First PGA Tournament Attended

1996 Nissan Open at Riviera... now called the Genesis Open and I've always referred to it as the LA Open

 

Craig Stadler won by 1 shot with a final score of 6-under par. That was the first course I walked in my life where I was taken aback at how hard it seemed (not the ground, the conditions). If you've ever been there for that tournament, you know it's a shot maker's course and there's no cutting corners. I was rooting for Fred Couples that day, but wasn't upset the Walrus won because I enjoyed him as well.

2008 Wachovia at Quail Hollow. Walked in on Tuesday of Practice Rd. Gate we entered was right next to the 3rd or 4th hole. 1st person I see is Vijay, waiting to tee off. We stop and watch. 1st I'm a little in awe that we are that close to the players. Then I will never forget watching him bring that Cleveland Hibore XL back and through impact. The moment I heard the sound the ball made coming off the club, and witnessed the ball flight, was the moment I realized while we both play "golf," and both bag the Hobore XL, the game he plays and the game I play are absolutely nothing alike.

2015 Presidents Cup. They were long days, but thoroughly enjoyed being there the last 3 days; it was nice to finally see a lot of these guys play in person, and the atmosphere on Sunday was incredible.

1996 Masters

2014 Barclays at Ridgewood. I used to work for MetLife and we had a company golf website with ticket/equipment/course discounts. My boss at the time told me I could request a few tickets, so I requested 4 to take a few buddies. I came in two days later to a FedEx package with 4 tickets for everyday of practice and tournament play. We went friday-sunday and it was an awesome first experience.

I am new to this form and just attended my first ever PGA tour event in Las Vegas at the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open. What was your first ever PGA tournament that you attended?

 

Attended the practice round of the 1988 Masters, but my first tournament rounds were at the

1992 PGA Championship, where Nick Price won at Bellrieve CC in St. Louis.

 

Had tickets to the American Express Champ that was cancelled due to 9/11.

It twas! I also went to the 1997 Masters.

1973 Quad Cities. Got to walk a practice round with Sam Snead. Hot, hot ,hot, humid , humid, humid. For a high and dry dweller, it felt like hell with grass.

 

Saw Snead at Westchester, in mid 1970s, his swing was like watching the wind blow.

'86 Atlanta Classic, which I had forgotten about. Georgia Pacific was the title sponsor before it became the Bellsouth maybe the following year. Mr Bob Tway won.

 

I do recall watching Larry Mize on the course and Greg Norman on the practice range.

First was the CVS Classic at Pleasant Valley in Mass. when I was in high school. Best was 2002 US Open at Bethpage

2003 PGA Championship great week saw lots of great shots just nobody could beat Shaun Micheel that week too bad.

My first was the SAS Championship in Cary NC. Champions Tour in 2010. Pretty cool to see Lee Trevino and Jim Thorpe and the other legends. First person I see when I walk through the gate is Fred Couples. Even the old dudes strike the ball better than me!

Mine was the 1998 CVS Classic at Pleasant Valley, MA , the last year won by Steve Pate. My favorite memory to this date was my buddy and I were along the 18th fairway, Fred Funk hits the ball about 8-10 feet infront of me into the light rough. There is really no one around except my buddy & I, as he approaches the ball I say to him "Freddy, I play from the rough all the time, you got this!!". He looks up at me and laughs, he proceeded to knock it stiff from like 180 out! Became a huge Fred Funk fan at that moment! Met him again at the 2001 Memorial when I lived out there, nice guy!

Ive never been to a PGA event, but I went to a Canadian Tour event when I was about 12-13 years old in Sault Ste Marie Ontario.

Biggest memory from it was being blown away how far the guys were able to drive the ball. Mind boggling!

With my father in the mid-sixties at Pleasant Valley in Sutton, MA. Don't remember what it was called then. Lee Elder gave me his glove walking off the course one year...still have it somewhere in the cellar.
