100-105 Swing Speed Distance

Recommended Posts

According to flightscope optimizer, those numbers give a carry of 253, and a total of 281 on hard fairways.

I just hit the ball major, I didn't say how far it went. I left that up to my skytrack. remember spin rate is a huge contributer to distance... You hit a knuckle ball, it will get out there. 2024rpm with -29 side spin. That's where the distance on that particular drive came from. Also it was only 280 carry.

barracuda,

Looked it up.. Your right.. Still... That's a bomb for a slower swing speed. A lot of these guys are talking about just SS and distance. Take flight scope and add another 2000rpm spin to that same shot. You lose 25 yards in total distance just like that. Its all about ball striking. who cares how far it goes. lets say a guy hits it 300 yards then misses a 4' putt; another guy hits 2-150yd shots and makes his 4' putt: same score..

Yes, numbers do look great. I have similar numbers but my ball speed averages 155 with some bombs going up to 163mph, and never hit one over 280 carry. My longest drive of the year according to game golf is 314 total.

Skytrack Is awesome, but on high launch, low spin drives, it can overestimate your distance.

That's awesome... I'm totally going to look at ball speed a lot more and cross reference that to flight scope.. I had never seen that before.. Flight scope optimizer is awesome thanks for inadvertently sharing that...

I don't care what your smash factor and spin rate is, a ss of 100-105 is not going to give you a 280-290 carry. All things being perfect, it would still be impossible.

Kinda what I was thinking. Mine is 102 area and I've never seen the kinds of #s people here are speaking if, especially 290-300. Must be an awesome seeing groove.

I used to register 105 on all the monitors. My carry was always 235-240 and a total distance on 260-270. This was somewhat proven when I would play my local course with really soft, slow fairways and I NEVER got it past 240. Then I would go to a more normal course and average 260.

I saw a chart once that said the average 105 swinger was carrying it 240.

That sounds more reasonable than some of these other numbers. Im generally around 110/112 on trackman and Im usually around 27-285 total distance, sometimes Ill get a hold of one and get it to roll out there to 300. I am not the best ball striker so that might be part of it, but hearing guys on here with ~105 SS claiming to carry 280 is a little nuts.

Mostly PING clubs, with TaylorMade woods.

Usually swing speed x 2.5 equals carry distance or very close to it.

I haven't checked on a analyzer in 4-5 years due to ongoing heath issues, last was a Callaway sponsored club trial event, so 110 = 283 according to their analyzer. I'm usually 260 off the tee back then, but I'm usually 220 - 230 total off the tee now. In the North West, that's either plugged or 2 yards bounce back off the turf. But the chart above looks right, I'm probably 92 - 96 right now, and my current 150 club is between a 6 iron and a 7 iron (old specs, 33* - 37*), depending on the overall conditions.

Interesting discussion here...all things being constant, ball speed and spin rate are the variables that affect distance the most. Mid to upper 170's ball speed with a spin rate of 2000 should carry the ball about 320 and total of 345-350. Using same percentages a 105 swingspeed should potentially carry the ball 270 with a smash factor of 1.45 and optimum spin.

a 105 swing speed with a smash factor of 1.48 gets you 155 for ball speed. Optimum spin of 3000 with a launch angle of 17 degrees gets you 261 yards for carry at sea level. At least that's the best I can do with that flightscope optimizer link.

Optimum spin of 3000 and 17 degree launch is very high. I have a hard time believing that is optimal on that flightscope thing.

I re ran - 2000 is optimum. I have edited my original post.

1800rpm at 17deg according to TM I think.

Pretty sure I can carry it with my 102 average SS 280 on a 30 foot drop elevation change down wind down slope fairway. LOL. I get a decent smash from 1.47 to 1.50 ideally (tend to toe it), and usually can carry it 250 when i strike it well. I'm not that good at striking my driver but it's become fairly straight and reliable. To carry 280 you need tour speeds like 110-115 average. No guy will have a 10 mph difference from trying to hammer it on a radar setup vs on course. I usually hit it with less force on the course which is why it's 102. Max I can get 108-110 but that's not always with good results in the process of trying to get there lol.

Want to carry it 280? I'd suggest not inflating your numbers but inflating your swing speed another 10-12 mph. Otherwise can see some balls landing in the water or trees when you should have been able to carry it lol.

I'd have to agree with this. My swingspeed is in the 102-105 range and my total distance (carry +roll) tops out at 275 and is more commonly right around 260-265 and I have a good consistent repeatable swing.

I was at golftown yesterday trying an x shaft, and on the foresight it said 155 mph ballspeed, smash factor set at 1.45, so SS around 105-106, and carry ranging from 255 to 278.

