biggest marketing flaw in golf?

Why is it that Odyssey has yet to release a insert-less #9? It just doesn't make sense to me that such a popular and effective head design hasn't been expanded away from Odyssey's mushy inserts. Is it just me or do you all think that if Odyssey made a milled #9 with a nice finish that it would be a biggest hit on the putter market? I have yet to find a head that's as appealing as the XG #9 or as effective for me, but I really don't love the mushy insert that the XG and other Odyssey lines carry. Heck, if they made a #9 style head with the same quality as their Prototype #1 I'd cough up a good amount of cash, and I'm sure other golfers would too. So what's the deal with Odyssey?

I was surprised when they released the black series #9 with an insert. I too would pony up the cash if they made a completely milled version. I do think it was mistake, but they are known for their inserts.

I feel this is the story with all putters in the oddessy stable, amazing head designs terrible inserts. I wish oddessy would go back with what they did with the 1st generation Black Series, which was milled 303ss

I would definitely buy one if it had a milled tungsten insert like the Black series but Callaway makes some stupid decisions sometimes. They should release it like all the other putters; same design different insert.

I would say that the Prototype #1 hasn't went over extremely well, and they don't want to expand it even more...

I think many of us would agree with this sentiment, but it seems that Odyssey's success has been with inserts. I get the impression that their Black Series (non-insert) didn't sell extremely well...might explain why they released their Black Series i models with an insert.

Milled Tungsten insert?? I didn't think the face on the Black Series had an "insert". It's milled Carbon Steel and I had thought that the area on the face is just a different milling pattern. The tungsten is attached on the flange with screws.

I'd have to agree with the OP!!!

 

Being an Odyseey user for about oh....15 years, I just switched to a SC after swearing I would never travel to the dark side. :black eye: The reason? The inserts...Now, don't get me wrong I loved the insert tech that started with the stronomic and now the white hot etc. But, what Odyssey does or doesn't understand is that over time the insert changes firmness and feel due to temp changes and the natural aging of the polymer. I'm not a club ho! So I dont really have the $$$ or the desire to anty up for a new putter every two years and plus during the course of the season the inserts nature changes providing no consistent feel. Milled putter however offer a more consistent life span...thus the reason I switched. I just wasnt comfortable anymore knowing that I had to adjust my game to a changing putter...sure it might have been subtle but I could notice the differences.

 

The #9 head shape = M O N E Y

Odyssey has missed the boat by not producing a Milled version. Personally I know that they've lost a cool $250.00 from me.

I really think that they keep selling putters because people like the feel of the insert. I think to many of you are used to the clicky sound of the non insert putter and it is not even a feel issue. The black series putters with insert do not feel as soft as some of the 1st inserts released. The only thing I would say is release the Number 9 with a DFX insert which I thought has the best feel of them all.

Non of the Black Series putters have been milled 303ss. They have always been milled carbon steel.

oh from what i understood it was a tungsten insert as well.Ill have to check that.

 

Edit: i guess your right. The face seems to just have a different milling pattern.
