People wonder why I pick on Tiger so much. It's threads like this. Everyone clinging to memories of great golf played... Wait for it....9 years ago.

It's been over for a long time.

Are you forgetting he won 5 times, which was about 30% of the tournaments he entered, and won player of the year in 13?

I didn't forget. But that was a flash in the pan considering he was 5 years removed from his last major.

Agreed when you compare it to his major runs, but we can't say that winning 5 times in one season isn't great golf!

Great was the wrong word. Dominant was what I should have said.

That putting tip he got from Steve Stricker went a long way that yr.

He should just buy into the Golf Channel. He makes them tick as it is,and he's the reason they went from 24/7 infomercials to being big enough that by the late 2000s it was part of everyone's basic cable & satellite packages.

He may as well cash in.

Except, the GC ain't part of "basic" cable package no mo

Because it became so popular, they tried to cash in.

The funny thing to me is the same guys that are glad Tiger is out, because of the way he hogs the telecasts of events he plays in, are the same guys that post mostly in Tiger threads.

I think he'd retire if he hadn't signed those deals with TaylorMade and others recently, he has to keep up appearances for the time being.

Also if it was any other sport than golf, he'd just give up. But the fact that players can win in their 40s (even though a lot that were winning in their early 20s generally don't) means that he'll be happy to keep testing it, taking six months out at a time, rather than outright quitting in my opinion.

Don't think it's great for the game though to have him hanging over it like that if it's going to be like this for another five years or more.

I can think of maybe five players in my lifetime who made some official statement or proclamation that they would never again play in a professional tournament. Jack and Arnie come to mind, and that was at extremely advanced age.

Expecting TW to retire officially is never going to happen. There's no reason for him to.

The one that I always remember is Seve. Because he was European golf, he did it via an official ET press conference. He was relatively young but his back just wouldn't let him do it so he retired, an official announcement to the world. He was very emotional as he announced it.

All the greats know when to call it a day with playing professionally.

He has more opportunity with other golf related endeavors. All in all,it is his call,

I look at this as a solid call on his part.

How many examples to the contrary would it take for you to retract your first contention? Ali, 'The Greatest' didn't.

I just don't know guys.

Tiger changed golf forever, for the players, fans, broadcasters, sponsors, the world basically.

When Tiger plays I agree with most that the spotlight is shone on him. Though I think broadcasters would agree its not normally for playing good golf, more showing what sells. Think Paula Radcliffe in the 2005 London Marathon.

We all wish Tiger would return to what most of us can remember, the concentration, the impossible shots he made possible, the 6 foot putts holed when he needed them most, but most of us remember the never give up attitude.

Perhaps this is why he keeps coming back.

Every time he plays, there's a buzz.

Has anyone ever stopped watching live coverage of one of the majors on TV, cause Tiger or someone else dropped out of contention. I had to find out who won the 2012 US Open the next day :)

Tiger has affected us all with his dominance and brilliance over the years. But do you not think the more he pushes himself to reach those goals again and fails, the more his God status is being tarnished. I admire him trying and still having that hunger, but there comes a time when he has to tell himself enough is enough. Tiger being tiger though I think he will not give up till it becomes impossible.

I wish I could see him playing to 60% of his brilliance again, I think at 60% he would still be winning on Tour. With all those people in his inner circle, someone has to step up and tell him to rest, enjoy life, heal, even watch over some older videos of Tiger, being Tiger.

Come back stronger and healthier, avoid all press, avoid contracts, play golf under the radar until he is capable of being Tiger Woods.

What annoys me is the constant lying about his condition. He says to everyone he is now pain free and feeling good then pulls out. Then says its just back spasms wish should result in one week off but now appears like he may not play again this season. Again!

If he just said that ''my back is iffy and I have tried to come back and it didn't work out so now I will rest for now and will try again in the near future and hope it goes better.'' That would be understandable.

But all this ''I am pain free for the first time in years, I feel good etc'' Why lie?? Its really annoying that he has said on a few different occasions that he is now injury free and then pulls out. Just stop lying!

