Bags with 4-way or 14-way dividers?

Recommended Posts

Amazed at the popularity of SM and Ogio bags. I hear SM makes a lot (if not most) of the bags for other OEMs. Regardless, and I know it's silly, but I always preferred bags branded by Ping, or Titleist, or Callaway, etc. Just an OCD thing for me, I guess.

For years Sun Mountain has made Titleist golf bags.

Yep, thanks for confirming.

Made me think of another question: " Does anyone else prefer to have the logo on their bag to match at least one of items in it?" Driver, woods, hybrids, irons, wedges, putter, ball, towel, tees, divot tool, you name it!

Come to think of it, I like it best when the bag matches the driver.

I have a Sun Mountain C-130 for riding and a Four 5 for walking. Both 14 way. I like that every club has a slot and I know right away if I have misplaced my club/left a wedge on the green.

+1

The answer to better golf is hit it better, farther, and make more putts.

I like 14-way and use it in my cart bag, but I really prefer the Ogio Wood-E system for smaller stand bags... Everything seems to fall where it's supposed to just as well as a 14-way, but in a 7" top. I'd even prefer it in a cart bag since I use mine on a push cart 50% of the time. Getting the necessary amount of tilt to get things sitting right on a riding cart would be harder, but I'm sure some slanted ridges could be worked into the inside of the base.

I have a 14 way C130 that I just went back to and I HATE it... its not the dividers, its the putter well that sits behind the pocket that I keep my golf balls and other stuff in.... and the putter gets hung up... its weird...

The 4-way top is the best for a stand bag. Simple, organized, and not cluttered. It makes it lighter with not so many dividers and clubs go into the bag pretty easy without getting stuck. It works well.

Lower section: 52, 56, 60, PW

Left middle section: 7, 8, 9

Right middle section: 4, 5, 6

Top section: Driver, 3W, 3H, putter, alignment stick.

Used to do this too, minus the alignment stick. Even without it, I felt the top section was too busy. Might be nice to have 4.5-way (4-way with then a separate putter section). What an idea! You heard it here first! Tried a clip-on putter holster, but found it unreliable.

My circa ~2000 Callaway/Ogio stand bag that I use for my short/walking set is 4 way plus a single slot on top for either putter or driver (I use it for putter)... only 17 years too late!

I've had both 14 way and currently 4 way. I prefer the 4 way so much better. Initially I thought the 14 way would keeps the clubs apart and organize better but in reality, the clubs get hung up more than my 4 way (two 5 bag). I had the four 5 prior. With my two 5, I'm able to place more than 14 clubs if need be, alignment aids, shafts, extra whatever for practice walking rounds or going to range for testing things.

I guess it all comes down to your preference. I think lately due to walking often, the 4 way was easier to manage and grab and carry. If I used my push cart or motor cart often or for all my rounds, I'd consider using a 14 way since the weight would be heavier too.

There's a myth that 14-way tops are heavier than 4-way tops. It's simply not the case as there are a multitude of 14-way tops that are the same weight as their 4-way counterparts. Adding some nylon dividers and plastic up top adds so little weight that its barely discernible. Plenty of offerings from Sun Mountain, PING, and Callaway that offer a 14-way top in the 4.5 lb range. A half pound to a pound extra strapped to your back spread across both shoulders is nothing.

Now, with all that said, 14-way tops are really only of benefit if each individual divider goes all the way to the bottom. The point of a 14-way top is to keep the clubs more organized, but also to limit grip tangle at the bottom of the bag. If the dividers don't go all the way down then the clubs will still lean and tangle all they want, so it's still going to be frustrating getting the clubs in and out of the bag. In this case I actually prefer to have the 4-way top because it gives more room at the top of the bag to maneuver the club around when taking it in or out. It's all preference though. To some the added value of organization at the top of the bag is more beneficial than grip tangle, so having 14 full length dividers isn't a make or break option. The problem with 14 full length dividers is added cost and the fact that there are not many bags on the market that have it.

