In the past I have always played stiff flex iron shafts like the DG S300's, PX 6.0's etc...

I recently bought a set of the 2011 TM MC that came stock with some DG S300's.

I decided I wanted to try out the new Modus 3's so I bought one stiff 5 iron shaft to install before buying the whole set.

Going from a shaft weighing around 130 grams to one around 114 would take some getting used to.

I have a very smooth swing with an easy downswing transition. My 5 iron usually goes around 175 - 185 yds.

My initial thought process was that I would be able to increase my iron swing speed with the lighter shafts but after my 1st range session with the Modus in my 5 iron, I was still swinging with exact same tempo and now my shots were losing distance and I felt the shafts were not getting their full load. I determined that going to a lighter shaft while using the same tempo, I would actually need a slightly more flexible shaft ( the opposite of what I was expecting).

Since the Pro Modus3 was not available with a regular flex, i decided to "soft step" the shaft by installing the 5 iron shaft into the 6 iron and then butt trimming it to standard length. BINGO! I found the right formula for me. I was absolutely crushing my 6 iron on the range. My 6 iron was flying 180 - 185 yds and the softer tip made shots feel like butter. I felt i was able to increase distance while maintaining control. My shot dispersement was no worse than what it was before. I was a happy camper! I went and bought an entire set of Nippon N.S. Pro Modus 3's and "soft stepped" all of the irons. Meaning I installed the 2 iron shaft into the 3 iron, the 3 iron shaft into the 4 iron etc... One thing to note, when soft stepping these shafts, you loose about another 5 grams per shaft so these were now weighing around 109 -110 grams.

After playing my first several rounds with the full set, I am extremely happy with my distance and control and my iron confidence is much greater than its ever been. I love these shafts.

have you ever hit the ns pro 1150 shafts and can compare that to the modus3? or even the modus3 to a flighted rifle?

So how do the Modus 3 stiff softstepped compare to DG R300 with regard to shot dispersion, flight and length? I've a very smooth tempo and my swingspeed with a 6 iron fluctuates between 78-85. Obviously the lighter the shaft the more speed but I've always been happy to play a heavier regular shaft. I did try PX5.5 but found them a little harsh! Also tried KBS Tour regular but found them a little inconsistent compared to DG R300!

I play off a 7 handicap and I was considering putting the Modus 3 into a new set of Ping i-20 irons as Ping offer the shaft as a custom option. Unfortunately none of the local golf outlets have the Modus 3 in the Ping fitting cart so would be intrested in hearing your opinion.

Thanks

i have a set of APEX Blacks that I bought with these shafts....I had read the reviews from guys on here and thought I would love them. Exact opposite. hated them. They feel like are lagging behind me when I'm swinging. My shot shape is either straight or a draw, but yet all I do with these is hit blocks and slices. Not to mention, I lost about a clubs worth of distance. Again though, that's just me. SS with a driver is around 108, I don't know what my SS with a iron is, sorry.

that's weird,, cuz the 120's are supposed to be very tip stiff!!, but i hated the feel of the 120's!!! that's why i play the 130's

i sorta agree, i tried the 120's in a titleist cb head and when i looked to find the ball off the 7 iron demo , i couldn't find it, i had to look higher, then there the ball was!! haha.. that's why i'm sticking to the 130's..my driver ss is about yours and i like these shafts. in fact played the psi tours with them last year, and just got my 750 set with the same 130's today

play 105x in my 714 AP2's and love them. played the S300's for a while and the honeymoon wore off. started to not like the flight with them. tried the 105x on a monitor and really liked what i saw. much straighter ball and great through the wind for me. i like the lightweight also.

Iam looking for somefeed back on some shafts the nippon modues and the project x LZ i have the dynamic gold x tour issue i play off 18 thinking about her a different shafts any opinions would be great.

Played Project X LZ 6.0 last year and went to Nippon NS Pro Modus3 125X soft stepped this year. Both great shafts. Can probably play the 6.5, or regular X, but don't like the feel and also felt like I had to rip it to feel it load, which is fine in the fitting bay, but not so good on the course IMO. My driver SS is 105-110. Difference for me was the following: 1) much better feel and 2) stock trajectory lower but spin same and 3) resulted in avg 5 yard increased carry. Iron head was Mizuno MP-18SC. I had them pured, which gets WRXers crazy (please don't respond on this point, have already read it all), but really happy with the final product.

Also happy with Nippon 125 wedge shafts also. Will probably stay Nippon at this point.

Had the 120X’s put in my P750’s and hated them. Spun like nobodies business and I lost like 15-25 yards on every iron as they ballooned like crazy. Since moved to the $-Taper 130’s and love them.
