Could this be something close to what the secret is?

Recommended Posts

First of all if what i'm about to ask has already been discussed I apologize. Please feel free to delete this post.

I'm a high handicap golfer who struggles with the hooks, pull hooks and push slices. Got my swings on video on several occasions and the pros told me I have whats called "a hangback flippy swing". If I release early (which I usually do) i'd hit a hook or pull hook. If late then I block it or hit a nasty push slice. No matter what I try to do whether be change my posture, grip, backswing etc. i'd still intermittently hit those ugly shots. Especially when i'm under pressure I flip it even more. So my miss would be 90 percent hooks and 10 percent pushes.

I've always been a great admirer of Mr. Ben Hogan both the great golfer and person. Whenever I watch swing videos on youtube my first search would always be "Ben Hogan golf swing". Correct me if i'm wrong(which is also very likely) but I heard that Mr. Hogan also used to suffer from hanging back on his trail foot and flipping the club past impact(pre-secret I think). Then one day he found a way to get rid of it.

Now a week ago I was hitting the ball very straight at the range so I took it to the course and shot a 79(trust me I've never even came close to shooting in the low 80s). I did not do anything different in the downswing. I still feel like i'm hanging way back and letting my hands flip past impact. But somehow the impact felt different. I had my buddy video my swing and looked at the impact and was shocked to see that I had a flat left wrist at impact and post impact I did not flip at all.

Now here's what will make you guys realize i'm an idiot... I have no idea what i'm doing different in my backswing. But I hurt my left wrist lifting something heavy and it hasn't fully recovered so i'm doing something funky in my backswing to not hurt my left wrist. But I am absolutely positive that it has to do with how I set my wrist in the backswing.

So my question is this. Could it be that the secret is something Mr. Hogan did in his backswing particularly with the way he sets his wrist or hands that allows him to make the same move in the downswing(at least feeling wise)and never hit a flippy hook again.

I will try my best to find out and describe the thing that I'm doing differently when I have an idea of what it is. Hopefully my wrist won't heal too soon before that.

Thank you for your patience in reading my story. I have the utmost respect for everybody here on Hogan Heroes forum. Have a pleasant day sir/madam. WinKiePie

very hard to help when you are describing a feel thing, even video wouldn't tell us much, i guess.

anyway, thinking about it from a pure injury perspective your body would adjust by not fighting the release. e.g. like Monte and someone named Jack recommends, you release immediately, naturally and just turn. if you were to race your hands ahead and try to hold off is where the flippy stuff comes from but also puts a lot of pressure on your wrists. this is just my opinion, based on what your wrote.
