Strictly unconventional? I'd say Phil Mickelson. How many righties play left handed?

Alot

Yep, also the opposite is true.

I guess I've only heard of Mickelson. Who are others? Only ones who came up Curtis Strange and Greg Norman as lefties who play righty

Im right handed and play lefty. I know bunch of lefties who play righty.

isn't every swing is unconventional?

Everyone has their own opinion here.

IMO: the most typical model from a down the line view would be someone like Adam Scott, very on plane up and back.

Unconventional to me is

Backswing drastically different path than downswing

Or like Rahm, a really short backswing.

Phil has 5 majors, 42 or so wins, with a swing that is full of moves that violate almost everything that is considered 'conventional' if not anathema in what's considered a 'good' swing (long backswing, steepens in transition, flippy release).

Furyk's move is certainly idiosyncratic, and he will be a HOF'er someday, but when it comes to results and unconventional, it's Phil.

Not much in results but Colt Knost's swing is the one that really strikes me as the most superficially unconventional, for a professional.

Hogan was right handed. Started with a left-handed club, as it was all he could get his hands on.

Phil is in fact right handed... started w/left handed clubs and stuck with it.

I'm adding D. Berger to this topic given the results of the St. Jude. What a hodge-podge of positions that train wreck of a move is.

IMO this thread begins and ends with Trevino and Furyk and there really isn't any debate beyond those two. I'd put Daly in there but he has been so erratic that I'm not sure he qualifies in the "most results" category. And Furyk appears to be a choke artist (I used to have a saying..."Spraying your tee shot on 17 and missing the 6 foot par putt with the tournament on the line...that's what Jim Furyk does"), so he may not qualify in the "results" category either...but he will end up being a Hall of Famer.

Daniel Berger's swing drives me nuts, but Zack Johnson takes the cake. I look away every time he's on tv.

Furyk's swing is so far out there that I don't mind it.

I was going to say berger as a timely entry. He really goes after it. There are not points for style.

Berger rips and I'm sure he pures it, BUT, IMHO, that's a BAD back waiting to happen, We'll see.

"One of my University of Texas golfers was playing in a tournament in North Carolina. He won his first match handily.

He phoned me and said, "The guy I play tomorrow I can beat easily. He has a bad grip and also a bad swing."

My boy lost the next match.

"The lesson to be learned," I told my golfer later, "is don't be afraid of the player with a good grip and a bad swing. Don't be afraid of a player with a bad grip and a good swing. The player to beware of is the one with the bad grip and the bad swing. If he's reached your level, he has grooved his faults and knows how to score."

I've definitely quoted this in other threads here. One of my favorite pearls from the LRB.
