Modus 105 vs Modus 120. Differences other than weight?

Recommended Posts

I need some opinions here. I tested the Z765s with the Modus 120 in stiff which was the only demo available. This combo felt as good as anything I've hit in 25 years. However, I ordered my 765 set with Modus 105s stiff as my aging swing dictates a lighter shaft. I would like to know if I can expect the same feel and trajectory from the 105 vs the 120? I am also concerned I should have ordered a regular flex instead of stiff as my 7 iron carry distance is 150-155. And I have until tomorrow to change my order. Any insight from fellow WRXrs would be most helpful.

The 120 has an odd profile in that the butt is very soft and the tip very stiff. The 105 is more medium in it's bend profile. Mind you, only guys that put a lot of loading force into the shaft will see flight variation due to different shafts so it's hard to say if you would. At your 7-iron carry distance it seems you are right in between R and S. Which way to go depends on feel. If you still have time I'd go swing some more demos before deciding.

I'm in a similar boat. When I got my 745s, I got my 950s soft-stepped (at no charge from Srixon). Have been pretty good. I like the Modus 120s, too, and been thinking about the same thing. Our local dealer didn't have the updated heads on their cart last time so couldn't test the 105s.

I would like to try other shafts but I can find no place to demo here. Either way, I've already placed my order and have until tomorrow morning to modify it. My gut tells me to stick with the stiff. I also have tried soft stepping in the past but prefer to swing it as the shaft company has intended. The 120 felt great,,almost like graphite. I just hope the 105 will feel the same and possibly give me just a little bit higher launch,,just a little?

I used the Modus 105 in a set of Mizuno JPX 900 Forged. The clubs didn't react well for me with that shaft. As a long time user of Modus 120 s I re shafted with them . The difference was night and day. Higher ball flight and longer carry and less jarring feel on impact. Good luck in the search

Check out Titleist website in the custom section. There are descriptions and spin/launch charts of all the shafts they offer. Might help?

I have irons with both sets - 120s and 105s. The 105 has a much stouter feel, without the the "whip" at impact you get with the 120's. I also found launch with the 105 to be a little lower. Spin seems similar with both.

I prefer the 120's, just because the kicking feel it has makes me smile.

I have both shafts as well. I completely agree with this EXCEPT I prefer the 105 shafts so far. They feel more stable because they are a little stouter.

The funny thing is, if you just compare them in theory (by the numbers, which have been provided by Tom Wishon in numerous threads), the Modus3 120S has almost exactly the same frequency profile as the DG R300. The same is true for the 105S, except that the tip is a lot softer, more similar to the 950GH S.

I haven't tried either, so I have to take the personal experiences of others. But the Modus3 120S intrigues me for exactly that reason. A shaft that has a profile very close to the DG R300, but at 114gr, as opposed to 127gr.

I see a gap. There definitely is a gap.

I've never hit anything from Nippon other than the 105x. All I can say is I liked the 105x on the range with a 6 iron demo!

I just ordered some mp5's with the 105x hard stepped once. this will be the first time I listened to the shaft optimizer. I hit a bunch of balls with the 105x (not hard stepped) and liked the feel and how it performed. I've had the px6.0 in my irons for the last 8 years. (mp57 and mp59). when I replaced the 57s with the 59s the optimizer suggested the x100. I went back for a second fitting and hit shafts on the trackman. ended up staying with the px6.0 which the pro thought was a better fit for me regardless of what the optimizer said.

hopefully I don't hate the switch. if so, I have a few px6.0's I can pull if needed!

UPDATE! Srixon does not offer the Modus 120 in a regular flex. I think this is just plain stupid but it was confirmed by my retailer and my call to Srixon customer service. So, I got the 120 stiff ss once. Come on Srixon! Why would you offer a shaft and not give the customer their choice of a standard flex?

Nope, no reg flex in 120....I ordered a set of 745 from them and got em in 120 stiff.....to me the modus 120 and kbs tour are very similar....I didn't like kbs tour and really didn't care for modus 120....shafts are so personal it's very hard to guess or to go off anyone's experience....people are different in swings and the way they perceive information.....even with same swingspeed everything can and usually will be different with shafts......

When demoing shafts as long as the head kinda resembles the one your getting it doesn't really matter which one it is........to me shafts fit the golfer not the head....I play pretty much same shafts regardless of head

If you were to guess get the correct weight first.....weight is most important

Mid sections are quite different between the 105s and 120s. Think of the 120 as a 1050 with a stiff tip

Mid sections are basically identical. Tip is different.

I had the same experience. I carry my 7 Iron similar distance 155-160 and the 120 Stiff is the best shaft I have played. The head- Shaft combination is important so I think you will like the Z765 with the Modus Tour 120 S

I plan on testing the 105 and 120 lines in the near future. Does anyone match similar shaft profiles of their irons and driver? I know there any many different aspects of this (weight, swing, tempo, release, etc.). I am thinking that the 105 would be similar to the Matrix Red Tie (mid launch/spin). Anyone else have similar thoughts or observations?