I think i never went over 155 mph at golftown in all the times i tried clubs.

GPS verified i hit multiple 300 yards per round normally, sea level, about 15-20 yards roll no wind, so numbers don't add up.

Maybe i just try to kill it too much in the screen and i lose club head speed ahah

Doesn't make sense, I'm also always 105 on all simulator and IRL on slow fairways i can drive 300 multiple times per round when well struck ahah.

I'd say i carry probably 275-280 on perfect drives but on the optimizer at 105 best carry i got was 266

Just spent two hours on a launch monitor today. Calibrated for sea level.

Hit over 80 balls for a iron fitting. Hit the last 5 balls with a G400 LST @45" SS averaged 105 with carry showing 255-260 IIRC. Makes sense because I'm getting a boost at my home course being at 5000' and I'm dropping them right at the bottom of the fence at 275 with no wind.

Kinda surprised I'm still swinging like that at my age. And I was tired to boot. And altitude is a wonderful thing for us retired guys. :)

Down here at the coast (sea-level), my SS is Trackman'd at 103-105, and my carry is 242-248. The biggest one I've ever seen is 255 carry. Those numbers are dead on with what I see on the course.

Funny, in the same store, if I go over to their Foresight monitor, it gives me 102-103 SS and 225-228 carry. I asked one of the workers about it, got a shrug of the shoulders and an "I dunno?".

I'm age 54, and those numbers are definitely going down. I need to move to higher elevation.

103-106 avg. 255 carry on good strikes. A lot of 238-245's due to strike locations and the occasional 265 carry. This is on flat terrain. In the mountains w elevation uphill downhill I've carried 290ish. But in the end SS of 105ish you're limited to that 240-260 range on avg with that speed outside on a course ( talking only carry, no roll). Monitors I've avg 265-275 many times.

Another good way to figure it is w your range finder. Hit your carry distance and divide by 2.4 to find your avg SS. If anyone tells you there carrying 280+ then they're most likely a 115+ SS most of the time....like 99%

Thank you. Finally, a dose of reality.

This is from a Trackman session in 2006. With a clubhead speed of 104 with a 1.48 smash factor, I got a 255 carry.

Anyone who says they have a 105mph swing speed and can carry 280-290 is living in fantasyland.

For most of his young golf life JP struggled with too much driver spin. Before the advent of all this club &shaft variability, JPs recourse was to just swing less aggressively, to play at 80% off the tee. It led to problems of trying to steer the ball, of seldom being able to unload, and generally having to hit it less far than he could so he could find the fairway. There was a whole circus associated with the tee shot. This was all well before monitors, decent graphite shafts, and video assistance. The advent of low spin drivers and shafts has really been a godsend to JP. He drives the ball further today that at any time in his life. To now be able to tee it up and go for it without too much anxiety has been just a totally wonderful thing. He assumes his Swing speed is around 105+ given his distances. One in two, three rounds he may nut one 300+ total. This is in the summer when it’s warmèr and firmer. Depending on the weather, He’s normally 250-265 and in the fairway these days.

280 carry is not happening with JP

I think I got this chart from this site a few years ago and thought it was realistic and helpful.

I have a 100 mph SS, and those yardages are spot on.

Recently tested out the new drivers at Golf Mart. Was pleasantly surprised to see my swing speed up quite a bit from last year when I was swinging at 100mph. BTW had the best results with the Cobra F9.

With my current driver:

Average Swing Speed : 105.5mph

Average Carry Distance : 258yd

Average Total Distance : 279yd

With the Cobra F9:

Average Swing Speed : 107.7mph

Average Carry Distance : 267yd

Average Total Distance : 299yd

I dont know how far I carry it (dont use monitors) but know I am 100-105 SS and drive ball 270-300 on good hits....our fwys are prolly bit on firmer side

I get ALOT of roll, I hit very penetrating mid flight draw....so maybe 230-250 carry and ball runs like a gazelle running from lion, lol

If I dont hit it well it's about 240-260....I can be inconsistent at times

Looking to help out a buddy of mine...

2017 M1 with Hzrdus Yellow 6.0 turned down to 9.0 Degrees. Ball flight looked spinny to me so he went for a "fitting" and came back with SS 100mph, 260 yds at 2300 rpm. I wasn't there so I don't have all the data. Smooth transition, 12 hcp, plays 3-4 times per month. Sales guy put him in a stock m5 stiff (not sure what shaft) and he was out to 270. Looking to get his spin down in his M1 with just a new shaft.

Was thinking Evenflow Black 6.0? Any other suggestions/experience out there?

2300 spin is perfect. 100 mph carrying 260 is pretty much perfect. Never go off of total distance on a launch monitor. Only carry.
