PGA tour schedule to crowded

Hey all: I read an article the other day about why five top players chose to skip the wgc-match play event. The two big reasons given were the match play isn't a good tune up for the first major a few weeks later and to many big events in a row you can't play them all and expect to be or stay mentally sharp. Weather those are legit reasons for skipping the match play is debatable. Just look at the events like the ToC WGC-match play that used to be must play are now not so important to some. So in the end the schedule is what it is and the fans will just have to deal with how and when the best players choose to play. Thoughts and thanks :D

Top players not playing in a particular field or tournament only opens it up for those trying to move up the food chain.

Love to see the Spieths/Days/McIlroys/etc teeing it up as much as possible...but, since they are independent contractors, within reason, they are free to pick and choose their schedule to whatever they think best fits them.

Kind of inevitable, as we see more and more of these so-called elite field events.

The pinnacle of the game is the majors and the players, but its getting increasingly crowded below that.

4 WGCs, the CIMB, the new event in South Korea, the Fedex Playoffs, the Rolex Series, Memorial and Bay Hill... pretty tough to play all of them, so guys are going to have to start making choices

With the size of the purses and endorsements now players can more liberally choose the events they want to enter and stay rested for what they perceive as the most important tourneys. I don't mind some events when "big names" sit out because its always interesting to see some of the journeymen vying for a huge victory for them.

As a golf spectator ... I really do not care if the top players skip certain tournaments. I record all the tournaments. If there is someone interesting teeing it up ... then I'll watch. If not .... deleted. Having extra tournaments gives the journeyman players more chances .... which is good. The top players cannot be expected to play every week.

I was looking at this the other day, coincidentally.

http://www.espn.com/golf/statistics/_/year/2016/sort/tournamentsPlayed

A few guys play 30+ a year, I'd guess to make as much dough as possible. Reed plays a lot in comparison to other guys in the top 10.

If it was me, and I was an established tour pro, worth tens of millions of dollars, I'd only want to be working part-time as well.

Said it before, you'd get better fields throughout the year if you got rid of the Fed Ex playoffs. Not that the fields heading into the Masters are bad or anything, far from it. But if you're an elite pro, why would you kill yourself playing every week this time of year when you have:

WGC Bridgestone

PGA Champs

4 Fed Ex events

And every two years if you're US or Euro, the Ryder Cup in August and September

Potentially 7 events in the space of two months so potentially a third of your schedule. You've a major, ranking points and a hell of a lot of money to play for so it's a lucrative time to peak.

Take away the Fed Ex Cup and it's not so concentrated and maybe the top players play 4-5 events then and 2-3 events elsewhere across the year.

Don't think its the crowded schedule or the Match Play, its the golf course. Austin CC could hardly be more of an anti-Augusta with how firm they maintain it
