3 & 4 Hybrid with a 5 wood?

MileHighGuye

Recommended Posts

Looking at carrying at 3 and 4 hybrid and dropping my 4 iron.. Start a set with a 5-P.

I love my 5 Wood so that will be a mainstay... Is that too many clubs for a 5 Wood, 3 hybrid and 4 hybrid?

Anybody do it now ? Just looking for some advice.. My 5 wood is 18 degrees.. The 3 hybrid is 20 with a 4 hybrid being 23.

Looking at the Apex hybrid if it matters.

No need for 3H with a 5w, IMO. I have trouble with driver, so next yr.'s set up will be 3w, 4h, 5-pw, 56*, putter. Pretty much all I need. ;)

I play an 18° 5w and then jump to a 23° hybrid ... works fine for me as I don't need as tight of gaps at that end of the bag.

I do the same. But my 5 wood is at 19 and hybrid is 22.

As long as the distance gaps work for you, the club/number on the bottom shouldn't matter.

I've played setups with a 15*3w, 17* hybrid, 20* hybrid and there was about 10 yards between each club.

I don't see why 18*5W, 20* and 23* hybrids wouldn't be similar.

Definitely go hit them all on the same launch monitor to verify that the distance gapping works. Loft alone doesn't determine distance; head, shaft length, shaft flex, etc all play a part as well.

I also think you don't need both a 3 and 4 hybrid if you're keeping the 5 wood. I usually play a 5 wood at 18* and a 22* or 23* hybrid and haven't felt the lack of an intermediate club. That said, I usually play courses which are 6200 - 6600 yards; I guess if you're playing much longer courses you might want to top-load your bag and carry both - in which case going for adjustable models rather than fixed models such as the Apex (though that is a great club) might be the way to go to get the best gapping.

A hybrid is generally a club longer than the corresponding iron. I'd add a 4H and 5H, to go along with the 5-P. A 3H is likely as long as a 5W.

I hit my 5w about 10-15 yds longer than my 3h, which I think is attributable to the longer shaft and 1 degree stronger loft in the 5w. That said, I usually carry one or the other as the distances are too similar to justify both clubs in the bag.

Have you thought about a 4w instead? That might be better for your gapping

As others have mentioned, I too would skip the 3H and just go 5wd, 4H, 5-PW. I played that setup just yesterday and had no issues and my 5 wood too is 18 degrees but my 4H is 22 degrees but even at 23 degrees it probably wont make any difference.

There will likely be a large gap between the 4H and 5i. By choking down on the 4H, it can serve as a 4i, and bridge the gap.

Since I set my G driver to 11.5 degrees and 5 wood to 16.5 degrees, I carry the G 3 hybrid (19 degrees) and G 4 iron (21 degrees). I should probably carry a 4 hybrid but I don't really hit woods consistently and do like the 4 iron off the tee.

I generally play this setup:

5 wood adjustable to 17 degrees good for 225-235 yards (Sometimes I'll use a 4 wood here depending on the set & club availability)

3 hybrid adjusted to 20 degrees good for about 210-220 yards (Again I'll sometimes switch to 7 wood depending on the set & club availability)

4 hybrid adjusted to 23 degrees good for about 195-205 yards

My "3 hybrid" actually says "4h" on it but it's 21°. It fills a nice gap between the 4 hybrid and the 5 wood - roughly 220 on a mid flight. Depending on the course, I'll drop the 3h or only go with 3 wedges in a p/52/58 setup.

I'd say no, but it depends on your gaps, which are based on the club and how you swing.

Ex: I have a 3w, 5w and a 3h. I hit the 3w off the deck around 240, the 5w around 220 and the 3h around 200. the 3h is 19*, and the 5w is 18*. Even though it's only 1 degree less, the 5w goes much further because of the longer shaft (and because the 3h isn't as "hot" as others). I then play 5-pw.

I have a 3w (14°), 2h (17°) that is very similar to a 5w, a 3h (20°), a 4i/h (24°) hollow iron, and then on to a 5i (28°).

