Congrats to you and your family! I'm not all that far from Elon, and will be looking forward to following her.

How did ya'll like Sailfish Point?

I played there quite a bit BITD, and always enjoyed the experience...hope that you did as well.

Sailfish Point was awesome. My folks have lived on Hutchinson Island since '94 and I've always wanted to play there...this was my first time. They have some friends who live out there but they're not members of the club.

It certainly was cool to be there with Haley. The course was in perfect condition and the weather was great. It's a shame there are not more ocean and inlet views, but it's still spectacular. Some of the homes are ridiculous...millions upon millions and some over 25,000 sf. I'm a 2 hc and played like crap...did not break 80. Haley shot 75 from the same tees. It's rare she beats me from the same tees but I suppose it's going to happen more frequently as she improves and I age...lol!

Your daughter has a fantastic swing - most likely a bright future in golf!!

Thanks...we're sure proud of her! In spite of not being what I call a "junior golf robot," (she played multiple sports up until this year), she's had some nice golfing accomplishments and has played in 2 USGA national championships, the US Girl's Junior and the US Women's Am. It will be interesting to see how she progresses when she's going at it full-bore in college next year.

BTW, her swing coach is Geoff Jones, a.k.a. Slicefixer here on GolfWRX.

Whoa...you're now going to get 100 messages about when his book is coming out.

Um...when is his book coming out?

Hahaha! I know many here had fun with this and had been skeptical as to its existence, but I actually read Geoff's manuscript and enjoyed it. Somewhere along the way he had a change of heart and decided not to publish.

We only get to see Geoff about 4 times per year when he comes to Warwick, NY. He's been very good to Haley and to me.

Big congrats to your daughter and her hard work as a golfer and fundraiser, sounds like Haley gets "it"

I really feel your pride as a father of two teenage girls myself, 18.5 and almost 17

Now for the usual wrx nonsense:

- your daughter and Rickie make a nice couple

- your matching outfits are cute

- course looks amazing

- both swings are so solid

Thanks Cardoustie! I have 2 girls also. My older one is a junior in college but never took to golf. No boys, so I made both play all kinds of sports!

-Haley agrees with you that she and Rickie make a nice couple.

- I had not even noticed our matching outfits til you pointed it out, nicely played!

- The course IS amazing

- Yes, their swings certainly are solid and I'm envious ;)

One of my friends in the bidness was the super there for a number of years, and he always kept the course in immaculate condition. Good to know that it's still that way.

If you ever get the chance to play it, Rio Mar CC in Vero Beach. It's a private club, with about as many holes playing on, teeing from or hitting into the ocean as any course I've ever seen, including Seminole. Very difficult to play it (members truly love their exclusivity) and not that difficult a course, but really enjoyable. Good old Florida seaside course.

Holler at me if'n ya'll ever get SE NC way....some pretty nice tracks here, and would love to meet you and your family!

OP,

When did Haley start golf and was she a natural right away?

Also curious what other sports she used to play. thanks!

Both of my girls played soccer, baseball/softball, and basketball starting young. They were also exposed to golf occasionally since I played and belonged to a club. Haley got really into lacrosse starting at age 10 or 11 and was very good at it mostly because she could run fast and score. My older daughter got into rowing crew which was a great experience for her.

At around age 8 we noticed that Haley had a knack for golf. Her arms didn't go soft and collapse at the top like many youngsters and she seemed to have more speed/power than most, but she only came to the range occasionally.

When she was 10 she played her first 9 hole tournament and shot 53 from the forward tees with no caddy. The following year at age 11 was when we really got going with US Kids local and then regionals. She was not groomed to play only golf from a young age like is so commonplace in the post-Tiger era.

Haley did not play high school golf because she played lacrosse which is in the same season here in NJ. She also ran sprints on the winter track team. On the national level there are a lot of girls who are better players than her, but I think she has more upside than most because she hasn't been at it full time like most of the top junior players. We'll see...

I would say she was somewhat of a natural because of general athleticism, but also because she has always been very "coachable." When she was 13 we started with Slicefixer. Before that I was teaching her the basics as best I could, learning a lot from the instructional forums here.

