Ping Power Spec Loft - Clever or concerning fad?

Hi everyone,

 

I thought I'd take the pulse on this one. There seems to be two ways to look at this new "setting" called Power Spec Loft.

 

First, you can look at it from the positive... this is a way to have normal irons, and also be able to have a clear idea of how far you can de-loft without causing too much change in performance.

 

The other, negative way of looking at it is that Ping is allowing for loft creep without "owning" it. At least the general lofts are the main choice, but is PSL going to be the new normal?

 

Somehow, I almost think it's a device to say, "hey, we would go just as far as your irons if we jacked our lofts, too". I also know it's a way of dumping a little bounce without much of an issue for customers who wouldn't know how much is too much, etc. Personally, I think the more spread long irons are an excellent decision. I'm of the opinion that there should be a little more gap in-between long irons relative to in-between the short irons. Margin of error and all...

 

Anyhow, what do you think about Power Spec Lofts?

It's a nice option for players to be able to play whatever lofts fit them, for any club...driver through putter

I like that you can order the lofts this way as it seems like PING put some thought into how to get the most out of this head distance-wise without affecting the integrity of the club. Since I've learned to embrace the newer lofts, I'm not as peeved about companies decreasing lofts. I'm just glad to be an informed consumer and select the clubs I play to coincide with the new specs.

This...Ping has been bending irons strong for years if you asked for it. I ordered a set of I20's a "quarter strong". Which was basically bent one degree strong. Ping has decided to simply market this technique. Wise of them.

The "Power Spec" is a little different than just bending all clubs "1/4 club strong" as it were. The lofts for the set are virtually the same at the long irons and wedges, it's the middle of the set that has the most tweaking.

 

Personally, I wouldn't do it unless you find you have gapping issues or just hit the middle irons too high. Most guys don't demo the whole set before purchase though but in this case it would be a good idea (if possible).

Choice is always good. Personally, I've never been too concerned with the number on the bottom of the iron as long as it produces a consistent distance and there aren't gapping issues.

As someone who has a launch angle that is slightly higher than I would like, I welcome that option. I'm not concerned about distance, I'd just be happy with the same distance, just taking it down a notch.

This is a phrase I have not heard before. However, I usually get my irons adjusted 1/2 club stronger, I just never knew there was a name for it.

Many of us hit the ball high. Too high in the short irons especially. The power spec lofts are pretty much exactly what I'd want my lofts to be. So I think choice is good.

Power specs give you a 5* gapping of scoring clubs - 7i onwards.

 

I have 4 clubs in the 20's*....21-23-26-29.5
