Oates Vic Open

Followed and watched the Oates Vic Open the past few days. Final two days streamed online.

I just wanted to get some opinions of what people thought of the format which has been running for a couple of years now. Men & Woman Competing at the same time :

• First two days played over two different courses.
  
• 36 Hole cut.
  
• Day three played on the same course.
  
• 54 Hole cut. Cut players do get rewarded financially.
  
• Final day played again on the same course.
  
• They alternate men and woman's groups off the tee.
  
• Equal prize money.
  

The winners this year were :

 

Mel Reid (-16)

Dimi Papadatos (-16)

Not familiar, vaguely recall a blurb about it on Sirius PGA channel. At first blush I am VERY INTRIGUED that from the original post it seems both the men and women had identical scores. Now I want to know more....

 

-I presume different tee boxes.

-other than tee box were there any other differences? (ie same hole par4 vs. par5)

-did the 2 fields (men vs women) score the same holes the same in relation to par?

-was the men's winner and the women's winner the same "type" of player relative to their field? (ie are both Mel Reid and Dimi Papadatos considered "bombers"? "tactitions"? "Great putters"?

 

So many questions.....seems VERY COOL! Love to see that here in US during the fall silly "shoulder" season.

I was glad to see Mel Reid get a victory. I am looking forward to seeing more of her on the LPGA this year.

Though i didn't look at it this year, its a great model for how to save a tournament from extinction.

The Aus tour has been on life support for years now.

So you take a tournament out of the big city, but still accessible, 90 minute drive, make it essentially free ($5 parking), get lots of keen volunteers.

Crowds are not big and its very relaxed and easy to walk around.

Good courses by the seaside, so there are other things to do as well.

Throw in some weather at times, like 3-4 club wind on saturday.

People i talk to really like the men and women mixed together.

it has been a real success.
