I got fitted for the SZ, and I hit it great, but I know I will get a standard head by summer just to goof around with. Lots of ideas rolling around in my head

I'm in the air right now headed to San Diego, so I'm hopeful that I can find a shop around there that has the "driver that shall be named" to try. I'm not holding my breath, but hopeful.

 

2017 will be the year of Callaway for me. I've already ordered the Apex hybrid, Pro 16 irons, MD3 wedges, and 2017 Hyperlite 5 bag in the black/white/green colors. (I'm tired of looking around for my bag when EVERYONE has a black bag.) I already have a Toulon that I love and only need to top it off with a driver and fairway. I'm even switching to the Chrome Soft after being a die hard Pro V1 guy for years.

 

Now, if they would just hurry up and release this pesky driver, I could have my bag set for silly season!!! :)

 

Oh, and this thread didn't help, or...uh...it did. Depends on how you look at it! ;)

The standard has the chevron site aide on the crown? Is the SZ crown naked?

 

Nope, both are the same unfortunately.

 

Gross...I can't stand site aides on my clubs.

 

I don't usually like a busy crown of any kind (sight lines, different colors, raised speed steps, etc.) but there is something about these heads that I love. They just look sleek and powerful at address.

 

Before I went on the trip I read a lot about these heads in another thread; many people had seen them and were relating what they'd seen. I must say I was concerned with all the talk of carbon fiber, green highlights, speed steps, etc., but all that went away after I saw it in person and hit it.

The SZ is not considered as a "players" club. It's just for the guys which need less spin.

Both heads will be for the masses. Maybe the SZ a smidge more to the players, but defenitely not singles and better only.

 

The crowns don't look as busy as one would think. Both look very, very nice.

 

Already made an appointment for a fitting in January.

 

By the way. STAR will be a high-end / high-price boutique driver. Targeting at those the PXG guys.

The stock Rogue Max has silver accents and Max lettering while the 917 Titleist Rogue Max has red ones. So is either one "made for"...?

SZ with weight back vs LTD Pro will be very interesting to see the numbers on. They must be quite similar CG wise. Only thing is you can get LTD's for like $150 right now, steal

 

I haven't hit the LTD but I have heard nothing but good things about it. I was on the verge of purchasing one when I got tapped for this trip.

 

I would love to see a head-to-head from someone in the coming months who owns both.

Chances of me getting an Epic, let alone a Sub Zero are probably pretty slim to be honest. The only thing I'm looking to replace this year is the 3 wood (I love it, just want something else to look at) and wedges. Driver probably not in the cards for me. But, I'm sure I could at least go somewhere and test the thing out, to get some semblance of a comparison. You'll of course have to wait until the March/April time frame so I can hit it outside :(

 

Never get rid of a 3 wood you love!

 

I've learned that lesson once before, believe me. I won't be getting rid of it, or disassembling it, just getting something new to try out. This 3 wood will remain with the likes of my L4V driver, never leaving my possession.

Did he also tell you what the differences were between these two and the STAR besides it being a bonded hosel?

He just mentioned that they don't fear PXG (or whatsoever), however it's a light jab against them.

So I talked to Mr. Toulon for about 30 minutes after Torrey Pines and we discussed how the Garage and Custom Shop were going to coexist. I'm not suppose to go into any detail but I can tell you for certain that it's going to be a lot of fun.

I forgot to add, when I was touring the Tour build department, there was an incredibly odd 5i laying around.

 

It had a mountain of lead tape on the head, baseball bat size grips, short playing length, and most upright lie I'd ever seen. Built for the mad golfing scientist, Bryson Dechambeau.
