DJ doesn't wear a seat belt

Around the year 2000 the motorcycle helmet law was abolished here in Florida.

In the 12 months following the change the death toll from motorcycle incident head injuries went up significantly.

One young man, 19, laid his bike down in I-4 about 6 months ago or so. He was wearing jeans that padded his lower extremities well and from the neck down he had fairly insignificant injuries. But he wasn't wearing a helmet and the side of his head slammed down onto the asphalt. He was actively seizing when our first unit arrived. They administered paralytics and took over his airway and I called the helicopter in. He survived. But he cannot speak and is wheelchair bound. He cannot feed himself nor can he control his bodily functions. The Neurologist offer little hope of improvements because of the extent of the bleeding inside his skull and the amount of brain damage that resulted.

All preventable. A helmet would have probably prevented any TBI.

I don't feel sorry for him nearly as much as I do his parents. They actually came by the station to meet and thank the crew who aided their son. The mom said they are taking it day-by-day. As a Dad I can't imagine that sort of pain seeing my child incapacitated like that.

Please fellow golf lovers on here - understand something. I am NOT trying to dictate that anyone wear a helmet or a belt. I am just stating the facts - wear them and you are safer. Don't and you are not. As an icon admired worldwide for his golf skills and talents DJ should be aware that every example he sets, on and off of the course, may be imitated.

It always amazes me to see states that require seat belts, and don't require helmets.

Exactly what I thought at the time. Makes zero sense.

HighSpeed - I am with you 1000%. Used to ride a motorcycle but way too many cars on the road now and here in Florida they just don't pay attention as they should. One of my co-workers, who rides all of the time, says there are two kinds of bikers. Those who have crashed and those who are going to. This was after his own near death experience when a woman cut him off and he ended up with fractures of both his tibia and fibula. Months of rehab later he was back at work - and back on his bike. He does wear a helmet at least. But NO WAY would I ever ride one again. Cut off too many times and decided I like a/c in my car too much. : )

Seatbelt is overrated. Ask an urologist.

The pinch of that belt destroys the bladder in a long term... facts

How tight exactly, do you wear your seatbelt anyway?

I'm pretty sure most men wear their pants belts tighter.....

But that would mean that belts themselves are bad for the bladder! With those stats, it won't be long before the PC community bans the wearing of belts. But not seat belts. Seat belts may destroy the bladder but they save lives. So we can die of bladder cancer instead of that head on that is just around the next bend.......

He doesn't speak like the sharpest knife in the drawer but I really don't see how you get to number one in any endeavor without having above average intelligence.

Therefore, I think his brain is much sharper than his tongue.

Probably a strength is my own game is any measure. Cannot count the number of times the 6 inches between my ears got involved in a shot and screwed things up.

I wish everyone wore them, but I have to admit I really dislike the choice being legislated away. Dangerous territory this thread is going...

Regarding helmets - saw a guy's brains after a motorcycle accident on Lakeshore Drive years ago - happened right in front of me and I was first one there. Brains, and watching a guy die, swore me off motorcycles.

That's what helmets are for. To keep us from seeing stuff like that.........

What did Phil tell Feherty? Something along the lines of you have to be really smart or really dumb to be a professional golfer.

All depends where you are on the money list, I guess.
