...when you see their driver and it has momentous crown marks, but yeah, you hear how they bomb it...in fifteen years, JP has never had a crown mark on any wood...

...they carry a ball in their pocket all the time during play...sorry, you are probably going to cheat at some point, which is, you know, something that happens...

Their neck skin is pasty. You can't play and be pasty, sorry. Not even an Irishman.

Played with a guy a few weeks ago who "tagged" himself as an "8.............from the tips."

I introduced myself as a "7.8...............from Virginia."

  • Blatant ignorance about the HC system = lies.

The mysterious back pains or stomach cramps that show up after a few bad holes, then fade away after a few pars.

  • Fake Injuries = lies.

The ball that is found in the woods with opening to the fairway, on an area cleared of debris...................absolutely amazing.

  • The found ball = lies.

..When they say that their driver doesn't have crown marks. They ALL have them.

Also, I always carry a ball in my pocket because i am very liable to lose a ball and I'm not about to hold up play to go back to the cart to get a ball.

10-4. Course Handicap

A player's Course Handicap is determined by multiplying a Handicap Index by the Slope Rating of the tees played and then dividing by 113. (See Section 3-3.) The resulting figure is rounded off to the nearest whole number (.5 or more is rounded upward).

So, does that mean you're lying?

Ohhhhhhhh snap!

My index is +2.3, so at my home course I play as a +2 from the tips and a +3 from the blues. Just sayin'

More along the lines of the thread matter, I recently heard an older guy (60+) on the putting green declare that he'd "turned down the invite to play Augusta twice and never played it". This was in the middle of a conversation where he was all but begging the other guy to get him onto Pine Valley. Same conversation also included "I could still win pretty much any event if I got out here and practiced but I don't feel like it anymore". This was said while he was practicing on a weeknight.

...when this military guy I got paired up with who was about +7 thru 16 talks all this game. Here's a couple things he's said...

Guy: "I'm usually under par"

Me: "oh nice what's your handicap? +3 or +4?"

Guy: "it's about a 1-2."

Me: ?

Earlier...Also the same guy: "man the wind is blowing pretty hard today"

Me: yeah I guess. (In my head, I'm thinking it hasn't been more than 6ish mph today)

The guy had new woods that didn't fit him well. (Long hitter, but had obvious spin issues with both dr and fw and sprayed the ball). Spanking new Scotty that he always left short.

I should have congratulated him...I crowned him the most obnoxious player I've ever been paired up with in my life.

I understand course HC well.

Yes, he was lying. Only because he wasn't playing the tips. He was playing one up with me and another guy. He "advertised" his HC on the first tee and then subsequently pulled his first tee ball directly left. And, according to my scorecard that I kept for all three, he shot +18, I shot +6 and my friend shot +11. On 18, when I asked how he finished, he stated he was a little off, "but 79 ain't bad".

I don't know if it's lying, but I notice a lot that the guys who brag about their golf game, I can never get them out to the course to actually play. They always have something going on 24/7.

To each their own...

Yep. I sure can't relate. I'm quick to tell people I'm a shi77y golfer. Lately, my partners will comment that it looks like I've improved. If they knew how much more I've been practicing they'd still know I suck. My neighbor claims to drive the ball 260+ consistently. Nope. I just don't get the ego/golf conundrum. Maybe it's because I've gone the athletic route in my younger days and feel no need to have to prove myself anymore. I race a yacht with a few friends and one of the guys (the oldest one, curious enough) gets all pissed that we're slamming wine while he wants to actually win the race. I've come close to throwing him overboard. lol... (disclaimer, I don't own the yacht, just crew on it)

Fair enough, and perhaps he was lying (I am a 9.6 index, and have shot more than my fair share of 90s recently, which included many pulled/pushed/hooked/sliced shots, but never included an "I shot 79" when in fact I didn't). However, I was just pointing out that what he said is not "blatant ignorance of the handicap system", but actually a better understanding than most have if he knew what he was actually talking about.

I don't know how to not lie when talking about my scores. I only post tournament rounds on my handicap online and I have scores that range from a +1.2 to a 13. I usually just say I'm inconsistent because I know I can shoot 70 but I know I also can shoot 85 if I play bad.

If I say that I am a 2.1 handicap and then shoot 82, people think I'm lying so usually I go with, "i'm not really sure." lol

Yeah people don't get that a lot of single digits have big scoring ranges because they're erratic. Lots of 80s shooters have really narrow scoring bands because they only hit it about 210 off the tee and it's kind of hard to hit it that far off line at that distance, so they don't lose a lot of balls of tee shots, dribble it around, and shoot 85. But if you just drew a straight line from their miss in the right rough at 210 and extended it out to 280 that tee shot all of a sudden is either in the next fairway or in some guy's pool.

I know lots of guys who have ranges of 70-85 depending on the day. Just yesterday I played with a 7 who is fairly long, was a little nervous, and fired a 98 (54-44). He played his round by the rules, finished it out, and posted a bad number, its fine, it's totally normal. Still though, the guy was very obviously a 7 who was having a rough day.

I tell people I suck ... If I shoot a 72, they'll be pleasantly surprised. If I shoot an 80, they'll be like, yeah, he kinda does.

I'm actually with you there. I had everything from a 70 on a course rated 75.8 last year to an 87 on a course rated 73.7. That's a big gap in scores, but that is amateur golf.

The plight of a 12 whose home course is wide open. I'll get paired with guys and if they ask my handicap I'm just like "ehhh all that matters is if my short game is on or not". If I actually give a number they'll either think I'm hustling them if I go out in 34 (actually had that happen but luckily it was only over $5) or think I'm an idiot if I go out in 50. Flip a coin.

If I'm on a different track with trees/OB/hazards then my score will pretty consistently be high 80s. At least that's predictable.

I agree. If everything is on, 68-69 isn't out of the question. If I'm driving it bad then it'll be 74-77. Bad short game and putting it'll be 77-80. If everything is off I'll shoot anywhere from 80-90. It's the consistency part of it I struggle with.

Yes it is. It's a struggle. If I would play with you when you shot 87 I would think you're a 80s player. If I saw the 70 I would think you're around a scratch.

Hard to tell if someone is good or not based on one round. So usually I look at their handicap and their scores (before playing in a tournament I do this to see if they are any good since their handicaps are posted along with their profile). Two types of players. a 2 handicap who says he's a 2 but only plays his home course from the mens tees shooting 75 everytime. Or a 5 who plays tournament golf from the tips on different course on ratings that range from 73-76.
