Top 5 Players to Watch and Why

For me:

1. Jason Day

His technique isn't perfect but he's capable of doing everything in every facet that best in class are. Rip off 350 yard drives, 250 2 irons up hill, putt lights out, etc. His style (including the big misses) and capabilities add a lot of intrigue.

2. Rory McIlroy

One of the best swing of all time. Purest ball flight with the high, tight draws. Great driver of the ball, and since he knows it plays aggressively off the tee. My issue is he seems to take if for granted he's going to dominate, even when it's clear he's not. He may have Tiger-like skills, but he's playing in the post-Tiger era where the fairways are full of long hitters.

3. Jordan Spieth

Tough call between McIlroy and Spieth, but even though I like Spieths personality more, I put him behind McIlroy due to the intrigue of Rory's power. Anyway there's just something precise and intense about Spieth that makes him magnetic to watch when he's playing well.

4. Dustin Johnson

Great power but a little monotonous when he's on. Every shot seems pretty much the same.

5. Patrick Reed

Great ball flight, love watching his shots on pro tracer. Compact swing, can take on anyone. Has to be on short list of next player to win his first major.

Sergio - I like Sergio but he is not my favourite player. The reason he has to be on this list is simply the way that he works the ball. Followed him at St Andrews in 2010 and they way he manouvered the ball around the back 9 was just unbelievable good.

Adam Scott - He played in the same group as Sergio when we followed them round and he was a complete contrast to Sergio in that everything just seemed to be exactly the same but the way that he went about it was superb. He is my favourite player and that swing!

Justin Thomas - really enjoyed following him last year at The Open. It's a swing which has it's unorthodox parts and it's something that has been said too often but he does hit it a mile for a small guy. What I enjoyed about watching it is how much he tries to get out of it. When he is in full flow, the ball striking is great considering how hard he is going at it.

Rory - he hits is hard and it goes far but there is just a little aura around him when he is out on the course.

Beef - definitely not the best golfer on this list and America has been a move too early for him this year but it's just nice to see someone playing golf with a smile never far from his face. Just a breath of fresh air in professional golf.

Freddie Couples what a swing

Rory hitting it both ways taking on everything

When Bubba is on he's class to watch amazing creativity

Tiger cause he's Tiger and could basically do anything with a golf ball

Harrington as an Irishman nothing beats seeing this man in contention the intensity in the eyes and will to win are immense!

1. Rors. Just immense talent. Fun to watch.

2. Phil. Love the go for broke attitude.

3. Beef. Just something different to watch. Guy has talent and a unique personality.

4. Fowler. Plays to win.

5. Rahm. Love the passion and drive to win.

omissions:

Day: too fragile, freaky eye thing

DJ: boring

Spieth: too much dialogue

Reed: I can't warm up to him.

DJ: I'm not a long hitter, but I tend to gravitate to guys that are opposite of me. I love seeing someone just overpower a course, and since he got so much better at his wedge game, it's a fantastic round to watch. I love seeing him blast a 350 yard drive and follow it up with stuffing a wedge tight to the pin. When he's putting well, it seems like the game is just so much easier for DJ than the field.

Sergio: I have always loved his swing. It's nothing I would ever try to emulate, but watching him drop the club into the slot right before his downswing is magical. I like his fire and always respected that he would stand up to Tiger when Tiger would piss him off on the course.

Freddy Couples: How the F does he have such an effortless and beautiful swing? That move is incredible.

Ernie Els; Same as Freddy, but probably more likeable, at least according to rumor. I could watch that smooth swing and pause at the top all day long. I wish I watched him more when he was in his prime.

Rickie Fowler: He gets a lot of crap for not winning majors, but his time will come. He's a great role model for youth, which the game desperately needs. He seems to really enjoy playing golf and you don't see him throw hissy fits like Spieth. I love his new swing. He's got power off the tee and a great putting stroke. He's just a good all-around player with a good attitude to match.

Alternates: Louis O and Duf. Louis has arguably the prettiest swing on tour. Duf is just a normal dude that a lot of people can relate to who's had to grind and hustle his entire career. It was great to see him win a major.

1. DJ - Power and a short game to match it

2. Lexi Thompson - Bombs the ball and is really exciting to watch. Never a dull moment watching her.

3. Spieth - You feel like he is going to do something special every time he tees it up and he usually does.

4. Sergio - Pure ball striker and a little theatrics

5. Adam Scott - Best looking swing in the game

1. Tiger: the Big Cat. The legend. I could watch Tiger shoot 75 all day and still just be in awe watching Tiger.

2. Rory: Unreal talent, aggressive style, beautiful swing. Likely the closest to a Tiger-Talent that our generation will see. Unfortunately hasn't harnessed the talent like TW did.

3. DJ: plays the game the same way I do. Bomb the hell out of it, wedge it in decently close, and make some putts. Also doesn't ride too high or too low which I can learn from.

4. Brooks Koepka: another athletic freak that has everything you need to play great golf. Hits it high, hits it a mile, and isn't afraid of the big stage.

