Look forward to seeing what people got fit into. Guessing almost everyone got fit into the M2

3 M1's and 2 M2's.

I got fit into an M1 8.5 cranked up. With a HZRDUS Black 6.0 tipped an inch.

Wow surprised at that. Seems like all the tour guys are in the M2. Anyone even try to fit into the 440 :D ?

Not sure if anyone tried the 440. I know Andrew was fit into the M2 D Type, which surprised many of the guys at TM that a player of his caliber would be fit into that option.

I was lucky enough to get an extra night in the hotel because my flight is early tomorrow morning. After heading to In-N-Out with Darrin and Brian, I grabbed a cheap rental car and headed north on I-5 toward Orange County. I met up with Monte Scheinblum for a quick lesson. I figured if I was all the way out here I might as well get some swing work in! A little bonus on top of a Dream day.

So, did you guys just get to pick whatever set of irons/wedges that you wanted built to your specs?

Are they going to build them and send out to you?

Cool, they are hooking you guys up, looks like it was a lot of fun.

From the sound of things today, they are going to ask us for our specs, then they'll build them and send them. I'm thinking I'll go do a quick iron fitting at the TM lab here in town, assuming they have the 770 heads. Apparently no one can get their hands on these things right now, even at TaylorMade! They're calling them unicorns lol.

Congrats on the awesome drivers guys! Did we ever get a definitive answer on what the difference was between the Tour Issue heads and retail heads?

No difference, tour heads are just tested and their specs measured. I'm sure there are people who will say that's wrong, probably to keep sale prices up. That is what I was told a couple years ago on the Sldr Trip.

I was one of the SLDR winners a few years ago and I remember that question being asked (were you at the East Bay location?) and we got the exact same answer you give above. It would be cost prohibitive to build with different materials etc

What a way to wake up!

Is your DF putter getting the boot out of the bag or is it here to stay?

I'm going to need to do some more testing on course to make the decision. Duane Anderson did all of our putter fittings using their MATT system, which is like a video game motion capture system that uses 8 cameras to map your putter's movement in 3D space. He said that since I miss putts off the toe (according to the system) that the putter twists and sends the ball offline. "in the wild" I haven't had a problem with that. In fact, I've had some pretty good results with it. What Duane told me seems to make sense but I need to verify it with my own experience.

Duane fit me into the Spider Platinum mallet (double bend face balanced) 35", 2° flat, 2° strong, SS PISTOL GT 2.0.

In short. I left the putter portion of the fitting with more questions than answers. In the coming weeks I'll try to answer some of those for myself.

**Sorry, this might be the longest post in WRX history**

GolfWRX @ The Kingdom – February 26-28, 2017

The Set Up

As a 4-year WRX "veteran," I’ve followed several OEM-sponsored trip threads. Like all of you, I found myself constantly hitting refresh, eager to see what the guys who had been picked were doing, while at the same time harboring just a bit of envy! Anyone who has hung around the forums for even a short time knows that WRX and the OEM’s really roll out the red carpet for these things. Every time a new trip contest thread would open, I would anxiously apply, hoping it might be my chance. On the night of February 14th (coincidence?? I think not….) a PM from HipCheck showed up that simply said “So…..Want to go to the Kingdom?” As soon as I saw it, my adrenaline went through the roof! I read the email at about 10pm and it really truly was that “kid on Christmas eve” feeling. It took me at least an extra hour or two to fall asleep! The next 12 days would craaaaawwllll by!

Sunday, February 26th

I must say, I feel bad for the east coasters on this trip! They all dealt with ungodly travel hours, last minute flight changes, and even a death-defying landing, but we all made it to Carlsbad and the amazing Aviara Resort in one piece.

From the beginning, I could tell we had a solid group of guys, and I knew we were going to hit it off. I'm pretty sure Schnee was the real MVP though, in case anyone is wondering! Chris is a great guy with a great sense of humor and he made everyone feel like they'd known him for years. Brian Knudson and Zak Kozuchowski were very welcoming, and made sure we all got our first bit of SWAG – the coveted WRX poker chip! Both of these guys are just super nice, fun guys to hang out with. They showed genuine interest in getting to know each of us, and it was really cool to see some of the faces behind this great site! Zak has a great swing too!

