Members' Choice: What Are The Best Players Irons of 2017?

Recommended Posts

I hit many of these this year, and the ones that stood out for me were the MP-5's, MP-25's and Titleist 716CB's. I will likely pick up one of those sets later this year, but want to hit the Callaway Apex Pro's since they have received some good attention before I do so. I also want to try the Wilson irons.

Cobra LTDx LS - Oban Kiyoshi HB-65
Cobra F8 4w - Tour AD IZ-7s
Cobra 4h - SmacWrap 780 ES x
Cobra Forged Tec Black - AMT x100

The Ping i200, is in the bag of Ping staffers and non staffers on the PGA, LPGA and other tours. The buzz that these irons have created on WRX is noteworthy, in my opinion it is a mistake to overlook the playability of this iron. If the AP2 is being considered the i200 should be given consideration as well.

I've had my 716 AP2's for a couple months now. The forgiveness is absolutely noticeable and I'm sure I'll have them for a long time.

Mizuno MP5 - excellent feel, pretty as they come, it's a Mizuno

JPX 900 Tour - love the finish, feel is excellent as well however slightly different from the mp5. I got more distance with the mp5 on pure strikes but the JPX has more forgiveness it seems.

Apex MB's - this is based on an older model but they are also great

The Titleist 716CB hands down the best irons I have ever played. Great feel, really workable and they look good. I will always have a soft spot for a Mizuno blade but I won't be giving up my CB's any time soon.

I've tested a ton of irons recently. Full sets of clubs, not just a demo iron.

Iron Model 1 - Titleist 716 AP2 - I haven't been able to knock these out of the bag. I like how they look and feel, but there are plenty of sets that look better, feel better, go longer, etc. But nothing has been as consistent and forgiving. I've tested super forgiving sets like the cf 16, but I much preferred the Apex Pro 16 to the cf 16.

Iron Model 2 - Callaway Apex Pro 16 - These are a fairly close second to the ap2. These look great from address, and I've found them to be as soft as anything else I've tried. They are surprisingly forgiving for a players cb. But, the ap2 were a bit more helpful on mishits. That being said, I've had some of my best rounds with these, when my iron game is on.

Iron Model 3 - Srixon z 745/765 - z 945/96t - Srixon had produced some great irons lately. They look incredible, they are soft, they are forgiving, and they are very affordable. I would have no problem recommending the z565, z765, or z965 to just about any skill level golfer. The only group that likely wouldn't like them is the small blade group. The z965 are great, but they are a bit big for a blade.

Stealth 2+ 10.5 - Ventus Black 6X

Cobra Aerojet LS 14.5 - Kaili Blue 70 TX
PXG 0311X Gen 4 - Ventus HB 10TX

PXG 0311P Gen 3- 4 iron - HZRDUS Red 105 X
PXG 0311P Gen 3 - 5 to PW - Nippon 125 X
Vokey SM9 Raw - 50F

Vokey SM9 Raw - 54S

Vokey Raw - 60K Low Bounce

Missing the Hogan Ft. Worth irons in the list - they are true Apex Irons, not like the Callaway "Apex"!

Still miss the good old Cobra MBs - but had the great luck to fall over an unused set from GB - and got it at a great price - 3-PW.

I am a blade iron person - that was all you could get, when I learned golf - 53 years ago - so for me, Miuras are beautiful, but I never had the

opportunity to test them - they are scarse here in Scandinavia.

I really like Titleist MBs, but are somewhat dissappointed with the AP2s I had. They neither look, nor feel a player's iron.

Mizuno MP-5s: These are in the bag for both looks and performance. An upgrade from my previous gamers the 69s

Mizuno JPX-900 Tours: These would've been my second choice but for availability, performance and pricing I went with the 5s

Callaway Apex MBs: If I were looking outside of Mizuno these would've been serious contenders but given that I wanted a new set at th beginning of the season and availability it wasn't meant to be

MP-5 - Ridiculous feel and performance. Not a huge fan of the PW but a wedge replacement solves that. Silly long and easy to hit. Almost like cheating.

Apex Pro 16 - Feel and performance are crazy good. Not a huge fan of the badging but I love the feel.

JPX 900 Tour - Love the looks and goes well with my T5 wedges but I don't think they are as soft as everyone says. Wanted to keep them in the bag but they just don't feel like the classic mizuno feel I'm used to.

Honorable mention J15mb - Easy to launch, so super soft, and love the DG Pro stock set up.

Tried quite a few of these this year. Went for 1. Z765, 2. iBlade and 3. 716 CB.

Sure the 900 Tours perform well, but the finish puts me off. Really not my cup of tea at all. Didn't care for 900 forged either.

Callaway performed okay, but not feeling the cavity design.

Ping i200 were decent, but seemed cheap compared to iBlade.

Actually purchased Z765. Great blend of size, shape, looks, performance and value. Feel is superb...

Agree. AP2 is way chunkier and GI looking than i200.