So, what's my preference? I actually prefer a 5-way top. My current bag is the Nike Sport Lite II bag and it's incredibly lightweight which is great for walking. The top is basically a PING 4-series top with an extra well up top for the putter. It's fantastic as you have the putter in the very top section that sits just above the section for the woods. Then you split the irons in the middle sections, followed by wedges in the bottom section. This way the woods and putter headcovers don't get tangled and there's plenty of room for getting the clubs in and out.

I'd disagree based on my experience in comparing 14 way vs 4 way stand bag weights. The 14 ways are traditionally noticeably heavier to me. For example, a SM Three 5 was always significantly lighter feeling to me vs. a Four 5. Some of that may be due to the 14 way bags typically being bulkier than their 4 way counterparts (more pockets, bells, whistles, etc.). That said, I've yet to compare a 4.5 LS 4 way to a 4.5 LS 14 way, that would be a good test and may change my perceptions.

Why not look at a direct comparison... C130 14-way vs C130 5-way. I can only find Amazon product weights which list the 5-way at 9 lb and the 14-way at 10 lb, but without ounces known I'd almost bet the difference is down to half an lb and rounding error. If someone can point to more accurate and precise weights, I'd love to see them.

Using a bag with a 14 way divider would be silly for those of us that have migrated to a minimalist (8 clubs here) approach. Prefer one divider when walking, keeps the forgings from banging into each other.

Amazingly close distribution of votes:

Cart Bag with 14-way divider - 76

Stand Bag with 4-way divider - 91

Stand Bag with 14-way divider - 80

But... the 4-way standbag is winning.

As I don't want to have two bags , I need one bag that suits a push cart and freedom to go to range/walking 9 holes. Have SM 3.5 today , but when on a push cart there is club tangling. Looking for a bigger bag, like the new 4.5 ls 14 way to have less club tangle and also a bigger top (10.5"). It's quite expensive though.

As far as cart bags go, I've just noticed there's quite a bit of difference in the size of the top dividers. The top/dividers on my quite ancient Ping Pioneer seems to be larger than on my newer 2016 Titleist Deluxe cart bag. Hard to tell just by looking at them, but when in use, the extra size definitely makes the Ping much easier to use. I'll have to remember this the next time I'm bag shopping.

I bought a 3.5 last month because I could get it for $120. Less than two weeks later I traded it in and bough the 4.5 LS 4-way. Had to pay an additional $100 but it is leaps and bounds better. If you walk a fair amount go with the 4 way top. I get barely any club tangle and when you walk there is virtually no chatter.

I just switched from a 14 way to a 6 way bag and find it about the same. Pros and cons are different with each bag. So it depends on what you want to maximize around. With the 14 way love the fact that it kept the grips from tangling, but I didn't like the way I had to organize them in a circular pattern. With the 6 way I can see my clubs better and can grab multiple at once with no issue, but they get tangled sometimes.

I'm thinking about switching to a '17 Ogio Silencer, but for no other real reason than I had some Goodwill finds that, when combined with the 50% trade bonus at RBG, will cover the cost and my total out-of-pocket will be in the $30-40 range. My curren 14-way cart bag only has full-length dividers between rows so I still get some binding, especially when on the push cart. I just have to figure out if the Silencer mechanism will play nice with my Golf Tags before pulling the trigger.

I've used 14-way cart bags for years. Super annoying when a course is cart-path only. I'm actually thinking about grabbing a lightweight 4-way standbag for tournament play - eek!

Recently went with Titleist Players 5 -Way, as it fits how I like my clubs separated. Good stand, yet stands upright easily. Rather light too, at 4.8lbs for walking or push cart, and well made. Plus I like the way the legs lay down flat when in push cart or golf cart.

I looked at the 14 way, but it seemed too large in circumference and ridged when multiple bags go in the trunk.

I had my pro shop order a 4.5LS 14-way for me this week. I've had a couple Titleist 14-way bags over the years, but I didn't like their color choices at all with the 2017 offerings.