5. Adam Scott: most beautiful swing of all time in my opinion. Pure class and elegance also. You'd want your daughter to date him, plus you could get swing tips.

I really enjoyed my time watching Steve Elkingtons old youtube channel. His swing wasnt perfect and I learned alot of bad things trying to be like him but I love his approach to the game and it almost feels like your interacting more when you can hear a major winner talk about what hes thinking when hes playing on a golf course. It's kind of like listening to Azinger or Faldo commentatig and there is something crazy about the knowledge of somebody who has played at high level and won a major in the pga, they see things and know things around a golfcourse that I might not learn on my own in a lifetime.

But to give my other 4 I would have to say Jason Day because of his all around game and power. Phil because when hes on like the Brittish Open last year he really takes risks and is alot of fun to watch. Every major I watch I wonder and wish what Tiger would be doing if he was in the mix so I really love watching him for obvious reasons. I think Stenson is great too and there is something really mesmerizing about his swing, it looks full of power and so repeatable and simple he really does strike me as some kind of golfing machine or the golf terminator.

DJ - has always been a favorite

Phil - again, been a favorite and it's fun to watch him hit ridiculous shots, or at least try to.

Kuchar - have always liked him. something very calming about the way he plays

Chappell - no particular reason other than he's not afraid to take the risky shot

Fowler - lately his ball striking has been great to watch

Sarcastic, but honest

1. Jim Furyk: You watch his swing after a bad meal your mother-in-law cooked so you can throw it up in the bathroom.

2. Jon Rahm: So I get a reminder at how much of an a****** I look like when I act like a big baby on the course. It's supposed to make me do it less. Supposed to...

3. Robert Allenby: A reminder of how someone should act the complete opposite of.

4. Cristie Kerr: A reminder that women can be as much of an a****** on the course as men.

5. Jordan Spieth: A reminder of how talking down to myself negatively affects my game.

For Real

1. Rory McIlroy: An example of a perfect swing that's ultra powerful, yet not jerky and looks like he's giving too much effort to get that power. He's my height and a good swing example

2. Henrik Stenson: Just the swagger of pure belief in oneself. He's stoic in how he goes about his business... Most of the time

3. Rickie Fowler: He hits shots. Seeing him in person he can curve it anyway. He can go high or low in terms of ball flight. He's very even tempered no matter what's going on, externally at least. It's a blueprint for how I would like to carry myself on the course. It won't happen, but at least there's a blueprint.

4. Ha Na Jang, and really the rest of the South Korean women golfers: They play with joy. They seem to really have fun being out there and competing.

5. Michelle Wie: Legs for days...

IRL - Southern Scandinavian golfer Sören Kjeldsen is the most rewarding golfer I've followed. Do not act like a Diva, enormously polite and wear the emotions of his golf almost to perfection. A great character.

On TV - Obviously rooting for my fellow courntrymen, but I only prefer Stenson on his pin bombing days and when he's pissed. He swears a lot in scandinavian. I do prefer Alex, but most of all Robert Karlsson. Da man.

Otherwise for guys in general, I would say

1. Boom boom. smoothest still.

2. Rory. Both the way he really whacks the ball and the way he steers the ball with his lower lip

3. Snedeker. Plays really fast and seems affable.

4. Sergio. Both that lag, and also you never know what will happen.

5. Spieth. There are at least 5 things there to annoy you, including that swing. But the youngster has a great touch, really lives his shots, and seems generally ok, level headed like.

As for swing aestethics

1. Boom boom again. That casual back swing...

2. Jacquelin. Seeing it IRL is something almost pornographical

3. Rory again. So anti-Stenson, you can really see him give it a hiding, just not part of a rotation.

4. Els.

5. Jaco van Zyl

We talking new guys or anyone?

1. Spieth. Very focused. Pointed in his self-commentary. I'm vocal of myself when I make mistakes and I can relate.

2. Rahm. He's going to do well IMO and might surpass Sergio.

3. Couples. When he's not hurting it's like watching ballet. Just a gorgeous, fluid swing.

4. Mickelson. He's never really in trouble and his Feherty interview was terrific. He damn near plays poker odds on shots regarding plus/minus when doing something stupid. A calculated stupid. He tends to get away with it which is why he's someone to watch.

5. Oosthuizen. Possibly the most economical and repetitive swing out there right now. Wish he putted better.

A bag of left-handed junk.

Bubba because when you see him live you appreciate how unique his self-taught game is. Saw him bend a 5 wood shot off the turf in Rio that was amazing.

Oosthuizen because I love his tempo and wish I had it. Driver swing looks effortless.

Phil because I might get to see a cool shot around the green and I love how hard he still competes after two-plus decades on tour.

Spieth because when you see him line up a 40-footer, he's not hoping to two-putt. Best clutch putter since Tiger.

One old guy: Kenny Perry because he stuck a new 405g Argolf putter in his bag and went right out and won the Senior US Open, and because his hitch-y swing is highly effective.

I don't see much LPGA but got to see her with the recent US Open coverage. Her awesome swing and cool on-course demeanor have a magnetic attraction
