe. There are lot's of anser style makers, but each has their own take. Some have better crafted edges, heels, toe slants, etc. Don't just take it all in with a quick look. Really study the pics between each maker and see where they change dimensions. It's all gestalt, but examine each part.

 

Some things to look for:

• topline thickness and beveled edges

• how do the cavity and topline interact

• heel radius. smooth, angled, ragged, choppy

• how does the heel transition into the sole and left bumper

• how the heel leads into the neck

• how the topline transitions into the neck

• how the shoulders transition into the bumpers and cavity

• how the barrel on the neck flows into the length of the neck

• how does the toe side fit the other angles

• what kind of sole: 3 plane or curved

• face milling style

• headcover, grip, shaft options?

etc. etc.

 

Really examine the heck out them. That's the fun of it all and take your time. Only you know what you like!