We all chatted at the resort for a bit, then Uber’d to Chandler’s for dinner. There we met up with Jory Mendes (Global Brand Communications Manager) and Ryan Lauder (Director of Consumer Engagement) from TaylorMade. Both guys are very laid back and just a lot of fun to be around. It’s very apparent that they love their jobs, love TaylorMade, and love golf! Over drinks and dinner, they answered questions on all topics, and told stories about Tiger, DJ, Sergio, and Jory’s man-crush, Jon Rahm. Side note, everyone we talked to at TM seems to be very impressed with Rahm, and they are expecting BIG things from him. Tom Kroll mentioned that they have a series of metrics they look at when they pick players to really focus on for branding purposes, and Rahm was off the charts good in all areas. Tom believes he’ll be inside the top 10 worldwide by year’s end, and that he has world #1 qualities. Big-time stuff. Anyway, terrible segue, but the food at Chandler’s was amazing!

Jory wrapped things up by giving us a run-down of Monday’s itinerary: welcome and breakfast at The Kingdom, then each of us would be paired with a fitter that had been matched to us based on a player profile they had us fill out ahead of time. We would get 3-4 hours with our fitter, and Jory told us to be demanding – hit anything we wanted, in any order we wanted, and don’t be satisfied until we got it right! The impression I got was that we were getting the Tour player treatment, and I could not WAIT! We all headed back to the resort and got an early bedtime (well, early for me, the east coasters had been up nearly 24 hours!)

Monday, February 27th

We had all been watching the weather forecast for the better part of a week prior to the trip, so we knew there was a good chance of some rain on Monday. What we woke up to was not encouraging, but I think we all figured we would eventually get a few good breaks from the rain to get everything done. Sadly, this would turn out to be wishful thinking….

Despite the weather, we were all pumped as we met up in the lobby. We took the shuttle down to The Kingdom, dreaming aloud about all things Tour Issue! We pulled up to “Building 1” and set our bags down inside, dried off a bit and started drooling over the TM hall of fame.

Chandler Carr (Product Creation Manager) and Jory met us in the lobby and gave each of us a nice TaylorMade umbrella. Love me some SWAG! Then we took a mini-tour of the facility, focusing mainly on the Tour club-building room. We’d be back later to actually see our drivers being built, but we got to walk around and gape at some product

Anyone need a HZRDUS Black? :)

From there we headed up the The Kingdom!

The Kingdom is directly across the street from Building 1, and this is where all of our equipment testing would take place. As soon as you walk in, you are greeted by a giant, signed mural of Jason Day!

We were ushered into the locker room where we had our own nameplates in our lockers!

Got some breakfast, got introduced to the fitters and Tom Kroll (Global Product Line Manager), and then had another little tour of the facility. They have an indoor 3D motion capture putting room, and 3 large hitting bays, one of which was full of extra gear and a swing robot.

They also had two other bays that we would be using for testing, given the conditions.

Heartbreaking, because the range is just PURE! They told us the greens on the range roll at about a 10!

One of the really cool things that they use at The Kingdom in their testing is dual-Trackmans at each end of the range. They have wiring built underground, and this allows them to test both the initial launch as well as ball conditions during the descent with accuracy down to a few inches! Some of this data was presented to us in the TP5/TP5x demo. Really cool stuff. Doesn’t hurt to have a few extra Trackman 4’s lying around….

