What do u give a friend who has everything under the Sun?

A very dear (and financially successful) friend who I introduced the game of golf to, loves the color ORANGE on all his golf apparels & has the spiffing latest technological superior golf gear to boot (akin to Apparel to Dazzle with a Game like a Boot) I on the other hand belong to the other end of the spectrum and am using old clubs pre 2nd -Millennium & favor golf attire with colors like patina brown, drab red, gloom blue, moody orange, morbid pink, "bling" green (aka fungus with bacteria that emit glow) and dirty yellow, which I alternate depending on my financial status at that particular point of tee off time.

Many years back, I bought my friend a SC Futura when it first came out (and I lived on stale bread for a month after that hefty price tag) . Since then, even though my friend has changed equipment the way we mere mortals change underwear, he has honored our friendship by sticking with the Futura.
My friend travels a lot on business trips and has multiple golf sets tucked away in a few cities, but he still travels and uses the same putter.

So.... what does one give a friend who has everything under the sun (except natural golf talent)? Short of selling blood and a kidney, I spoke to "LaMont, LaMann, LaGend" aLa MannKrafted around October last year. I purchased a beat up, run down, down and out (hey! that sounds like my bank account!) Futura Phantom from eBay and got LaMont to work his LaMagiK.
- the finish is a polymer finish that does not reflect the sun's glare (instead this puppy glares back at the sun!).
- the back line is silver ,
- the bottom has the names of his daughters.
I thank LaMont for his patience as he guided me thru the entire process.
I do hope my friend will like it.... as the MasterCard ad goes...

The funny part about the loudness of this color? It is the tame one of the last bunch to come out of Montie's House of Skittlez, LOL. The bench looked like Walt Disney stopped by and left his toys, LMAO!

This Futura was an absolute blast to take care of and I hope that the gentleman receiving it enjoys it, every day, as much as I enjoyed the work on it.

I think that is a fantastic gift. It's thoughtful, personal, appropriate, and shows that you are a great friend. Also, it sounds like your friend is the kind of person that will not think twice about buying any gear he wants, but would never stop long enough to put together something like this piece.

 

As far as the color goes, I also like the color orange, so I think it's the perfect gift for him. If he has a soul he will love it, and he will keep it forever. :friends:

 

Maybe I'll paint Frank orange before I leave for Pinehurst next month. :rolleyes:

I'm a skinflint, with a wallet that creaks like the intro to Michael Jackson's Thriller when it opens, so he'd be getting an i10 wedge and a couple of Burner Bubbles and be happy with them if it were me. I could even stretch to a Nubbins putter and some old Slazenger B52 golf balls too if the friend had donated a kidney or pulled me out of a burning car.

 

Nice thought on the Futura though. Although it looks disturbingly like my mates' Aga.

 

The fact you've clearly given the gift some thought and gone to more than a bit of effort in producing it would go a long way in my book.

that is probably one of the nicest putters ive seen!!! and i dont even like the look of the futura haha. but thats so cool that you would do this for a friend..

That is an awesome finish on that putter! Reminds me of one of the new Dodge Challenger muscle cars here in Austin that I see all of the time. Does he putt traditionally or a long putter?

Yar, I agree. I personally do not like the Futura much & the color orange is way too bling bling for a demented CPA like me. For some people, there really is "no accounting for taste" really, but i guess thats why he considers me a good friend :friends: hahaha. (or why my wife agreed to marry me for that matter)

But as some of the posters have nicely pointed out, its the thought that counts. I have always considered it "enduringly endearing" that he never "putter go round" even when he has a lot of other expensive and nicer ones given by business associates and sticks to the old Uglee Cow Poke that I gave him..

 

Jebb, It sure will be a talking point , but I hope it more positive than negative. I can already hear ppl saying " Here comes the Orange Crusher " (an extension of the comparisons of the Futura to a potato masher).. "Got Juice?", " hey put a watch on it and call it Clockwork Orange",

Breck, I laughed at the comparisons of a Dodge Muscle car. we should stamp a "number plate on". Btw. . he uses a traditional putter but there is nothing traditional about it. Like the Silverback Gorilla mimicking in mating season, thats the pre-routine. (nah i am just taking the monkey out of him). He putts Baddeley ( thats Agonizingly and not Aaron)

 

Flat sticks are so personal. I have enjoyed Golfwrx and how customization has evolved,, and the creativity of these artistic expressions have evolved over the past year and a half (and the options available) . My favourites have been the ones that link a concept to a relationship. Two particularly stand out in my mind, there was a C&L dedicated to a newborn daughter & Deerslayer and his son Stratton. These are all so heart warming especailly to me as I am a new father to an equally new son. Pardon the rant.. moment of weakness.. hahaha. The process of having LaMont work thru this with me painstakingly was also heartwarming esp his kindness and patience, who made the process " idiot proof " for newbies like yours truly.
