The surprising Callaway Fusion driver

Recommended Posts

The stock Fusion shaft is the Recoil 450. I have tried it in an Epic. It felt too light for me, and on the launch monitor spin was a lot higher than I prefer. Mind you, for me the Epic head spins more than the Fusion.

Mine came with the Recoil 450 , didn't like it at all ..weak, high torque and spin. unless you have a super smooth slow swing. I have the

Rogue silver in it now results are gold.

I hit it at Carls Golfland in Plymouth and the range is really strange. Artificial turf and weird humps and bumps which prohibits you from actually seeing how far the ball goes. I loved the ball flight and direction (nice draw) but it felt short. I have a pretty quick swing (a constant in my life) and it just didn't "feel right". I guess I will need to schedule a fitting at some point and do it right. I was intrigued by the shorter shaft and found my consistency improving. Just need to find the right combo.

I play the Fusion at 45.5 inches and the accuracy and distance is outstanding . I do not believe a shorter shaft would benefit me at all.

Honestly I have struggled with my driving in the last few years , two way miss. I have so much confidence to hit it on the tightest

of fairways . I think shaft fit is key , it's not magic but it is simply the most forgiving driver I have played and I have played so so many.

Anyone playing the fairway wood? Very mixed reviews online.

I demoed the Fusion fairway it is Uber forgiving and silly easy to hit a 3 wood off the deck . High ball flight, It does spin a lot as a result it is a bit short but it did have the Recoil shaft it which I really don't care for maybe a better a better shaft who knows .

I found the regular Epic just about as easy to hit and 10 to 15 yards longer carry and better run out.

I'm still trying to get along with mine. I have the 12g weight playing at 44.5" with a fubuki 60g shaft, and I mine was lacking significantly in distance behind my Mizuno JPX EZ set at same loft, same 44.5" length, with a slightly heavier Fubuki shaft.

I have the 45.5" shaft and 5g weight if you want to give that a try.

I have the 3 wood and 7 wood and they are exactly like their driver counterparts. Hot and straight. Now, my normal miss is a push right but I don't have that with these. Just nice soft draws. I think some people's mileage may vary as I could see it setting up closed depending on how you address the ball.

Regarding the weight and shaft length, that will affect the swingweight but shouldn't affect the overall performance all that much.

Your particular swing will make a much bigger difference, and whether the shorter shaft helps you middle the ball.

I actually have the 12g weight in my head, but am experimenting at 45 inches with both a heavier shaft (Hzrdus Black) which should increase the swingweight to D6 or so, and a heavier counterbalanced shaft (Hzrdus Yellow), which should be about the same as the original, albeit heavier overall.

There are differences in feel, but not the objective numbers like launch and spin are about what I'd expect from those shafts, albeit much better than I expected with them in the Fusion.

What I am finding is that the head seems really sensitive to changes in face angle from adjusting loft and lie.

It may be psychological, but whenever I set it at +1 (which closes the face), the ball starts going left

I had similar results with the GBB and the Epic so I suspect, for me, that the Optifit hosel isn't as innocent regarding face angle as some make out.

Play it 45.25 with the 5g weight

Coming from the V series and have tired every driver out there to outmatch it

GBB was a hook machine, XR-16 felt a little light and draw biased, Epic was long, but dispersion wasn't as tight as desired

This thing is the best of both worlds - Long as anything i have hit and Just wants to go Straight!

Hitting fairways is my #1 focus going forward - i have found my elixir

Hit the Fusion today for the first time (with a HZRDUS T800 6.0, which is too soft for me), and the verdict is...

It's pretty damn awesome.

I was shocked. Out of the Epic, Epic SZ, Fusion, TM AeroBurner TP, and 2017 M2, I got the best average ball speeds with the Fusion, but that's not what impressed me. I loved the launch and, more particularly, the way the club head mass feels during the backswing and in transition. The ball wants to go where you point the club, and it produced (for me, at least) a mid-high, penetrating flight with a tendency for "stable" draw spin (as opposed to tumbling draw spin).

