More Cowbell??? No, I NEED more Loft!!!

Just sharing a few insights I've made recently that have me putting much better than I ever thought possible.

 

I have always had an issue with dead feel and weird roll on many of my putts in recent years and I never thought loft to be the culprit, but I was dead wrong. Forward press and low loft are a recipe for crowning my putters into the ball and poor directional roll, but I just realized this issue and corrected it. I know I'll most likely get razzed for my ad-hoc approach, but I do all my bending on a vice(with leather buffer to protect finish) and eyeballing. I 'bent' a few putters I had, which seemed quite low, for more loft and the results are astounding. Feel, sound and roll seem much better and seeing as I've never been through an actual fitting, I can only speculate my loft needs, but this small increase of 2-3 degrees has my putting inside of 10 feet seem almost automatic when compared to before. Almost....

 

I have a new Byron that I love, but have been using quite gingerly based on weather, and it's higher lofted by design, and now I know why I putt so well with it. That being said, I'm sure some of the ones I've bent are between 5-7* of loft, but more loft in my case is better than exact/less.

 

I am almost welcoming the fact that my ball might get slightly airborne vs perfect roll cause at least I'll know it is starting on my intended path!! Inside 10 ft, for me, that's what seems to get the ball in the hole.

 

Avg putts per round pre-bend(low loft) = 32 , Now(more loft) = 28(limited samples) and I had the most holed footage of putts during my last round in a LONG time. My fringe putting was always something that I shied away from too cause of poor distance control, but with more loft now, I think I'll be putting more often when close to the green!

If you forward press a lot like the tour guys who use putters up their arms, you definitely must have more loft.

Yeah, I do to an extent, maybe not quite like Phil is accustomed to doing. It was a weird feeling like I was mishitting putts for the longest time, and I'm not sure why I ignored this until now. Like I said, I'd rather be elevating the ball at impact vs driving it into the ground.
