2017 Travelers Championship: Photos and Discussion

GolfWRX is live this week from the 2017 Travelers Championship at TPC River Highlands in Cromwell, Connecticut. The course -- it was designed in 1929 and has since been overhauled by Pete Dye, Bobby Weed, Howard Twitty and Roger Maltbie -- will play as 6,841-yard par-70 for the event.

 

Headlining the field is Rory McIlroy, who's currently ranked No. 3 in the Official World Golf Rankings, Jason Day (No. 4), Jordan Spieth (No. 6) and Justin Thomas (No. 12), who set the all-time major championship scoring record at last week's U.S. Open by shooting nine-under par in one round.

 

Last year, Russell Knox outlasted a strong final-round charge by Jerry Kelly, who shot 64 on Sunday, to win his second-ever PGA Tour event. It was Jim Furyk who stole the show, however, by shooting a final-round 58, the lowest score in PGA Tour history.

Seems like a stronger field then normal, post-US Open. I wonder if some of these top tier players had made the cut last week, they'd stay committed to playing?

What's with the tape covering the badges on the Pings in the Tuesday Part 1 photos at top of page?? These something new coming? Appear similar to the 55s.

I think he may have had the elastomer insert in the cavity replaced; because they are definitely S55s, and the tape is likely there to ensure they stay in place while curing. That is all I can come up with.

Lets say a player wants to test a certain head and/or shaft but doesn't like the combination, is it theirs to keep or do the manufactures take it back to their equipment truck for another player to try?

The red is a a reflection and the that's not the insert that was replaced. There is one in the muscle of the iron.

How low are the scores going to be in this thing? With a 7800 yard Erin Hills getting crushed, how is a 6800 going to hold up? Are there significant OB and hazards, etc?

Scores here can get pretty low. IIRC, Patrick Cantlay shot a 60 as an am and Furyk shot his 58 here. But the last 4 or 5 holes or so all have a lake to contend with and there's plenty of places to blow up a round. I don't remember seeing -20 or something lower very often.

I got a chance to follow Rory for a few holes Saturday. Here are some photos of his bag/ clubs. He was using the TP line Saturday, not sure what the model was though. The irons look even better in person IMO. Sorry if the images are all sideways!