One of the problems I've had with modern era "frying pan" drivers is that I tend to leave the club face wide open on otherwise-good swings, resulting in some serious bombs about 40 yards right of my target. The head shape of the Fusion really resists this type of motion, and I think for some guys, this club will nearly eliminate both the push-block-bomb miss and the wipey flare.

I will almost certainly pick one of these up when the price point gets around ~$200 on the BST. The only bummer is there's no stock x-flex setup, and that will limit aftermarket options for guys like me.

I suspect I am way less in terms of swing speed, but it is good to know you nippy guys get similar results. I ended up selling my Fusion because I felt the LTD was a bit straighter and then I drunkenly bought the cool black head and had to pay for it, but I remain very impressed.

My last round with it I smashed a couple of drives so straight and long that I was ready to pull out of the sale. I actually bailed on one hole that needs a 240 yard carry only to fly it rather longer than that through the chicken line.

I convinced myself I had actually hit the LTD to similar distances in the past, but I'm not sure.

It was certainly better for me than the Epic.

I am a UK golfer using the fusion

I custom ordered mine 44.5" with a tour ad di7x and have been in love with it since having it.

I have consistently driven over 300 yards with it since having it and compared it to the following:

Tour issue 2017 m1 with tp7x

Gbb epic with bb6x

Cobra king f6+ with elements chrome 7f5

I don't fit the demographic of the club, I'm a low hcp golfer with a driver ss of 123-125 but I love it.

I was actually recommended the driver and set up by a UK +3 hcp golfer who said it was the best feeling combo he'd ever hit and couldn't miss a fairway with it.

I have to agree, it's stood the test and I've hit a few over 350 so far this season (and that's in a country where it hasn't gotten over about 10 deg C (55F)

I cracked the shaft a week ago and callaway had a look and sent me a brand new di7x so that was nice :)

I recently picked up a lightly used BB Fusion driver, with the 12g weight and stock Recoil ES 44.5" shaft. I had a couple of other shafts around from the GBB and XR16, and settled on the Kuro Kage black 50 stiff. I took the BB Fusion out for a round yesterday, and it is a very interesting driver. This was a real round, so no launch monitor stats or anything like that.

The BB Fusion is definitely low spin, as I needed to first bump it up to +1, and eventually +2 to get optimal loft on the drives. I would also call it fade-biased. This is in direct contrast to the GBB, which I found draw-biased. In addition to the +2 loft, I needed to go to the D setting to get more draw bias. Even at +2/D, I was still hitting fades, but they were controlled fades and really got out there. This is where that draw/fade slider on the GBB might be perfect on the Fusion to dial it in a bit better, but I think I can work with the fade bias rather than hitting useless hooks time and again. IMHO, you can really go after it with the Fusion without fear of hooking the ball into oblivion.

In any case, I can't say that the BB Fusion is going right into my bag, but it will definitely get a look. It definitely has potential, but I might try a different shaft or two. YMMV.

I ended up picking up a Fusion 9* head only on the Bay to try out since I already have the Epic and have a couple of shafts with Callaway tips. I got to give it a try this weekend at the driving range with a few shafts and then on the course for a round. I can definitely say this head is a lower launch and very low spin head. I must also mention it is probably the straightest driver I've hit in a long while and in the neutral setting the head sits a little open although very upright.

I first tried it with the Rogue Max 65 that came in my Epic and found the flight to be a little too low. I was hitting nothing but low/mid flight, dead straight bullets. I added a degree of loft which helped get the flight up but it closed the face and I didn't like the look. With the triangular head shape the face angle seems to be more obvious than a round head, or at least it was to my eye.

I also have a Project X LZ 60 shaft with a Callaway tip and threw that in next. This shaft brought the launch up to what I'm used to seeing and appeared to increase the carry distance. I was able to keep the hosel set at standard/neutral which kept the face from looking closed. This is the shaft I left in while I played my round.

