Golf Channel turning API into a funeral wake... ugh

I'm sorry guys

But sometimes hyperbole is acceptable

I used the ole hyperbole lingo in college. Didn't work out to well in my first marriage. My third wife thinks it's a definition for a groin pull.

Overdone and depressing?! There's this thing called a remote, change the channel if it's too much for you.

I've watched the last few days of coverage and it's been nothing but positive stories about a man who impacted so many on and off the golf course. I hate to break it to you but Arnold Palmer types rarely come around in life and after they pass they deserve our respect. What better time to pay tribute to AP than during the week of his own tournament? I also hope the young kids who are watching this week take note of the type of influence AP had on others and emulate it. I can't think of a better sports role model than him.

Kudos to GC for handling this in such a classy manner.

Totally with you guys. The single most influential person to ever hold a golf club dies and now, at his tournament for the first time without him, golf channel is acting like it's a big deal.

How ridiculous.

I'm all for placing the spotlight solely on AP this week (and any other week, for that matter - I love the man and what he did for the game). This game wouldn't be nearly what it is without him. However, the mood is very somber during the segments that I have seen so far. IMO, it should be more celebratory of the impact he had on the game and those around him. Maybe just my take, but I was curious why most are so somber - the man was one of the greatest and lived a great life. What a legacy!

I understand some of the dislike, but you have to remember what Mr. Palmer meant to this tournament, the Bay Hill area, the Orlando area as a whole and in particular The Golf Channel. If there was no Arnold Palmer, there would be no Golf Channel.

Mr. Palmer didn't just stamp his name on Bay Hill, he lived there and hung out there. Guests playing golf could come right up to him and get an autograph or a picture. He took a shack of a hospital and turned it into a world renowned children's hospital that has tremendously helped countless children and their families.

His presence in Orlando in itself turned the city into a major golf destination. And as far as the Bay Hill area, it's about the least snooty Tour stop you'll ever find. It's really a party atmosphere throughout the week with so many houses having cookouts with drinks, kids selling lemonade and candy and everybody having a good time. The course is great for spectators as it is easy to walk, there's a nice bleacher section behind the range (most Tour stops don't have that), and they allow for free on-course parking on Monday thru Wednesday. I'm certain that is exactly how Mr. Palmer wanted it. And let's not forget that when the tournament was going, Mr. Palmer would take a golf cart out each day and sign countless autographs for the people.

A lot of stuff has happened since Mr. Palmer's passing, but this week naturally serves as a reminder that our dearest friend in the game is gone and how badly we miss him already.

RH

Thank you.

Woods was not the reason why TGC was successful.

Arnie was out about 4 years after it started, in 1999, in terms of his investment. Tiger is probably the main reason he and a Gibbs got a good price at that time, and certainly the main reason it continued to grow if not survive since. Actually has had a very large increase in viewership since 2009. Thank Arnie for founding, and staying involved for a time, but Woods' success and impact on golf had way more to do with its continued existence and growth.

I have actually liked hearing players talk about the first time they met him or what they think he meant to the game, but see why some think it is overdone. I think once the golf starts today it will tone down and be more about the golf.

And everyone beat me to the statue comment. If I did not know that was supposed to be Mr. Palmer...I don't know that I would been able to tell who it was if someone showed me and asked. That grip is just jacked up!

I thought the most touching thing was one of the most simple. HIs bag and umbrella on the range in his favorite spot.

Arnie was special. As much for as what he did on the course as well as off. He had no affectations, no pretensions, which is rare when one becomes that famous.

I forget who the golfers were, but a couple of the best, and they were complaining about signing autographs. Arnie told them they didn't have to sign or do anything. That they could pack up their stuff and go home, however as long as they were on Tour, and reaping all the rewards therein, they had a responsibility, a duty to the fans. It's a part of the job.
