Rahm chipping/pitching

Anyone noticed Rahm's use of seemingly low lofted clubs for chipping? One of the strongest parts of his game and interesting that he is using this kind of an approach to the short game given the recent trend of young guns defaulting to a 60.

Here is a chip in last week that looks to be an iron: https://twitter.com/i/web/status/861233125157765120

BTW: 28th in scrambling from fringe

It's a great approach. Ray Floyd called it "putting with loft" and he was one of the finest short game players of his era.

its a fast diminishing lost art due to agronomy and design of current course, old school courses allowed you to use more straight faced clubs around the green, newer designs force the player to use the SW or LW for everything to get the ball to the putting surface..the bump and run is almost non existent, everything is now a flop

I chip a lot with 8 and 9 irons when you have those straightforward chips from just off the green. It was standard fare in the era I grew up in. I think a lot of amateurs would be helped if they did it. A poor chip with a 60 degree could leave you 20 feet. A poor chip with an 8 iron will still get some roll and might leave you 10 ft.

Non-pro's usually try to use a SW or LW for any shot around the green, part of it is probably practice time and the other part is not wanting to walk back to the cart to get the right club for the distance each time.

Rahm has one of the best short games I've seen in quite some time.

That's one thing I see a lot with my playing buddies. They use sand wedge or lob wedge to chip all the time and almost every time they leave it way short.

That's another reason I went with a AW to match my irons. I'll use anything from a 8-AW or 54/58.

I use my 5 hybrid whenever I can...almost never bladed/chunked, and usually ends up with a very makeable putt.

Probably not the best choice for a low handicapper/scratch, but for others it's worth trying out.

My course has small raised greens so I use 3W alot. I love bump and run from a good distance out, but close to the greens it's hard to judge bump and runs hitting into slopes so I need to get it rolling straight away. 3W is perfect as it the ball gets rolling quickly, but the higher loft than putter helps it get through the longer grass around the green.

The two and three tiered elevated greens with bunkers/hazards front and back in modern design combined with 11+ stimp make judging bump and runs very difficult. Very tough to predict rollout to a back tier and too difficult to stop to the front tier. Why the Open Championship is always a joy to watch as many holes allow for this and sometimes require it.

You may be right about him often chipping with irons, I don't know. But looking at that video, I imagine the green is very fast, the chip is short and he does pop the ball up in the air a bit, so I wouldn't be surprised if he is actually using a 52 or 56 degree wedge there.

it has to be a gap ( 52) or non set pitching wedge.. ball comes up to quick to be a 8 or 9 iron... also look at club head size and look at length.. if it were an 8 it would be an inch or more longer than that... he isnt really choked down at all...

I missed a lot of fairways and greens yesterday! I used my PW and AW more then my 58 today. I got up and down 6/8 with a chip in.

His chipping is immense and love watching players that get it running quickly. I mostly chip with the idea of getting the ball running asap. The rule of 12 really helps ie subtract the number of the iron you are chipping with from 12 and it gives an approximate ratio of carry to rollout so 9 iron 12-3 =3 parts rollout to 1 part carry 8 iron 4 7 iron 5 etc, a pw is around 2:1 and gap wedge would be pretty close to half and half. Obviously have to take slopes and green speeds into account aswell but it's great to see someone right at the top of the game do something that is generally only advised for high handicappers or links courses.

David Duval also liked to get the ball on the ground quickly. His technique was very simple and always seemed tidy and efficient to me.

I almost always walk up to a green that I've missed with LW, SW, and 9 iron. The toe-down runner is money!
