It's nonsense. He hits it pure, and compresses it very nicely, but there are dozens of others on tour who do exactly the same thing. It's just something that the commentators can fall back on when they have nothing else to say, and they do it time and time again.

Kind of like getting topspin, anyone spouting that nonsense should be instantly fired

Stenson's strikes do produce a unique sound. Very cool.

I remember Nick Price produced a very distinctive and unique sound back in the day with his irons as well.

I spent a lot of time watching players practice, at the Masters in 1995. Davis Love and Lee Jantzen were different sounds than most of the rest. Davis Love was extremely long, as well. Watching him practice, I wondered why he didn't,t win very ime he teed it up!

because he putts like bubba

lol ok. tied for 29th all time in wins.

It's a combination of multiple factors, as it usually is. Larger clubs + steep angle of attack + high clubhead speed + pure strike. Larger clubs mean more physical mass hitting the ground which combined with high speed and steep angle = bigger impact thump. Take away the steep AoA and he probably sounds like every other bigger hitter. Take away the larger clubhead and he probably still sounds similar just maybe a little less "thump". Take away the high clubhead speed and same thing, less thump.

Really it is all about the ground. The harder you're hitting the ground the more "powerful" the strike will sound as long as you're hitting it pretty flush. Look at a drum kit for example, almost always have the bass drum reinforcing a cymbal hit. Stick + cymbal = club + ball and the bass drum = turf.

He's playing chunkier irons than just about 90% of the guys on tour. They're louder.

He's not some monster.....I believe Jordan Spieth actually outranked him last year in driving distance.

Maybe so. 3 wood vs driver. Lol

They all hit three-woods from time to time. LOL.

Yes but Stenson hits his 3 wood probably 80-90% of the time on par 4's and 5's. As such the stat regarding Spieth out ranking him in driving distance doesn't really tell the whole story.

Your numbers are way off.

Henrik Stenson is an anomaly, and not just because he’s one of the best golfers on the planet. Of 225 pros who have appeared regularly in PGA Tour events in 2014 & 2015, Stenson has used something less than driver on his tee shots the 2nd most. Across the Tour, golfers use driver on approximately 72% of par 4/5 holes. For longer hitters the percentage falls to around 64% and for shorter hitters the percentage rises to around 81%. Stenson, however, uses driver only 33% of the time.

Last week I walked all 18 holes with him, inside the ropes on his final round, and he didn't pull the headcover off his driver. Thinking back now I actually think he hit his 5 wood more than he hit his 3 wood. He actually did not put a tee in the ground the entire day. I was most amazed at the height with which he hit these woods off the ground. It was definitely a cool experience, walking that close to a world class golfer and watching how they go about playing a course.

And what point would that be?

That he hits driver much less than someone like Jordan. Thus the driver stats are skewed.

Hell, just look at their club head speed #s. Speith isn't as long as stenson is. And it's not like JS is that short despite the common narrative.

Interesting thread. The difference in sound is something that top golfers and pros seem in tune with.

We have heard it about TW and other pros. And I remember a while back a golfwrx member named Sevam1 who gained huge attention and, I think, even a pro interested in working with him and the sound of his strikes was mentioned.

Here is what an accomplished Irish am had to say about Rory,

"But I could hear his ball striking, and I had never heard, and have still never heard to this day, anything like it. I’ll put it this way: The sound of his ball striking is amazing. It’s the sound of the whack that he makes. It’s crisp, clean and it is perfect. It is the same on every single shot he makes.” He then added, “If there were 20 players striking the ball, and you were blindfolded, you would unquestionably know the sound of Rory’s strike.”

And here is sevam1

Not sure if anyone heard the recent NLU podcast with Matt Every. When asked about other golfers' skills that standout, he discussed Stenson's ballstriking. He said the sound it makes when big Henrik hits the ball is like no other player.

I think Spieth said something similar when he was asked that question, that even pros love watching him irons on the range