Next up, Mike Fox (Category Director - Balls and Accessories) gave us a really cool presentation about the TP5 and TP5x ball. Obviously they are going to rave about their new product and how revolutionary the new tech is, but….they might be right! The basic premise is that they've designed the cores and cover with varying degrees of firmness to eliminate spin on swings over 70mph, while still allowing max cover "grip" and spin under 70mph for wedges:

The results(robot tested)

:

For those asking about holding greens:

As has been mentioned, the rain really threw everyone for a loop and caused TM to have to scramble big time. What was originally scheduled to be a 3-4 hour one-on-one, full bag fitting with our own personal master fitter turned into a little bit of a scramble of ball testing, driver fitting, and putter fitting. I’ll be honest, while I know they were thrown off of what they had planned, I was disappointed with how this time was handled. We had all been sitting in a pretty chilly open-air bay for about 45 minutes, and weren’t exactly ready to jump right into things, especially not directly into a driver and 6 iron, which is what they wanted for the ball testing. I managed to sneak some wedge swings in the driver fitting bay before Darrin (DNice26) did his fitting, so I got a little warm, but I think we all could have used some more direct warm up time. However, you work with what you got! Bay 1 was set for the ball testing, and they had a camera crew in place to try to catch some raw footage a la Jon Rahm’s commercial. Bay 2 was set for driver fitting. One really cool perk here was that we were all fitted by Jason Werner, who happens to be the guy that Jason Day asks for when he comes to The Kingdom! He fooled a few of us into thinking he was a bit disinterested at first. Turns out, the guy is just THAT good at his job! He’d watch us hit a handful of shots with our current gamers, ask a few questions here and there, then put a club together for us. Most of the guys only hit a couple combinations of drivers/shafts, because he had us dialed in so fast! I think a few guys may have been unsure about what they were fit into on this day, as several got off to a cold start and weren’t swinging their best. However, it was interesting for me to see everyone on the course Tuesday, as the feedback was overwhelmingly positive about drivers! A couple tweaks in weight settings were made by some, but all in all it seemed like we were all put into a driver that actually did perform better.

I did ball testing first, and as I posted already here (http://www.golfwrx.c...0#entry15063004), the TP5x is just a better ball for me than what I’ve been competing with, which is the ProV1x. I’ve tested a handful of golf balls this year, and I am flat out impressed with the TP5x. The things that stand out head and shoulders above everything else are the higher launch/higher peak height with long irons, and the pure stability of this ball on full shots, especially off the tee. This thing wants to go SO straight. I made a few squirrely swings on my tee shot on the golf course Tuesday and would have expected more curve, but it just holds its line. One round is not enough to say this is the be-all-end-all for golf balls, but I’m VERY impressed and I don’t say that lightly. I will definitely be doing some additional head to head with the TP5 vs. TP5x, but I don’t foresee anything getting in the way of me putting the TP5x in the bag for the year. Of all the products we tested, I think you all owe it to yourself to try this ball. It’s going to change some things in the industry.

Next, I worked my way over to the driver fitting area. I hit probably 10 shots with my SLDR, and was hitting them really well.

I was surprised Jason had me hit as many as I did. I was giving him great numbers and he’d just say hit a few more and ask a question or two between swings. I let him know what my most recent results at Cool Clubs had been (2017 M1, 8.5*, Accra FX-260), so he had me try an M1 and I was hitting it WAAAAY right. He tried a couple different shaft options (see pic, no Accra available), but nothing was keeping it in play. I had the same issue with the 2016 M series as well, so it wasn’t a huge shock, but it did have me worried for a minute that I wouldn’t get fit into a good match for me! We then tried my current shaft (UST VTS 6x) with the M1 and I was at least keeping it on the course, just still a bigger right miss than I wanted to see. Finally, Jason handed me the M2 D-Type with my UST shaft. Bingo! Hit a few that actually went left a bit! Most of that was probably a compensation from such big right misses with the M1, so once I settled in a bit, we had our answer. While the averages don’t really look better with the D-type compared to SLDR, I had a few mis-hits in the D-Type grouping that, if removed, would have shown a more accurate picture of the results. Peak ball speed with SLDR was 175, peak with D-Type was 178, and I was getting a slightly lower flight (122’ compared to 135’) that I really liked! It was a bit amusing though, everyone at TM seemed shocked that I got put into the D-Type. I’m not too sure why, but apparently that was weird to them! It made sense to me though, as the SLDR had a left-bias for a lot of people that was problematic, and I’ve never once had that issue. TM purposely moved away from that tendency with the M family, which might explain why I hit them right of right. Regardless, the D-Type is in the bag! Fast forward about an hour and Chandler Carr personally built my driver for me in the Tour club-building room :)

