Average 150 Club?

Recommended Posts

I have a couple that go 150:

Thinned wedge

Fatted 3i

Chucked driver (thrown in anger)

...or the much rarer, well-struck 8 iron.

Take your pick. :drag:

Next time I play I will take some pictures of the craters I leave in the greens, lol. Yes, your correct sometimes they barely hop out. I dont use prov1x anymore due to excessive spin. NXT Tour and E6 dont spin as much, lol!

Here is a picture from Sunday, 146yd par 3 pin high. I hit a Callaway Supersoft just for you!

I don't see a picture but the SuperSoft would explain a lot. Zero spin where wedges and short irons fly forever with no spin. If it stopped anywhere near its pitch mark then the greens must have been super saturated.

not a long iron hitter but i can get it there with my 714 AP2 7i smooth tempo. With a faster tempo i can get it there with an 8i also so depends on wind conditions.

9 iron.. However...

Something to consider...

If the pin is 150-160 on the front I would hit full 9 to big 9... If pin is 150-160 in the back right I may hit an easier lower cut with an 8 and let the ball release back there...

General rule when in between clubs front pin less club harder and higher... Back pin more club, easier and lower...

Also pin distance is only part of it, pay attention to features on the green, and even wind conditions, You'll find there are a lot of elements you can use as a backboard to give yourself more margin for error. The pga pro's do this really well, they use conditions to their advantage.... If you see a pro hit the ball 350 chances are they hoisted the drive up in the air to utilize some helping breeze... You see a guy suck the ball back 15 feet, most likely there was an up slope past the hole he used as a backboard.

It's like watching a magician, once you learn how it's done there is no magic or amazement anymore, but you do appreciate good work when you see it.

In true golfwrx fashion... I'd pull my titleist bullseye putter... 3 degrees of loft... choke down on it.... hit a cut with just enough juice to bring it back 9 feet to spot it 150 yards.

No way to resist this.... If you read all the responses, the most popular response is "9 Iron". The swing speed required to hit a 9 iron 148 yards (per GolfWrx) is 112 mph, which is, ahhhhh, FASTER than the average SS on the PGA Tour... Just sayin....

Ss isn't the only thing in play here, there are many people who greatly deloft the club at impact. I'm an average hitter but my brother puts his gap wedge the same distance as my 8i. He does swing faster, but not that much.

Yeah..... but I also have to say isnt this the "average joe" section? Not the "Not, so average joe section"

I will say this I posted in this thread about my 8iron and I am the longest out of the group that I play, there is 8 of us.......I would say the shortest guy uses a 5hybrid for 150, Another would use a ping eye2 5iron, another uses a 7iron M2 and another would be using a 6iron speedblade....

so "defloft" still needs to have X amount of swing speed/ballspeed to effectively have the ball travel X distance, you monster hitting 150 with 9 irons are not your average joe length.....

CarryDistanceSwingSpeedChart-600x218.jpg

9iron - 148 yards, is PGA tour Driver 113mph

8iron 143 yards, is Driver 100mph

Average Joe, @ 95mph driver swing speed, would need between 5 or 6iron..... so if you can deloft a PW from 47.1* down to 30.5* with a swing speed of 90driver thats a lot of loft 17* to deloft...

I think people are forgetting this is the "average" joe section......

Agree, loft differences among also make the comparison hard. I'm pretty much right on the 100 mph and typically pull out a 33 degree 7 iron out at 150 allowing that if i hit it a tad fat, i'll be okay. Flush it'll got slight longer.

An 8 iron I'd better flush at 37 degrees.

If I grab my buddies aeroburners, an 8 iron (33.5) gives me the same results and stepping a 9 iron in that set may get there but will probably be short.

Lofts are key when making the comparison.

I guess people see "Average 150 club" Yet they dont realize that its in the average joe section?

I guess, this is average "Joe" in WRX standards.....9irons going 150 yards.........soft 9irons.... 9irons traditional lofts.....LOL.......

i was gonna say...doesn't sound so average to me. i may have a slightly below avg driver swing speed around 90...150 is a stepped on 6i or a regular 5i for me. if hitting towards the pin, i'd probably opt for a medium-hard 6i to let it run...still a beginner, so sometimes i might not modulate correctly and send that 5i way deep.

I based the average joe distance off the 15-20 people I have played with the last couple years. By far and away the average player is within 1 club of me, I hit a hard 8, soft 7 for 150 depending on must fly or roll out.

I think the shorter players on here (nothing wrong with hitting shorter, just a fact) forget that an average is made up of a combination of long players and short players. If you are hitting a 5i (especially with the new lofts), you are contributing to the short end of the average, just like my brother hitting a wedge contributes to the long end.

Also, too many people equate swing speed to distance, there are a ton of average people who swing fast, but make crappy contact, ss means nothing if you aren't hitting the face consistently.

average joe average does not mean average out of everybody from tour players to first timers. average joe average means eliminate the really good players, and take the average of the rest. it seems to me like a lot of folks replying here are not average joes (they probably just don't realize what section the post is in) and they post up their 150 club.

that said, as a crummy golfer (average joe) i carry a 7 iron 140 for a total distance about 150, unless i really step on it.

Sorry if I wasn't clear, I didn't bring tour players into the way I view average, I based it off the many playing partners of various levels I've had.

I highly.....doubt the "Average" golfer has a swing speed better than a LPGA tour players.....and that is talking the billion people playing golf,..... average joe, I play about 10-15 scramble tournaments a year...so I see an "average" amount of people and MANY of them dont hit anything less than a 6iron 150 yards..........

people hitting 9irons 150 would equate again to a driver swing speed of 110.... with that that also means a good consistent strike..... yeah......average joe? no........

Being an average Joe thread I giggled my way through most of these posts. I play mostly with average joes. Rarely are any longer than me (some are very similar). It's a 7 all day long in perfect conditions. I have played with not so average joes and yes they are hitting more lofted clubs. They are very low caps and NOT average joes