For my game and the courses I play, that appears to be the optimal bag setup. For now, at least. This is GolfWRX after all!

It really is a very individual thing, but here's the "main" points:

Do you commonly face long shots during your rounds of golf? If you do, either because you are a long hitter and go for lots of par 5's while also playing par 3's from 200yds+, or because you are a short hitter who often has long irons/hybrids into par 3's and par 4's, then it makes sense to skew your bag makeup towards the top end. The same can be said if the long shots you normally face, even if they aren't numerous, carry with them very large penalties, if not executed correctly? This sounds like it would cover the vast majority of golfers (and probably does, unfortunately) but it shouldn't, if more golfers would play the correct tees.

Do you rarely face long shots during your round of golf? If you are playing the "correct" set of tees, you face approximately 9-11 shots each round with your wedges and short irons, 3-4 with your mid irons, and only a couple each round with your long clubs. If so, don't worry too much about the gapping on the long end of the bag. Get a bunch of wedges that you like and go make a bunch of birdies. Golf is about having fun and, last I checked, making birdies is fun!

So, like I said, all of this is very individual and requires a good bit of honesty with yourself. Either way, good luck!

I go:

3w

5w

7w (which is the equivalent of a 3h)

4h

5h

The gaps work for me.

My gap issue is between 5h and 6iron. It is manageable though.

I used to play a 5w and 3h and it was a nice gap (I've since replaced the 5w with a 17deg 2h). But a lot depends on what you mean by 5w and 3h. My 5w was 18 deg and 3h is 21 deg. But you could also have a 19deg 5w and 19deg 3h which likely would be too close of a gap. There's quite a bit of range of lofts on 5w and 3h. 5w could be 17-19. And 3h 18-22. Plus differences in how hot the clubs are or shafts you use. So a lot is going to depend on the actual clubs you use. That said, if both clubs were the same model a 3deg gap between 5w and 3h is probably about right

I don't see the need to carry that many clubs to accommodate the 200+ yd shots. You just don't encounter that many shots during an average round to justify having 3 clubs to manage the 30yd gap for most.

  • 2 years later...

3 wood- 250. Pretty much only used for 2nd shots on par 5's.

5 wood -230. Used off the tee for accuracy and also for approach shots.

4 hybrid- 217

5 iron- 205

IMO the clubs in this part of the bag are all about yardage gaping and what fits your eye/style. I've always liked fairway woods over hybrids but decided to give a hybrid a prolonged chance to stay in the bag this year. Some love hybrids and dislike FW's so they'd obviously swap the 5 wood with another hybrid. Again, it's all about filling those gaps.

The OP doesn't mention the yardages and what gaps they are looking to address.

I personally carry a 3w, 5w and a 4 iron. I picked up a new to me U85 23* last night and plan on testing out if I want to drop the 4 iron in favor of it. Like a previous poster said, you'll have to consider how often and the intent of those 200+ yard shots. Are you looking to close the distance on a par 5, long approaches to the green, off the tee? I don't think there's a great need to dial the in gaps so much at the top of the bag if you're intent is to use it off the tee or to close the distance on an approach.

19* 5 wood and either a 21* DI or a 21* hybrid.

However, there is more distance variance with the 5 wood, which Jack Pearsall likes.

It all depends on how **bg's** yardage gaps play out. In my case, the distance overlap is 7W and 3H. (3H goes in bag in fall and spring when winds are higher and rough is thinner).

Another factor is whether you have traditional hybrids - with shaft lengths between FW and numbered irons - or iron-replacement hybrids, which have pretty much same loft and shaft length as numbered irons in a set.

I was having the same dilemma...decided on the Ping G410 3Hy , with the loft adjusted to 18 deg. My set is - DR, 3W(14.5), 3Hy(18),4Hy(22), 5-PW. This way, I figure the gaping and the distance will allow me to eliminate the 5W, and then I was able to add an extra wedge. I have the Ping Glide 2.0 Black 50-54 & 58 that completes my set.