When we got down there, I saw an unfamiliar shaft next to the D-Type head. I didn’t quite put the pieces together right away, but it turns out they didn’t have my UST shaft, so they gave me the newer (better) UST Elements Chrome Platinum Prototype PT6F5! Supposed to be a very similar profile to the Rogue 125. I was a bit anxious to see if it would hold up as the right fit, but after just a couple swings on the range at Aviara, I was convinced! It’s a bomber

In the interim between the driver/ball testing and our clubs being built, we all went back to Building 1 for some more in-depth touring of the ball lab and machining labs. The ball lab was eye-opening. It’s amazing to see the amount of material and individual attention that goes into building a golf ball! It made myself and several others appreciate why we pay a premium for a good golf ball. It also made a lot of sense why TM was pretty pissed off about the KSig! We got to see how each layer of the ball is produced, tested, and finished – really cool process. These guys seem like they have some fun coming up with different ways to create and test golf balls, all the way down to buying various concrete/brick slabs at Home Depot and firing golf balls through cannons at them to test durability on "cartpath" like material!

Everyone else had completed their putter fittings at The Kingdom earlier in the afternoon, so Chandler built my driver first and I headed back to the putter fitting room with Duane Anderson to wrap up. Tom Kroll introduced Duane as one of, if not the most knowledgeable people in the world where putting is concerned (Dave Stockton being the other). I was looking forward to this all day, as putting is the area of my game where I feel I have the most room for improvement. Additionally, I’ve just never been in love with the Directed Force that’s currently in my bag, and given that my last putter was a TM Daddy Long Legs, I was very curious to see if I’d get fit into a Spider or something similar. The putting room at The Kingdom is a small room, about 10x15’ maybe, with a 10-12 foot putt right down the middle of the room so that you are putting from the same spot every time. After calibrating the MATT system (which is a really cool 3d motion capture system!), Duane had me hit a half dozen putts or so with the DF, asking questions about my putting history along the way. After he had seen enough, he grabbed a Spider Platinum for me and had me hit some putts with it. I was going through my full routine on all putts, including using a line on the ball. Duane gathered some data with the Spider, then kind of paused everything to chat. He asked me to go through my routine and stop before making the stroke. At address, he asked me to look at the hole and describe if it looked left, square, or right. It appeared slightly left to my eye, and he said “good” (lol). Then he said “fix it.” Nothing else, just fix it. I adjusted a bit, looking at the hole until I felt I was squarely set up. Then he had me putt. Draino. Duane looked at me and we both smiled. He explained that I am too ball/line/putter oriented and not enough target oriented. He feels that people who use a line on the ball often get stuck in this type of pattern, in that we see a line on the ball, a line on the putter, and everything is perfect down in front of us. However, if you look at the hole and it seems just a bit off, the brain will react enough to cause a manipulation of the club. He didn’t mind the line on the ball so much, and in fact left that up to me to use or not, but he wanted me to look at the hole almost the entire time I was setting up to putt, rather than focusing so much on getting the putter perfectly lined up to the ball’s line. To practice this, he had me hit three 6-foot putts from different locations while looking at the hole the entire time. Drained all 3. More smiles. He said that’d be a good drill for me to work on, but really just to be target-oriented and allow myself to be reactionary to the target, not to focus on the ball at my feet. He then went on to discuss his thoughts on the Directed Force vs. Spider and other putters. Long story short, the DF is lie-angle balanced, so if you hit the ball dead in the sweet spot and the putter is on its correct lie, it’s a great putter. However, as soon as you miss the sweet spot just by a fraction, it becomes incredibly unstable. I am notorious for having a left path and face in my putting stroke, but I hit the ball slightly on the toe, which balances things out. Unfortunately, with the DF, toe misses are magnified and the face goes all over the place. He has tested the Spider on mis-hits and it is a much more stable putter across the face. His explanation was that he wanted me in that putter and that putter only, as it would allow me to “be me” and make more putts. He didn’t want to change my stroke or anything, just find a putter that fit what I was doing and again, to be a more target-oriented putter. It was a short and sweet fitting with a bit of a putting lesson flavor mixed in, and it was great! I’ll be getting a Spider Platinum, 2* strong, with the old Daddy Long Legs extra long Winn grip that I really like. I also tinkered around with the Berwick mini-mallet, and really liked it, but I’m going to take Duane’s input and stick with the Spider and see how things go. Really enjoyed my time with Duane!