I think he is only playing to maintain a commercial profile and as other say to keep his brand name out there (for now).

To me I think he knows his game is awful and so just cites injuries to avoid admitting he is just plain playing crap. Then takes time off to try to sort himself out. I think he is afraid of embarassing himself. Thats why he wont come back.

^^^^Trouble is, you're lucky if he is 60% of his worst.

At his tourney at the tail end of last year all of his fans were getting all excited that he had so many birdies. Totally glossing over the fact the only reason he didn't come DFL was because someone pulled out.

As above, time for a Seve-esque press conference.

Everyone kept talking about most birdies in the tournament when his birdie average in 2015 through chipping yips, 80s and everything else was 3.81, which would have been tied 44th on Tour if he qualified to count. In 2007, when he shot a 67 average per round, he was only getting slightly more birdies at 4.03.

So birdies weren't the problem and they're no good if you can't avoid bogeys, Tiger was top of the bogey avoidance stat in 2007, can't find a stat for him in 2015 but when your average score goes up by over four strokes per round, fair to say there are a lot more bogeys on the card.

I pulled his round history from 2014 onwards off the OWGR website earlier on ... not particularly pretty reading unfortunately ... relative to his own superlative standards anyway :)

He's averaged 72.1 from 68 rounds in 23 tournaments in that time period. To extrapolate upwards, this would equate to 17 shots worse (vs his 67.9 average of 2007) at the end of 4 rounds of a tournament.

Almost 50% of his events since 2014 have been a missed cut or withdrawal .... 11 out of 23 ...

Personally I hope he makes it back to being competitive, and if he could win an event at some point then that would be a great story ... good luck Tiger !

I think this whole Tiger saga has officially jumped the shark at this point... How can anyone take what he says to be truthful or meaningful? Pulls out because of back spasms, then has to sit out tournaments multiple weeks thereafter with no update other than he's going through treatments. I was optimistic about the comeback initially, and was really looking forward to seeing him play again. At this point, I just wish that media outlets would stop giving him the time of day and focus on Rory, Spieth, DJ, etc. The ones that are actually giving us something to talk about.

Are you talking about Freddie or Tiger? Couples just said in an interview after winning on the Champions Tour a few weeks ago he does not make a schedule. He just plays whenever the back cooperates. And never knows from day to day if it will feel good or lock up on him. If Tiger is going through something similar is that lying? Does he really owe any of us an explanation?

As to the bold you think the whole "surgery" thing is a fraud? He is not hurt just playing poorly and making excuses?

People watching Tiger in his prime witnessed the best golf ever played in the history of the game; is it so difficult to understand why people cling on to the hope of seeing it again? Love or hate the guy, it was special to anyone who understands golf.

Who knows? He isn't exactly lilly white when it comes to telling the truth. Ask his wife.

As for Freddie at least he can say his back is goosed and just tries to play whenever as opposed to Tiger telling everyone how good he feels and is pain free only to pull a sickie yet again. Its so boring and old at this stage. Tiger plays s*** then WD's. If its not his back its his ankle or neck or blah blah blah...

If it was just back spasms he would be fine now. So he is lying again. Just go away and retire Tiger.

I'm waiting for his big comeback at the Memorial . Wide fairways there. Plays poorly then pulls out of the US Open saying his back is bad. Its so predictable!

Too bad about this. I would like to see him play and be in contention. What I really want to see is him and the young guys battle it out. Like others have said, he can't sacrifice his ego to stay healthy. All the early comebacks from back surgery have taken a toll on his body.

Best of luck in 2018 Tiger, hopefully he is healthy.

Once again, no one knows what injuries were addressed in the surgeries. What he had done might work very well for a guy who wants to play some casual golf, live a normal life, but will not allow him to put in the work to play at the very highest level. No, he could not have won in 2000 with a 60% game, and he certainly can't 17 years later. If he's going to try a tournament, it should be Colonial. Not a hard course to walk, not super long, tailor made (no pun intended) for a reboot.
