A chip- anyone who has seen the location knows that the spot we was hitting to was super elevated. The low traj is an illusion. Make it level, ball is up in the air big time. Believe me.

It's a chip, obviously. Commentators' bastardisation of the English language and golf terminology in general needs to stop. Pin. Cup. Etcetera.

Fwiw, I use chip for anything around the green and pitch for the 10-50 yard range.

I have a friend who loves to correct me at every turn. Today it was regarding Tiger's birdie shot on 16th at the 2005 Masters.

 

I said he chipped it and he made a big deal about how it was a pitch. I argued that it was a chip since it had a low trajectory and it carried 1/3 and rolled 2/3 of the way. His argument was that most of the roll was due to the downslope so technically it's a pitch. It's an immature argument but can you guys tell us who's right?

 

Also, does anyone know which club Tiger used on that shot? We both didn't know :P

Pitch. He used his full swing grip. He used lots of wrist. He used a high lofted club. He did put it a little back in the stance and hit it a little lower, but it was 100% pitch. No, it wasn't a flop. Nor was it a chip...

To some the definition is if the clubhead passes the hands it's a pitch.

 

This is how I understood it. For a chip shot the club stays low to the ground. For a pitch, the club head passes the hands and goes higher.

This is a little too vague, albeit in the right path. If pitching and the club sticks in the turf, it doesn't just become a chip. And like a bunker shot, a pitch shot need not have a wrist release...

It's a fun debate! And it goes along with the where golf is going. Of course it was a pitch, but it is perfectly acceptable to call it a chip these days. Like a blade putter, an 8802 is a blade, not a Ping Anser. Yet all Anser style putters are called blades these days...

You're both right, it is a very immature argument (and appears this the right place for immature arguments). But seriously, in my double digit hacker opinion it was definitely a chip (but my short game sucks so what would I know?).

Just my opinion and I'm sticking with it.

 

I dunno, most of my chips roll very little, maybe 5/6th's flight 1/6th roll. But I get the jist of what you're saying, and agree somewhat.