There's no perfect recipe as each kid is different and will respond differently to coaching, encouragement, motivation, etc. You also cannot expect perfect linear progression. There are lots of ups and downs, highs/lows, and varying degrees of interest and motivation along the way.

Elon is big on study abroad/experiential learning. The golf teams play year round so the kids can't pull an entire semester abroad, so the school sends the teams on extended travel every 3Rd year.

Next November the entire team is going to Scotland where they'll play St. Andrews and others, experience the culture, and write a paper for credit after they return. All paid for by the University.

That's awesome OP! Your daughter has a very nice swing. I'm also in the central NJ area...What coaches has she gone to? I'm looking for a new set of eyes next season.

Her swing coach is Geoff Jones (Slicefixer on GolfWRX). He's in Texarkana, but comes to Warwick, NY (about 2 hours away) 4 or 5 times per year to teach his East coast students. If you search GolfWRX instructional forums for "Slicefixer 9-3" you'll find a massive thread. Geoff's been great for Haley. I could connect you if you're interested.

So does he run kind of like a weekend golf school? How are his rates?

Thanks for the info though, I will check the thread out. As for Haley, what's her aspirations in golf? Is she just kind of playing for fun, or has dreams of LPGA? Would be so cool to see a fellow members kid on tour.

Geoff's rates are very reasonable. He teaches hourly but often has first time students go through a 1 or 2 day "ground school" as a full immersion if you buy into his overall teaching concepts. If you'd like more info feel free to PM me anytime.

Like most normal teens, Haley's aspirations and level of motivation tend to change regularly...lol, so tough to know for certain how far she intends to pursue golf. In my view it's a marathon, not a sprint. I've seen too many "junior golf robots" burn out...some before they even get to college. My GolfWRX buddy Heavy_Hitter (golfing daughter from FL same age) can attest.

Haley's a social kid yet sadly, except for tournaments, golf has been kind of solitary for her since she has no other girls in our area to play with regularly. I think she's going to thrive in the college team environment. Hopefully we've given her a nice foundation, plus she's got good power which is often a limiting factor.

I just want her to have the best overall collegiate experience possible and however far she decides to pursue golf is fine with me either way.

I stayed in St. Andrew's for 10 days in 2012 when the Ryder Cup was on at Medinah. The golf in and around town is spectacular ..... and town itself is one of the most beautiful and vibrant little spots I have ever visited. She's going to love it. It is immersed in culture and the town has a young vibe to it due to the university

Make sure she gets to Kingsbarns, Carnoustie and Muirfield if she can. Tell her to work on hitting wedges off your driveway in prep, turf is tight and HARD . .which is why you see so much off green putting on links tracks

So my 17 year old daughter Haley participated in the AJGA's Leadership Links program over the past year. The idea is to get junior golfers involved in philanthropy and giving back through the game. Haley was one of the top fund raisers in the country and set an all-time record for the most pledges through Leadership Links. In total between her 2016 birdie pledges and a charity golf event she chaired last October, she has raised over $52,000 (net) for her chosen charity, The First Tee of Greater Trenton (NJ).

As a reward for her accomplishments, Haley earned the opportunity to meet Jack & Barbara Nicklaus and to play golf with Rickie Fowler at the Bear's Club in Jupiter, FL. She had an awesome day and there are not enough superlatives to describe Rickie, Jack, Barbara, and all of the folks at the AJGA and The Bear's Club who made this possible. Last week was a huge week for her as she also signed her NCAA National Letter of Intent to attend and play for Elon University on a full athletic scholarship starting next year! While down there we also went paddle boarding in Jupiter inlet and got to play Sailfish Point, an exclusive Nicklaus design on Hutchinson Island. The entire week was absolutely spectacular!

I had my clubs in the trunk in case there was a no-show, but in the end was happy to be an inside-the-ropes spectator. Rickie really smokes it, and his short game is just sick. We got to spend quite a bit of time with Rickie and with Jack and I enjoyed speaking with them. They all played great and I expect Haley will remain on cloud nine for quite a while!. Hope you all enjoy the pics and I'll upload a few more plus a couple videos too at some point:

Thanks for the post MWK!

Elon's home course is Alamance CC. I believe it's a Donald Ross. They also have access to 3 or 4 others. Does Stoney Creek sound familiar? I think that's one...