As I mentioned earlier this club is insanely straight. When I got it out on the course and hit shots using real balls I was amazed at how little the ball curved. I put some less than average swings on a few shots and fully expected to be in trouble but looked up to see the ball only moving to the edges of the fairways. I actually found the Fusion to have more fade bias than I expected. I assumed when this club came out it would be a draw biased head but it seems to be weighted very neutral. I've always had a harder time turning over clubheads that were more pancake shaped so that probably also was a factor.

Last thing I want to mention is the sound and feel which I personally really enjoyed. It is heavy on the carbon fiber but it didn't sound dead. It had a slightly muted but still noticable "thwack" or "crack" sound. It's different than the Epic's sound which is more of a "pop" or "pock" sound and feels softer off the face than the Epic as well.

Yes I have found the Fusion low spinning as well. I have a 10.5 launched is lowish to mid and as you say I don't like the look when I add loft , looks closed and can produce hooks . I have the Rogue silver 60 in it now and was thinking of buying a Aldila Tour Red to increase the launch and spin .

I've tried going the EPIC route but am back to the Fusion. It feels as nice as the SZ but has just a tad more spin (similar or slightly less than the EPIC for me). What I like most is the accuracy. My club's fairways are narrow with OB/Red Stakes on both sides and I need fairways to score (especially with the spring growing season making the rough extra penal). I prefer the looks and shape of the EPIC's but I must relegate myself to the Fusion class of players out there. BTW, Matrix Ozik Red Tie in mine. Great combo with this head for me negative AoA.

I guess all the people reading this thread has driven the price up! I haven't seen anything remotely that cheap on the bay for the last 3-4 days. I am playing the 816 DBD and the Epic was no improvement for me at all. I tried the Fusion this past weekend and I am now looking for a 10.5 head on the bay. I prefer taking more loft and turning it down rather buying a 9.5

I bounced from Epic back to Fusion as well - maybe a few mph of ball speed less, but the dispersion, consistency and "straightness' overwhelm that .

I'm a little surprised the Fusion hasn't gotten at least a bit more love as well.

I'll 2nd (or 3rd, or 4th, or,,,, ) how straight this driver is. Hard to turn it either way.

I've been out of the country since December and am DYING to try the Epic, launched just after I left :ninja: . But before I left I was having LOTS of driving problems "chasing" a positive AoA.

I treated myself to a birthday present of a very slightly used 9* Fusion driver with the Diamana Red shaft. Now, I've never even tried the Red because a high(er) launch is something I don't need but that was the stock shaft. I have used the Whiteboard and the Blueboard over the last 10 or so years and I do like Diamana shafts.

Got some pretty decent numbers on the LM including a surprisingly low spin rate for such a (presumably) high handicapper's driver, so I bought a recently traded back Fusion for a slight discount ($350).

Anyway, I didn't use it right away. Just used my Cobra Bio Cell+. I HAVE been using it for about 4 months now and I don't find any noticeable improvement (or loss) in length but it is definitely "point and shoot". Hard to curve in either direction, even if you try.

And the Diamana Red ? Well, having stopped chasing the upward AoA and swinging mostly level again I find that if I tee it high it flies high. If I tee it down I hit low bullets. D'Ohhhhhhhh.

An added plus - I can tee it low and hit a "punch drive", sawing off the follow through, giving up about 20 yards but hitting it dead straight - and into the wind this shot works verrrrrry well.

Net-net I get back to the states in 3 weeks and can't wait to try the Epic. I also expect I'll try to pick up a few different shafts to try with the Fusion (a bonus that they'd fit the Epic as well if I get one of those). I'm thinking the Tour AD line. I actually hit a Titleist D3 and an XR14 Pro a few times here on the course, both with Tour AD shafts (1 MJ-6 and the other an MT-6) and smacked them right down the pipe as well.

And of course because of the few swings with the XR Pro I want to try the XR16 Pro as well !!! Maybe the Sub Zero too !!!
