Do Tour pros OWN their equipment/clothes?

I did not mean to infer that anyone was trolling because a lot of things are on the computer, as Socrates and others have noted, and if one doesn't have any valid factual background information, it is easy to read and take something as accurate and factual. The thing to remember is that the Tour is a very small exclusive "club," from Players to caddies to tour reps, and the latter two change positions and employers occasionally and in Matt's case(PXG), it does not benefit him to hurt or insult a Player, especially one as Classy as Rich Beem, a major champion to boot, over a set of irons or bag of clubs, regardless of who his employer or boss is. It is a very small world that they run in. Apologies if I offended someone :) Maddie

I don't think there is any way you could have/should offended anyone and as usual you've provided some great insight. Calming influence.

We all joke about things on here. But when people make unsupported accusations that are intended to belittle a player's character I think that crosses the line.

Claiming to have simply read about it the internet is no defense. In the time it takes to access this site and make a few pointless comments just about anything can be pretty easily checked out - or if true, links provided. Some would rather pop off, then when called on it retreat into the usual name calling and further pointless comments. If you have the goods put them out there, if not maybe consider restraint or simply acknowledging you were misinformed. We all type faster than our brains at times.

Just a slightly different view.

It is a new milestone Hawkeye, I think it's the first time I've seen you called a troll.

LOL, Jonny calls anyone who disagrees with him a troll, not the first time. Looks like he's after Socrates (who never hurt a fly) as well. Oh well.

Usually people don't go any deeper in the alphabet than "a" when they call me names. ;-)

On a slightly related note - so what happens to the clothing? I am guessing the top golfers get new shirts at least every week but I haven;t seen a lot of clothing sales.

Also just wondering about all the clubs that Arnold Palmer had over the years. I remember a camera crew showing walls and walls of clubs and that was years ago. I imagine his heirs could have a tremendous sale and donate a lot to charity with all that.

About the clothes, if Jordan Spieth, for example, is playing three tourneys in a row, what happens with his outfits? Does UA send someone around and replace them? I can't picture him doing laundry, and I can't think that UA wants him wearing repeats, so ....? I wish I knew a tour pro who would give me some stuff from time to time.

This is all taken from the Tour boys that I know, and can certainly differ depending on what tour you're playing on, what kind of status you have within that tour, and what kind of contract that you have with your clothing sponsor.

I know the guys I play with get boxes of stuff sent to their houses each month of new stuff for them and their families from their clothing sponsors. They also have what they are supposed to be wearing each day in their locker or at the house/hotel they are staying at with instructions that go along with what clothes go together and what day. The players get to have input into traditions like the Sunday red, Rickie's orange, or the blue and white that Spieth wears on the final day but they are sent clothes that fit what they are looking for. The big names on tour are now flying private and have plenty of room to bring along more than enough clothing for a stretch of events but when you have things waiting for you in the locker room, hotel, house, etc. you don't have as much that you have to worry about packing to begin with.

You've heard from a few Class A's, and everything else seems to be second hand(I could add to this too but WTF, lol) so why not just ask a real Tour Boi.....

Or, a Web.commer.....

Novel idea I know, getting it first hand and all, sorta lowers the tone of certainty a smidgeon but WTF, lol

Have a great day Gents

My Best,

RP

Hey, mine was all from first hand experience with the Tour guys I know and play with.

Granted, asking them probably makes way too much sense to do, so lets just avoid that hassle.

All the best RP,

EJ

I missed your post but even if I hadn't, like Madison said, your excluded, lol.

However I'm done quoting you cuz that just pisses her off worse, lmao

Yes, the clothing is owned. It gets donated when the player is finished with it and sometimes it can be interesting to see who it winds up on. I've seen logo'ed people around town from time to time and it always makes me smile. New clothing, shoes, outerwear, staff bags get delivered on a cycle or whenever the player needs more.

I think the only exception is PXG. If my memory serves me correctly, Rich Beem had a set on loan to him or he was paying for them in installments. Apparently the credit card didn't go through and they were starting to put pressure on him to pay. I don't think they actually got to the point of repossessing the irons from him. He eventually fired some low numbers with the irons at the PGA Championship and they let him keep the irons without paying.

If that's true I hate PXG all the more

Again, inaccurate story. Actually absolutely no one put any pressure on Rich. The tour rep ran the card a few times and it didn't go through and he jokingly told Rich that he knew where to find him and they went there own ways. They were so worried about getting paid that they reshafted the irons for Rich a few weeks later. A lot of pressure there, haha. Rich then saw him a few weeks before the PGA, gave him another card, and the rep, Matt Rollins, misplaced the numbers and saw Rich at the PGA and told him he'd wait until that Sunday to get the numbers again because if he Played well, the irons were on PXG. Matt and PXG handled it with Class. It's a set of golf clubs, it's not an S63, lol. Take care guys :) Maddie

Still though....doesn't speak to highly of Beemer. I mean a GROWN arse man can't manage his finances enough to pay for a set of golf clubs? I am sorry "with class" is not how the grown ups typically operate on that sort of thing. To me, a respectable adult would have refused the merchandise until they could afford it. Beem IS NOT 22yrs old, but if what you say is true Maddie- I think he acts like an immature kid.

Said he'd been traveling for awhile and ran up on the end of his limit. Who knows, but he's telling the story on himself and PXG didn't care so what's the harm to anyone?

From the Tour guys that I know, they are free to do what they want with basically everything that they get. There are some proto/confidential things that have to go back if they leave the test site with them, but most things are theirs. I know I've gotten a few things from buddies that they have as extra. I've even been given clothes that they been given specifically in my size.

I read last year a pro (name escapes me) was taken to a range to try out a prototype for Taylormade (I think it was). He liked the club so much that he wouldn't let it go at all at the end of the session. They promised him one of the first lot when they were finished and he said no way, I want this one. In the end, they drew up a NDA and he agreed that it would not leave his garage, let alone go into his bag until a certain date (announcement date)

They have dry cleaning services at all these events. They don't go to the laundry mat. Now if he wants something they will get it to them,

Yep, I can confirm that. Andres Gonzalez mentioned this to me one time. He said they just put a bag in the locker room at night and by morning it's done and waiting for them. It's a tour benefit and they don't have to pay for it.

Matt's said that he got a care package from Nike once every quarter or so.

No doubt they get their clothes to keep and then some.

In other minority sports, especially if you're starting out, sponsors, in lieu of money will give out product to you. a) it's stuff that can be seen when you go out b) it's usually cheaper for them c) if you sell it to someone else, odds on the product is still out there in the market.

This ex-NFL player i listen to on the radio, Marcellus Wiley, said when he signed his first Nike endorsement contract, he could go into any Nike Store and had a 60k limit to how much he could buy. I think he also said on game day there was a nike box waiting for him at his locker. Cleats, clothes, etc inside
