Apple Watch as GPS?

Agree. I don't blame them but that also is not a model I am interested in as a consumer

I have a garman fenix 3 and it does golf and a whole lot of other sport related activities.Ive had it for a year and couldn't be without it now and I did pick it up when it went on sale which did not last long.

I might add the GPS is built into the watch.

How do you like Fenix 3 for golf?

Do you like the screen or is it to faded?

Anybody found a better app for Apple Watch yet?

Has anyone tried the Ping app for the GPS? The app itself is free but not the GPS or workouts. The initial reviews for the GPS functionality on the appstore weren't that great - so one probably has to wait a bit to become usable.

Apperently the app drains the battery when you use it without phone (but it is the only GPS app that you can actually use without an iPhone connected)

Anybody found a better app for Apple Watch yet?

I've been using FunGolf and like it a lot. It's not free but is the best watch GPS and even rivals the standalone devices. It uses the watch GPS when not in range of the iPhone or load the course beforehand and leave you phone at home. The watch gives you a visual of the hole being played with the center of the green. Move, via the crown or finger around the hole to determine distances to hazards, front, back etc. Using the program on the phone itself gives the best visuals I've ever seen. Will keep your score or set it to auto move from hole to hole. Check it out: http://www.fungolf.com/

Thanks for the tip. I had a look at the website but it looks like the app on the apple watch only gives you the distance to the centre. If you want anything else you need to move the cursor. Is that right or is there an option to show near/far distances as well?

Update: Found it in the User Guide, it does show front/back as well. Just wasn't shown on the screenshots.

So do we have a new potential leader?

For the most part I won't get a chance to demo any of these apps until spring

Yes I would say we have a new front runner. I played around with fun golf and I really liked it. The graphics are good on the watch and you get nice 'distance rings' every 10 yard with that you can see from where you are approaching the green and how far different parts of the green are.

It had a auto hole advance and if you want you can easily enter your score.

The only thing I missed was the front /back distances. They removed them in the last update. I've emailed them that IMHO front /back is more important than to see the par of the hole.

I've forgot my Skycaddie at home so can't say much to the accuracy but the few times I've shot a pin with my laser the distance was spot on.

Quite pleased so far. I just hope they bring the front /back display back.

The watch crashed on my once but the app started straight back to the correct hole.

Downloaded FunGolf and proceeded to go to the course. Tried to use it then found I couldn't download the course. The heck? Well reading the fine print, the app is free, but you have to pay to use it. Thought maybe I downloaded the wrong app, so I came back here. Nope correct app.

So if you didn't read the posts above closely, FunGolf is not free.

It seems that is the way most apps are going. Free to download but when you actually want to use it you have to pay for it. But then they put a lot of work into it and they are not running a charity ;-)

What I like about the Fun Golf app are the graphics and the distance rings:

The picture shows a hole at my club. It has two tiers with a massive slope between the two (the hole is on the side of a hill). You want to be on the right tier otherwise it has 3-putt written all over it. With a normal GPS watch you get front/centre/back distance but you don't know where these points are. e.g. the front of the top tier (on the right) is 15 yards from the centre, however the front part of the lower tier is around where the centre point is (and you wouldn't want to miss short on the lower tier as the bunkers are about 2m below the putting green).

Btw the graphics on the phone are very nice as well. You get a 3D, 2D, Satellite and Distance view.
