Erin Hills spectator advice

For any of the folks who have been or are going, does anybody have any advice or recommendations as the best way to view the US Open? My dad and I are going Sunday. He's been to several tour events. I've never been. I think I'd prefer to follow a group, but is this doable there? How close can we get? How crowded? Can we see? How early do we need to be? etc.

 

Any tips or advice in regards to viewing any golf tournament are appreciated.

Any tournament is going to be a madhouse on Sunday. But the rule for any tour event is get there as early as possible. Sure looks like there is a lot of stadium seating, which is the way I would go once the leaders reach the back nine, if you can find something. But at least in the morning, I would want to be out walking the course. Sorry I can't give any specifics as to the course. I would be watching on TV for now and start with the holes most interesting first thing Sunday.

I thought it was mediocre viewing. It's a hilly course, so if you can get to the top of a hill you can get some good views. But it's a very big course, so it's a little harder to get really close to the action. It's not like old northeast courses where everything is close.

 

If I were you I would head out to the back corners of the course where it's less crowded. Most people are hang around the 1st, 9th, 10th and 18th. If you want grandstand, the 9th is a fun one because it's a short Par 3.

 

I would highly recommend going to the range when you first get there and then wrap around to the putting green. Those are always good spots and you can see how good these guys are. Speith was out on the putting green late yesterday and there only 20 people watching.

Been to plenty of events. Last year at Oakmont probably spent a third of the time at the range/putting green and then another third camped out at different greens (either in stands or standing just off). We also camped out at the 18th stands - it was a double view - approaches to 18 and tee balls on 12. Don't know if any such holes exist at Erin. Didn't follow any groups but did walk the course - the rain made some areas mud pits. I ditto the early - we got up at 5ish (and i would have done 4 but my wife balked) to make sure to catch an early shuttle and be on the course by 8 am - the drop off at Oakmont still required a half mile walk to get to the course - they like to take you through all the merchandise tents etc.

Use DEET. The ticks are killers. They use force in numbers and attack in packs.

OK views from different places. Went Wednesday and will be going back tomorrow. I have a feeling Wednesday will be the best with crowds and sightlines. The top of the hill halfway down 1 is pretty good. You only get a view of that hole, but if you get there early enough you can see the tee ball and the 2nd/3rd shots.

If you go behind the 8th green you can see approach shots/putts on 8 and tee shots on 9. I thought it was pretty cool to see both when I was there Monday.
