ESPN Article About Brooks Koepka Is Awful

"ERIN, Wis. -- Believe it or not, Brooks Koepka would prefer to be somewhere else than at the top of a U.S. Open leaderboard. In fact, he would rather be on a Game 7 mound in the World Series or in a Game 7 backcourt next to Stephen Curry in the NBA Finals.

He plays golf for a living, but don't you dare call him a golfer. He is an athlete. And since many people don't consider golfers true athletes, he pulls up his tight and short sleeves to show off his jacked arms and moves from tee to green like a panther stalking its prey."

I just threw up in my mouth...

That paragraph is good satire.

I've never really understood the "true athlete" expression. There's only been a handful of athletes who were good enough to play two sports at the highest level. Also, do we consider Tom Brady, Larry Bird, Steph Curry pure athletes? Seems to me that some people are naturally faster and jump higher, but that's such a small part of what makes an athlete and/or a champion.

That being said, when you get a guy like LeBron who practices as hard as Brady, Bird and Curry, it's easy to see why some people just assume it's height and athleticism that gets players to that level. That line of thinking, however, is ignorant.

If Brooks wanted to be something besides a golfer, maybe he should have spent hundreds of thousands of hours practicing something else.

Former professional golfer. Current amateur human being.

Ha! This article is pure ESPN. Is Koepka athletic looking? Yes. Could he have played another sport professionally? Maybe, we don't know. I hate it that all these announcers and writers automatically think because DJ and Koepka are fit that they could instantly be a world class athlete in any other sport. I liked mention of how Koepka played globally and worked his way onto the PGA TOUR, but I bet it is also insulting to him to say he would rather be somewhere else than the US Open.

As a FSU grad, I have seen both Koepka and our linebackers up close and can say he is nowhere near the stature that those dudes have. Even Bobby Bowden in his last years and in his old age at FSU would never have recruited him to play football.

That all sounds very dramatic for a 27 year old with one PGA Tour win, two years ago.

Blame the messenger. There are no direct quotes from Koepka about athlete this or stud muffin that, only quotes on how he's staying calm and playing a golf tournament.

Some more hyperbole from the author of this piece in the past. He sure likes 'athletes':

Jason Day lifted his gloved hand to his eyes and fell to the U.S. Open ground as if he had been struck by a wayward drive, creating the kind of chaotic scene around an injured athlete rarely found in the comfortable arenas of golf.

No blitzing or tackling or boxing out or beanball wars in this members-only, courtesy-car sport. From tee to green, golfers never have to worry about getting their faces rammed into the boards...

Dustin could've been a major-college baller, too. He had Whisnant's height, long arms, Arnold Palmer-size hands and the requisite vertical leap and athleticism to grab defensive rebounds and go coast-to-coast with the ball.

I honestly think the announcers run out of stuff to talk about lol... so you are constantly reminded that Dustin Johnson is an athletic specimen... tigers bulging biceps... on and on.... part of the reason I watch on mute a lot..... could these guys have played another sport professionally.. probably... but I would venture to guess Most pro athletes would succeed in another sport if they dedicate their time and effort into that sport.... but they are not doing two at once.

There are a TON of things to talk about, they just CHOOSE to talk about the same small handful of guys rather than all the guys out there grinding it out.

It FAR was worse when Tiger was playing, all they talked about was him.

BUT we all appreciate JD because he had a few successes despite demons and less than (lol) Adam Scott looks.

Joey Chestnut wins those hot dog eating opens no problem, without a big gut.

Maybe Joey Chestnut should enter Q school?

Annnnnnd it's not just ESPN. Did anyone catch the Fox Bois gushing over Hideki's quads a little bit ago? :swoon:

Lol it is bizarre... it used to bother me with Tiger... it was almost awkward to hear the announcers talking about his bulging biceps and ripped physique... im pretty sure golf is the only sport that does this. In the NFL they will casually bring up that someone is a freak athlete but never go into detail about their muscle definition.

Joey Chestnut on the Web.com Tour, maybe Sonya Thomas on the KLPGA? I could see it. They'd certainly eat up the rest of the field.

ESPN in general is just garbage, and has been all around for at least a decade now in my opinion. I don't even put it on the T.V. ever! Years ago, that was about all I would watch, many years ago. To me, it just seems like their target audience has changed too much, and all the separate side shows they have is just ridiculous, reminds me of the food channel. The few articles that I have read in their magazine while waiting to get my haircut, have always left me without any impression at all...well, maybe a negative one.

I'm sure his next article will detail how, in Spain, the bulls actually run with John Rahm.
