Members' Choice: The Best Game-Improvement Irons of 2017

Attention GolfWRX Forum Members! We need your help figuring out the answer to the question "What are the best Game-Improvement Irons of 2017?”

Vote in the poll above by selecting exactly three models. Please vote based on your personal experience with the irons. Things to consider include distance, forgiveness, workability, trajectory control, looks and feel.

After you've voted, in a post below, please explain exactly what lead to your decisions. You can use any format you'd like in your response, but we've provided an example below as a reference. We want to hear about launch angle, spin rate, stability on off-center hits, sound… everything. And don’t forget to tell us about the differences you saw in your fitting between your old gamers and your new gamers.

-- Iron Model 1: I like the forgiveness this iron provides, and how high the ball went. It provided me the best over all numbers.

-- Iron Model 2: I like its look and buttery soft feel. The long irons fly longer and straighter than my gamer set and with better stopping power.

-- Iron Model 3: This iron, for whatever reason, just fits my eye the best and I can really control trajectory.

Thank you for participating, and the results will be posted in the coming weeks in an article on our front page!

Nice survey but it looks as though you've got the categories a little mixed up. Both the Ping I 200s and the Mizuno JPX Forged, and a few others as well, as players clubs and not GI irons. Ping lists the G series as their GI iron for example. Still the Ping, Mizuno, etc. are all good irons to choose from.

The G series is SGI. There's a clear difference between all of these and players irons. There no way the jpx-forged or I200 belong in the same category as cobra pro, titleist CB, or jpx tour.

I agree. This poll is completely off the wall. It's missing all the real GI irons on the market like Ping G, Mizuno Hot Metal, Callaway Steelhead XR, etc.

And what's up with the different categories? GI irons are about ease of use and forgiveness; hitting the ball as close to target as possible even when a less than optimum swing is applied. They are not about trajectory management or buttery soft feel.

I'm one of the biggest GI fans on this board, and I didn't vote.

Ping G400 Max driver w/Aldila Rogue 125 Silver
Ping G425 5 wood & hybrid
Ping G30 irons w/Recoil 95

Ping G425 irons w/Accra ICWT 2.0 95
Ping Glide wedges w/Recoil 110
Ping Redwood Anser - the "real deal!"

I agree. This should be two groups by index. SGI High Index 12+ and GI 6 to 12 cat?

Hitting the Hot Metals Saturday at Scary Island in Elverta ..... I am currently playing at 10.

Cheers

CF16 for me is best (why I play it :taunt: ). I love the look of the matte silver, not too white/bland like the mizuno. The Srixon also look great, but I like the slightly softer/less square toe of the CF16 compared to the srixon. And I thought it felt a touch softer, but really no huge difference between the two. And the forged feeling of the two trumps the i200. Plus I can't stand that the iron number was put on the toe tha you can see at address. Drives me nuts.

There's also definitely 2 GI groups, as noted above. I think irons are broken down into 5 total groups: tour level (MB, 965), Players 0-8 (AP2, Apex Pro, JPX Tour, 765), Low-Mid GI 6-15 (CF16, 565, i200), Mid-High GI 12-20 (Steelhead XR, G, M1), and SGI > 18 (M2, GMax, Big Bertha OS). Obviously people in different Handicaps can play anything they want, but these divisions seem to be easy to divide

Titleist TSi3 Ventus TR Blue

Titleist TSi2 3W, 5W Ventus TR Blue

Callaway Apex CB 4-PW DG 120

Titleist Vokey SM9 50/55/60 Oban CT 115

Ping PLD Anser

I certainly understand some of the confusion about the categories. It's always challenging to decide what exactly is the cutoff between a players iron, a game-improvement iron and a super game-improvement iron, and just about all golfers have their own definition. That being said, we believe that we categorized these irons as fairly as we could.

Please help us out by voting based and providing feedback and what three iron models you voted for and why. We so much value your choices and feedback, and we're looking forward to sharing it with the golf world.

And be ready for the SGI list with the Ping G, the Titleist AP1, the Mizuno Hot Metal and the TaylorMade M2. It's coming next!

Not really sure about the list/choices.

Went with srixons because they are just the whole package. The callway apex are phenomenal as well. The third spot was hard but I decided to pick the one length's from cobra because I felt like they were trying to do something different for the game improvement side of golf. And while SL clubs have been out for a while, I do give cobra props for trying to make them more mainstream.

Are Ping G and Callaway Steelhead (non pro) not considered Game improvement irons ? I wouldn't place them in SGI like Ping GMax, Cobra Max, Bridgestone JGR, Cobra King OS.

3/4th of the irons on your list I'd consider for Pro lower cap type irons.

Ping G425 6-UW Alta Slate Reg

Ping Glide 4.0 56* WS Nippon Z-115

Cleveland CBX Full Face 2 60* DG Spinner

Hmm to me these are all GI.

Ping has Gmax as SGI

Titleist and Taylornade currently doesn't make an SGI set.

Mizuno has the EZ

I voted for Mizuno 900's because I game them - I feel they are a pretty solid mix of players irons and game improvement. It was a tough adjustment for me at first because I've played players irons since high school. I just only get to play maybe 8- 10 times a year now so I need the help in the long irons. I can honestly still work the 8 - wedge though in these... I also like them because they are a little fade biased where as the others I tried were all draw biased if anything with my swing.

i200's are better player irons that feel great, look great and deliver consistent yardages/trajectories. Tour pros are using these so game improvement? Maybe not

Mizuno JPX 900 forged are great irons although the lofts are super strong but they feel great. Look a lot like the tour model but are longer and stronger- no tour players are using these-

Apex CF16 are nice feeling but are so long it's hard to know just what is going to happen when you hit one good- will my 7 iron go 165 or 195? Tour players using the Apex Forged but never the CF16- definitely game improvement..

I like these 3 the most- should have included the Srixon 765 irons- they are the most under rated iron out there and are fabulous. I am currently gaming the i200's.

try the srixon 565 if you have hit the others on the list to compare, they are that good
