pros not carrying umbrellas??

watched sung kang's game kinda collapse after he was caught in a sudden downpour last weekend without an umbrella or any raingear and wondered if anyone else here ever found himself in a similar situation..

 

i for one cannot even remember when i didn't have an umbrella in my golf bag and i've been playing for almost 60 years..

 

seems like some kind of a mortal sin for any golfer much more a pro...

 

and the worst part is he could have won without those distractions..

I can see why the Pro's leave them out of the bag sometimes, probably makes things easier for caddies but Kang just sums up why it's a bad idea. Perhaps it's my being Scottish but I never don't have my umbrella and waterproofs in the bag.

As I'm using a Motocaddy, I'm not even concerned about the extra weight. I even use my umbrella as a sunshield on hot days. It's better than any hat. Although without a little breeze it gets kind of hot underneath the umbrella but at least you're out of the sun. Had heat strokes before. No more.

Ryan Moore bought a North Face shell off a fan once when he had no rain gear. Used to be a clip on YouTube.

 

Kang's caddy was maybe a bit green behind the ears there, you wouldn't catch a vet doing that.

I rarely bring an umbrella, I just find them bigger annoyances than anything, however I'll have my Gortex pants and jacket in the bag, along with a drizzle stick (mini umbrella) to keep the clubs dry as possible, along with a couple of clean towels so I can dry my head (I don't wear hats).

 

Dealing with putting the umbrella down, picking it up, then if there's wind having it blow away, just a pain.

 

That said, if I'm a pro with a caddy and he's dealing with the umbrella, that's a different story.

i was there when it opened up on the 16th I am not really sure an Umbrella would have helped him.. i guess a little. It was sideways heavy heavy rain. he missed that birdie to tie from 4 feet and he was done after that.

In the post-round interview, it sounded like Sung Kang took full responsibility, and didn't try to throw his caddie under the bus. He clearly stated "There was a 0% chance of rain in the forecast" at least twice, which seemed to imply that it was his own executive decision not to put one in the bag.

I don't carry one, but I live in Phoenix. It defineitly seems a little silly for a pro to not have one.

those who feel an umbrella is only for rainy days have obviously never played on very sunny days...
