Spent a night with a girl from UW-Parkside once in college, I felt the need to check for ticks after that.

I learned from the Wolf of Wall Street that all you need is a shot of penicillin.

Ticks are definitely a problem here in NY and my family in Wisconsin tells me they are a problem there too. One course here (now closed for a solar farm) appropriately named "Tall Grass" must have been a tick resort because we'd all end up with at least 1-2 crawling on us before the end of a round. Will be less of a problem for pro's since they wear long pants, though I'd suggest they wear lighter colors so their caddies can spot them easier.

Given the forecast, might be best served by wearing some water proof footwear. Last year Oakmont became a real mess in spots for the fans. Behind and around the 3rd green was just a big mud pit. Other spots too. We spent one delay in an atm hut with about 20 other folks - can you say uncomfortable. Forecast is warm and muggy with possible severe storms - nws projects 3+ inches through Sunday - given the spotty nature of TS this could mean a real washout at times or little to no effect other than weather delays. Looks like most of this might fall before Thursday with some on Friday/Saturday. Nice day forecast for Sunday.

Considerable rain right before/during golf tournaments is definitely a pain. I made the mistake a couple of years ago of wearing mesh running shoes to the Byron Nelson during a month-long wet spell. Wet feet all day and a ruined pair of shoes is no fun.

they really ruin the spring & summer for me, especially mtn biking/hiking............a ball in the woods? hell i consider it lost and would never search for one anymore - got lymes a year ago, and while not really bad and under control, i would never venture anywhere i had to walk through long grass. be safe you guys, take any precautions if you could.

If you are going to the US Open, please wear DEET-containing insect repellent on your legs at the least.

That tall grass has tens of millions of ticks, and in Wisconsin you do not want to be bitten by a tick.

Good idea to check yourself for ticks at the end of the day.

Born and raised, lived over 50 years here. Played in forests, swamps, and all points in between. Never had a tick in any way shape or form...

Welcome to Wisconsin. Ignore the non-native trolls...

I don't think his warning of ticks in tall grass was in any way/shape/form an attempt to troll or insult your home state lmao.

Nor was my response an attempt to troll or insult those nice enough to visit this area for the first time. Simply provide first hand knowledge of the area from someone who lived here all his life. Ticks in a prairie setting with few trees? LMFAO...

Winner of clueless internet comment of the day. Wow.

I've lived in Michigan for 48 years, and never had a tick on me the entire time.. Until this year, and found TWO within a month's time. Found them fast enough where neither bit me, but did find one on my head, at which point my wife called me a "tick head" for a couple of weeks. lolI've lived in Michigan for 48 years, and never had a tick on me the entire time.. Ticks on the head cause a condition referred to as repeat postitis

You, my friend, are infected

You are correct. Permethrin-based spray on clothing especially on lower legs and ankles (socks) will repel ticks - much more effective than DEET. I live in Wisconsin and deer ticks are common in much of the state and are a real threat for Lyme and other tick-borne diseases. https://www.wiscontext.org/deer-ticks-wisconsin-and-diseases-they-carry

Saved my life last time I went camping. It's funny I saw Jimmy Walker send out a tweet (i think it was a tweet) about checking for ticks and using the proper precautions. I'd imagine he will be fielding some questions this week about it.

Growing up we would go camping on AEP's Re Creation land in southwest OH. It's about 30k acres of reclaimed strip mines. My dad and I named different areas that probably hadn't seen a human in years. One of those spots was "Tick Mountain". The name was given for pretty obvious reasons. I went up and over a big hill to scout a lake that the topo map said was there. It was and it looked like great fishing. As I emerged from this trek and came out of the chest high grass my light colored khaki pants were decidedly darker, and moving. Once I determined the cause I stripped down buck naked right there and immediately started picking the ticks off of me. Luckily only a couple had started the skeavy part of their existence.

That entire area was infested big time so we adapted. We came up with a whole new dress code for this area. Long pants tucked into knee high socks, shirts tucked in and duck taped over the bicep area. We finished off this new fashion with a healthy dose of a cologne called Deep Woods Off. No doubt we were quite attractive to the women folk of the area. We also used to joke about said womenfolk, something long the lines of she was an automatic ten if she had ten or more teeth. We did run into a true ten one time at one of the main campsites, she was sunbathing buck naked. I was approximately 13 at the time and it was the first time I had seen a women naked. She seemed pretty nonfazed as we strolled by and waved. She waved back. I was definitely fazed.

Born and raised in Wisconsin and you've never had a tick? Simply put, you don't go outside in wild areas. Most city people haven't had ticks.

Northern Illinois is not immune to the little buggers either. The pests have an ever expanding territory.

Long pants, headwear, proper application of repellent and you have taken good steps.

Strolling into obviously high exposure areas adds risk.

The fescue at Erin Hills is quite similar to our course at Shepherd's Crook, just south of the Wisconsin-Illinois border.

Why gamble? The swarms of gnats and mosquitos by themselves will have you scratching for a week.

Cheers!
