Gary Player v. Robert Trent Jones Jr.

QMany

Recommended Posts

I have defended Jack or Watson, Palmer or Miller and others about stating their opinions regarding anything golf related. I detest everyone jumping on them for offering their opinion when asked, or when doing their job, and then being immediately criticized as being old, grumpy or bitter. And I will stand by that.

BUT, Gary Player is indefensible, I mean for Eff's sake.......... Gary, I got some advice for you..... your legacy would be much greater if you let others talk about how good you were, and you were really good, rather than tooting your own horn, people would remember you in a much better way. I mean Jack will give his opinion on a subject but he never needs to remind anyone how many majors he won, it's just a given.

Didn't he say after his ceremonial tee shot at Augusta a couple years ago, "and I still play X stiff shafts!"

This thread turned weird...

I love everybody: short, tall, fat, skinny, bald or hair like Fabio, black, white, gay, straight......+5 hdcp or a hacker.

I'm not overly fond of clowns.....

Seriously dude, what do you have against clowns? What you don't like big floppy shoes?

Or wait, let me guess you don't like sad clowns? Well let me tell you something buddy, sad clowns are people too. They laugh, they cry and sometimes, I bet they even make pars.

Its people like you who make this country the laughing stock of the world.

(Ok, for everyone who is working, this is a joke post. I have a feeling that lumberman really doesn't mind clowns, in fact they may even make him laugh)

short people and their insecurities ...

Do you have a problem with short people, or the fact most of us are insecure about our height? Maybe it is because society values height, and most good looking women on dating sites indicate they don't want to reproduce with someone shorter than 5'10", yet would rather go out with an 8'11" giant. Yup, most women on match.com by saying that would rather go out with someone who doesn't exist (worlds tallest person is not 8'11" and is female with medical condition), than go out with someone 5'8".

Or the reason taller people get better treatment in society, and more respect.

Are you too insecure to feel comfortable being insecure about something?

Calling a short person insecure about height is about as bigoted as it gets. Do you use racial slurs, and that kind of thing? I bet you hate short people, and are secretly glad you are taller. I implore you to keep your thoughts to yourself on this topic, however, out of respect for other human beings whose bones are simply not as long as your's.

Height is a vestigial trait, largely, since we no longer do battle with animals to be able to eat and survive. Taller people are more metabolically-inefficient than short people, consume more food and water, etc.

And you know what, if short guys are gonna get ridiculed and trivialized by society, then short women should too. After all, tall women back in the day of hunter & gatherer culture would be able to emerge from the caves and gather more berries, apples, and water than the short women. So how dare men give them a chance?

There's just no need to remind short people of how people like yourself feel.

The word "insecure" is a cliched term. It's freaking bush-league, too.

I think you need to chill out a bit. Go shopping or something. At Baby Gap.

You kinda proved his point for him...

Yeah, I'm insecure about my height. And he is a bigot for copping that kind of attitude that caused him to post what he did.

Height is one of the few things in life nobody earns. If you're rich, or good at golf, or a neurosurgeon, or doing whatever it is you want in life, you usually have to work hard for it.

Anyone who is a tall man and reaping the benefits did not lift a finger to do that. So all the tall people who are quietly laughing to themselves, just remember that you did absolutely nothing to be tall; your body just carried out a set of biochemical reactions during birth to age 17 or so.

I very much envy the advantages you have in life that you didn't earn yourself.

I liked Fox's piece yesterday showing the short players (two of whom were 1-2 at the time). Though would it been socially-acceptable to do the same infographic, replacing height with color of skin? I think not.

I one day hope people will be judged not by the length of their tibia, femur, and vertebrae, but by the quality of their character. Gary Player's letter speaks to his character; his height should be kept out of it.

Full disclosure I am 6' tall, but I am a short hitter. Never been real long but age and injuries have caught up to me. People make fun of me because I am short when I play golf with them. Here on GolfWRX everyone brags about how long they hit the ball, and I just can't relate, I watch PGA tour events and those guys kill it and they show stat about how far they hit it and it makes me feel insecure. I am convinced golf is ruled by distance bigots. If someone replace skin color or height with how far they hit it, do you think that would be socially acceptable? What really pizzez me off is there is this guy I know who is only 5'6" and he is the longest hitter I know, it drives me crazy that he carries it 300 yards on a regular basis and I struggle to carry it much over 200.

I'm done! I'm quitting golf and I am going to start a new activity where clubhead speed doesn't matter, It was going to be fishing but then I realized that if I didn't cast my bait as far as others I might get ridiculed. Someone please help!!!

(just joking about quitting golf...but I really am a pretty short hitter, and my buddies do bust my balls, even when I shoot lower scores. :))
