What golf trips are you planning to take in 2017???

Recommended Posts

My group and I will be taking our 24th annual drive down to South Carolina on Wednesday March 22. SC can be a little dicey in March, but that's what works for all 8 of us. We'll be playing 36-36-36-18, then drive home. We look forward to this trip every year and the emails start flowing in January. One of my favorite comments in an email regarding etiquette, is when Robbie hits one in the fairway, proper comment is "nice out Robbie". There are usually about a dozen or so emails/day. Then the trip! The laughs start upon entering the van for the ride down and end as we exit the van at home.

I have a few lined up. Most one day 'trips' but they are courses out of my state (Illinois) so I'm considering them as trips.

  • Austin, TX for golf and BBQ in Late March
  • Irish Course at Whistling in late April
  • Sand Valley in early May
  • Punta Cana or Cabo with another couple who avidly golfs (This should be fun as hell)

Heading to Austin Friday, stumbling off the plane to play Kizer, then Vaaler Creek, Falconhead (or Crystal Falls?) and winding up with Wolfdancer. Will update the Austin Golf thread with condition of courses, etc if I don't die of brisket overdose.

As of now trips in various stages of planning are:

1) Florida Memorial Day (parents have a place in Naples and can play many great courses in the area)

2) Mount Airy/Poconos over the summer

3) Vegas or Reno Labor Day

4) Back to Florida in October and December

Headed to FL to play Bonita Bay, CC of Naples, Old Collier, & Quail Ridge. Then Caledonia , True Blue, and 2 TBA's in February. After that it will be time to buckle down and get ready for the upcoming season.

there are so many great courses in naples, have you narrowed it down to those specificly? There's a bunch of threads about great golf courses in Naples

Yes there is. I was visiting friends who were members at those clubs. They were all very good but Old Collier and the Sabal course (Bonita Bay Naples) were my 2 favorites.

Punta Cana is a great option, take it from a local... You can play Corales and Punta Espada which are within 2 KM of each other and then drive an hour east and hit Teeth of the Dog and Dye Fore.

I'd definitely consider hitting Lawsonia Links, University Ridge (Madison), Wild Rock (Dells), or SentryWorld on your Sand Valley trip.

The Bull at Pinehurst Farms is a good companion course for the Irish.

Unfortunately both of those are just 1 day trippers. I'm from Naperville so not enough time of daylight with two rounds. Tee time at Irish is 11a. Couldn't convince my playing partner to wake up earlier than 7 :/

Yeah we are definitely doing punta if we go there. So many forced carries last time I was there; really loved it. I liked la Cana, too, during twilight. Range, golf and transport was $110. Not bad for a PB dye course in the Caribbean

"Did we just become best friends?!"

All those courses are on the list. The Austin gang were super helpful at pin pointing where to go. They said Salt Lick after vaaler was a must.

They also said shawdowglen was worth while.

My BBQ list includes: La Barbecue, Salt lick after vaaler, kerlin and magnolia cafe. Going to franklins means standing in like and not golfing.

Might be the wrong thread but is Warren at Notre Dame worthwhile? Plans are to play every Coore Crenshaw in the next 5 years as the list stands now.

Yes, very. Blackthorn is also a decent course in South Bend.

It's a pity to drive all that way and only get in one round.

I would assume Streamsong is more affordable in the summer, yeah? Are you staying on property? That's one resort I would love to go to.

Have not booked it yet, but will be in the next few days. I believe the dates I was looking for were about 250 bucks a night which included golf and the room for the night. Going to talk to my dad to see if he wants to go. If not I will invite the wife and she can go to the spa! But yes much more affordable during the summer as it is brutally hot, but I am somewhat use to it. Hydrate hydrate and hydrate.

While not a full fledged golf trip, I'm headed to Traverse City with my wife and daughter in July and will play the Bear and 1 other course in the area.

Then in August my group is headed to either Indy or the Pinehurst area for our annual golf trip. That should be set in stone after the Chicago Golf Show this weekend.

I'm going to do Northern Michigan again in early May. I played Arcadia Bluffs last year and will definitely be there again. I'm also going to add Forest Dunes and likely LochenHeath. I have some good connects so I'm going to inquire about Crystal Downs and the Kingsley Club. My plan is to play 4 rounds in 3 days.

I also want to do a French Lick Ross Course, Brickyard Crossings and Warren Golf Course at Notre Dame trip in late summer if I can pull it off.

Headed to Pebble in June! Also going to play Poppy while out there. Also, going to Kansas for a wedding in June, hoping to get on Prairie Dunes, already planning on playing Sand Creek Station though too. Going up to Tulsa to play Southern Hills, and already booked for Hilton Head for Christmas!

Also headed to Dallas sometime this summer, planning a buddy's trip. Any suggestions would be welcomed (be warned: these guys are cheap) ;)

Anybody every play golf in the Ocean City, MD area? They seem to have stepped up their marketing efforts. How would it compare to Myrtle Beach (other than having fewer courses)?

I'm going a couple hours up the road to play with a friend of mine in a couple weeks. Haven't seen him in a while so whatever the course is like it'll be fun to tee it up together again.

As I've gotten older I find the company is more important than the particulars of the golf course, although obviously I'd rather not play at a goat ranch.

The OCMD/Southern Delaware area is an underrated golf destination imo. There's a handful of "top shelf" courses (Bayside, Baywood Greens, Links at Lighthouse Sound, Rum Pointe) that will just satisfy just about every player. There's another 5 or 6 courses that are worth playing too. I've done two April OCMD golf trips with friends and loved it.

I'm not sure why the popularity of OCMD as a golf destination hasn't taken off more. The quality and quantity are there imo. OCMD doesn't have nearly the volume of Myrtle Beach but the best courses are worth making a trip to play. There's usually some pretty good deals to be had in the summer as most people in there area that time of year are at the beach and not playing golf. Late April through early June and September and October tend to be the most popular time for golfers to invade the area.

OCMD is great for golf as is South Jersey. Virginia Beach/Chesapeake area has always disappointed me. Not much of note relative to the other coastal areas.

My wife is working in the UK at the end of May. I am planning on meeting her out there for some tourist activities. Prior to meeting up with her, I will have 3 days to play golf! Unfortunately, I will only be able to play some of the more southern courses. I am going to be playing Royal Birkdale, Royal Liverpool, and Royal St. George's.

well done! How did you like Swinley Forest? You must have some good connections.....

Swinley Forest was fantastic. Really enjoyed it. Great mix of short and long holes, just an ideal place to spend a day playing. I loved the overall look and feel of the club. Whole trip was great. Can't wait to go back.
