Grinding a wedge!!!!

is it possible to polish a wedge with a grinding wheel?

That's exactly what I used, just be deliberate and use caution cause the stone wheel works fast.

Just removed some of the guards from the grinder and went at the head with some leather gloves on.

Polishing is better done by hand or with a very fine belt sander. The stone wheels really chomp material quick/abrasively.

Most wedges have a finish applied to the steel head in the first place, like chrome, which adds the majority of the SHINE to a Vokey etc. But, you can hand sand the RAW steel smooth cause I do it all the time with putters. If the finish is just dull and lightly scratched, start with 200 grit sand paper to remove the blemishes and work your way up through 1500 and higher. Once you are up in the 2000+ range the metal should start to be almost mirror-like and a simple Car polishing compound should bring it to a perfect POLISH.

If your club is already smooth just take the polishing compound straight to the head. I use Meguire's polish but have yet to do any full swing clubs cause they just chatter around in the bag anyway. Good luck.

Finally got out on the course to try my new grind. Well, the club seems to get the ball up quicker and I no longer need to open the face entirely up to get a really high flop. I have yet to try any full shots but I am hoping this is a sign that it will effectively play at a higher loft when squared to the ball. Full shot distance used to be 85yds, would be nice to get it closer to 50-60.

Looks unreal, may need to send you my 60 (8) MD Forged wedge once it comes, so I can get it ground to 60 (4). Tried it on a table grinder and didn't turn out well to say the least.

Some of you guys asked me before if i could show you guys a step by step process.

Be aware that operating your tool without caution may give you a severe injury.

It looks very easy but if you never tried it, you will never know how hard it is to make them perfect.

Hope this is help some of your questions.

Joe

Marking and planning!

Start slowly on the area that need grinding the most to have some room for mistakes or a slip. Slow but sure is my best advice

Keep going up slowly and feel your movement along the marking line and the corner area, apply pressure as necessary.

Keep checking on your weight on how far you are going.

Rough finish product.

Flap wheel finishing.

Check your finish product!

Great work!

While Joe didn't do these I had a set off lob wedges from the MD Forged that I took a bunch off bounce off the back end . Easier to handle around the greens and hard pan bunkers (for me ) out off fluffier bunkers I'll use my 54 bent to 56 to make it have 12 degrees off bounce . With this combination my short game has improved drastically in the few greens a round that I do miss . You gotta know what your doing and make sure you never take the lob wedge off dirt grass (lack of base layer ) or you're digging lol

Could a grinder such as this be used to grind a wedge/tune ferrules? https://www.harborfreight.com/4-inch-x-36-inch-belt-6-inch-disc-sander-97181.html

Thanks in advance

All the best,

Dom

Back in July I bought sm6 wedges...54 and 60 - both s grind. I demo'd the crap out of the wedges one Saturday and found i really liked the turf interaction of the s grind. I especially live the s grind 60. Now, around the greens and for full shots, the s grind 54 is awesome. BUT, my bunker play really started to suffer. I'm a fat and runner in the bunkers and that s grind was just digging way too much.

Last weekend I hit the bullet and picked up a 54-14 sm6 and practiced with it this morning. The higher bounce was immediately noticeable in the bunkers. It was like my old bunker game came right back.

However, around the greens I wasn't impressed. The turf interaction is so much different and I hit more shots a touch heavy.

I notice callaway has a 54-12 and will trade the vokey unless you wedge masters can tell me what grinding the vokey from 14 to 12 will do. Will it make the club a digger in the bunker? Will the 12 degrees be as noticeably better around the greens? It's like I can feel the back of the flange bump the ground with the 54-14...and I don't like it.

If I want to lower the leading edge on open shots would I just add heel relief and leave the toe radius as is? What does grinding the toe radius do? Just to keep balance?

I'd be interested to get my MP33's with this type of sole grind, do you think this would be do-able as a DIY or would it require someone with mad skills?

After reading a bit more its the rounded type grind i'd be interested in not the W i thought they were similar but they are not.

P7240059.jpg

Or theres a more rounded grind but both look very playable.

Last Pic shows the trailing edge grind a bit better.

I just added this Miura 52 degree GW to my collection. The first two pictures show the pre-grind wedge. The primary purpose of this wedge is going to be a fairway/rough advancing club between my PW and LW (of course). I also want to be able to use this from normal grass conditions (lush grasses but not saturated with too much water) to dry conditions. This is the spectrum of Colorado golf. I will also be using this as a 3/4 wedge shot to cover 60-80 yards as well with a little spin. Finally I hope to use this wedge for moderate length greenside bunker play as well. In all, I want a versatile wedge to handle a wide spectrum of bread and butter shots, nothing too extravagant.

I used a dremel tool with a course grit drum bit, a medium grit drum bit, a "flap sanding" bit (see images), a medium metal file, a fine metal file, 120 and 180 grit wet/dry sandpaper. A bit of patience and a steady hand. I would have rather used a belt sander but I don't have one and I wasn't going to buy one just for this purpose. I find using a dremel drum bit works when using a metal file to remove the uneven grinding. Patience is the key. Final swing weight is D4 for the GW. I added the lead tape to get the weight to D5 as an inbetween of my PW (D4) and LW (D7).

I took the wedge out to the range this evening and it performed really well. So well in fact that I am willing to put it in the bag for my 2 day tournament starting tomorrow. Talk about trial by fire. :D

Here's my last job...sandwedge was grinded to match sole profile of 962 irons, lobwedge was back grinded (from full sole to v grind sole).

Used a bench grinder and refinished with sandpaper on rotatory tool.

lost 3 grams in the sw and 6 grams in the lw

THX!

Here are some more w/ M grind combine w/ P grind on it.

The P grind is act like a second bounce, It kicks the club up...thus it will lift the ball up and drop it soft on the green, especially out of the bunker. The M grind will still allow you to lay the club open from a tight lie. This combination grinds will allows the players to be a bit more aggressive from almost any lie.

those cally x tours were great, nice job