The remainder of our time at The Kingdom was spent swinging some irons and wedges in the now-enclosed bay. I think we were all in the same area, just chatting and taking turns hitting a few at a time. I hit a few 7 irons in the 770 and they feel SO good! Buttery. Best feeling TM iron I’ve ever hit by far. I didn’t hit any of the 750, as they just look a little smaller than I like at address for the time being, and I’m really just primarily interested in seeing what the 770 can do for me.

Soon after, we all piled back into the resort shuttle and headed back to get cleaned up. We met up with Jory, Ryan and a few other TM guys for drinks/dinner at Barrel Republic and Campfire. The food at Campfire was choice! Beef tartar hit the appetizer spot, then I had an amazing meat pie with smoked brisket, braised lamb shank, root vegetables, and blue cheese! Have we mentioned how good the food was on this trip??

Tuesday, February 28: #TaylorMadeTuesday!

Everybody was up bright and early, meeting in the lobby of the hotel at 6:15am. We piled into the shuttle to head down the hill to the course, and found out Brian (BCULAW) had to burn the early morning oil for a client of his at 4am I believe?! This poor guy had to have been running on absolute fumes the whole time! He and I were paired with Tom Kroll and Ryan Lauder from TM though and we had a great time out there! Brian hit the ball solidly all day it seemed, and I was impressed with his driving – very nice trajectory and a soft draw on his well-struck tee shots. Also, Aviara is PURE!

Looking back down 18 when we first arrived:

Opening tee shot:

Tom Kroll is a very good player, and we found out he spent a few years on the Nike Tour (now Web.com) back in the 90’s. It’s apparent, as he’s one of those guys that just controls his ball all the way around the course. Nothing flashy, just a solid player and a good guy!

Overall, I’d say my game was very sloppy most of the day. The course drained impressively well, but there were still a lot of very soggy lies and I struggled with several long pitches/half wedges, and never quite had my yardages on approaches quite figured out. The good news is the driver was money! Between the TP5x and the new driver, it’s tough to really hit a tee shot that curves off line much. I’m feeling very good about where things ended up at the top of my bag, especially after all the fitting and testing I’ve done in the last two months! Once this new Spider Platinum shows up, I might be a real golfer again!

After our round, we chatted with the TM guys again briefly before they had to head back to the “office.” Jory stuck around with us for an extra 20 minutes or so to recap the experience, and then dropped the best news we’d heard all day. He informed us that the plan all along had been to fit us all into new gear from top to bottom through the bag, but given the weather, it just wasn’t possible. TaylorMade wanted to take care of us though, so they are going to get our specs for irons/wedges etc and will be hooking us up! Needless to say, lots of giddy smiles all around!

It was time to head our own separate ways, but I’m looking forward to staying in touch with the TaylorMade guys and can’t begin to express my gratitude to them for the hospitality they showed us these last few days. They have a fantastic crew of guys who love golf, clearly enjoy working together, and who still love to see regular players like us find improvements in our games from the equipment they are making.

HUGE thanks to both GolfWRX and TaylorMade for inviting me to be a part of this group! It was such a fun few days, and honestly it’s something I wish all of our core group of WRX members could experience. Picking the brains of the guys at the top of the industry and getting a peak behind the curtain is just a really cool deal, and this is something I’ll never forget! Thanks for reading, and if you have questions, please let me know!

Finally, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do not hit quote or reply to this post! Lol, if I see someone reply and leave this whole thing in, then ask a one sentence question at the bottom, I think I’m going to get banned….. :P

Drew, that was one of the best write ups I've seen in a while, thanks for sharing the experience and pictures. I've poked in your swing thread every now and then, do you think the D-Type will be versatile enough (in terms of adjustability) if you make any big swing changes down the road? Or are you done with the major work, and just tweaking? I know the driver is fit to how you're currently swinging, just wondering if you might lose some of that optimization down the road. I certainly hope not, of course. Hope you'll be able to re-dial it back in if necessary.

Maybe ....

It won't feature me, though! The ball testing was first out of the shoot yesterday. I was completely cold and hadn't hit a ball in a week and a half. My first 5 warm up shots were all bottom groove and I threw in a smooth hosel rocket to go with it. By the time the cameras started rolling, I had the worst case of stage fright I have ever felt in my life - shaking like a leaf!!! I played baseball in front of 12,000 fans and never felt as nervous as I did in front of 5 guys and 2 cameras!!!

I'm sure there's a joke somewhere in the last half of that last sentence, but I can't quite put my finger on it.

Where's MTLJeff, I'm sure he can figure it out.

Yeah. I sort of walked right into that one.

Hahah! :cheesy: It took me a good nights sleep and two re-reads to realize what the hell Peanut was talking about, durrrr! :cheesy:

Great write up Andrew! I really enjoyed reading about the putter fitting as I was curious what they'd thought about the DF. Interesting feedback about you being more ball/line oriented and how much of a difference it makes to change that focus to something else. As I previously mentioned, I can't wait to get out on the course and play some golf to check out your new swag! Any idea how long til you get your putter?

Also, that picture you took looking back down the 18th fairway upon arrival is a great looking picture, I dig it!

Great write up and really informative! Seems like you guys had a blast even with the poor weather. I'm interested to see more about the new balls. It seems like Taylormade is going all in on them.

So, mini heart attack scare (would be my 4th!). I just landed in Virginia after flying all night. I got to baggage claim and realize very quickly that my clubs did not appear to have made the trip home. I went to the claims desk and was in the process of filling out the forms when the service employee said "Here they are."

I turned around to find the baggage handler carrying an empty travel bag in one hand, my shoe bag in the other hand, and my stand bag on his shoulders. All of the zippered pockets on my stand bag were open, including the ball pocket containing nearly 2 dozen TP5 Protos and the head and headcover for my newly fitted M1.

I panicked! I am still not sure that everything made the trip, but it appears to have. Apparently, the zipper on my travel bag pulled apart when the bag was being loaded. The contents must have spilled out because my irons were not in their proper location in the bag dividers. I guess security went through the pockets of my bag looking for hazardous objects or something, because that's the only explanation I can think of for all of the zippers being opened. I'm hoping I dodged a bullet, but won't know for sure until I get home and have a chance to do an inventory.

Great write up...couldn't have asked for a better overview of the trip. Happy for you guys & here's hoping that many wrx'ers get this opportunity over the years.

I didn't even try the M2, D, or the 440.

Jason put me in the M1 460 9.5 standard weight all the way draw and forward with the GD BB S6.

Whaaaaat, dude, make sure to file a claim with the airline ASAP. I think they usually require you to file a claim with in 24 hours of arrival to your destination. I hope they make it right, that's bogus. What airline was it?

I had an issue where Delta lost my luggage last year during the meltdown and when I got my suitcase, it was covered in what looked like stale oil. I filed a claim immediately and got reimbursed the full amount I originally paid for the luggage upon uploading a receipt to their claims center.

Great writeup Drew!

Sorry to hear about the luggage problem Brian. Might not be a bad idea to file a claim like robrey85, just in case. If everything turns up, you can probably just withdraw the claim.
