Sahalee Players Championship

I just got back from the Sahalee Players Championship in Sammamish, WA. It's billed as one of the top 5 amateur events in the US, and former winners include Kyle Stanley, Ryan Moore, Jason Gore, Casey Martin and Daniel Summerhays. I volunteered for live on-course scoring and pace-of-play monitoring, so I had an up close view of the action. After my duties were over, I walked the last nine holes with the final group. Similar to NCAA regional and national events, the galleries are pretty small, so we were right next to the players all the time with no ropes.

 

The winner in a sudden-death playoff was Sahith Theegala over Min Woo Lee. Never heard of these guys? I am betting that you will in the near future, particularly Theegala. He won with a birdie on the 535 yard uphill 18th hole (9 North). I believe that he hit hybrid for his drive and second shot. His second shot was from 265 yards to the center of the green, which he flew onto the green, and it bounced just over into the rough. He was carrying a Ping G400 driver and hybrid. The driver had a Fujikura Pro shaft and the hybrid had an AD-DI shaft. He had a full set of Ping iBlades. I should have taken pictures - sorry. guys!

 

If you've never volunteered for significant amateur events, I'd highly recommend it. The players are all super friendly, and you sure get to see some great golf. I find it much more fun than a pro tour event. Contact your state golf association - they are always looking for volunteers.

I think he goes/went to Pepperdine. He won the Monday Collegiate event at Riviera to earn a spot in the Tournament. Pretty sure he played in the US Open.

My favorite quote from the World Golf Championship event around ten years ago was: "when you fly over it, you can't see any fairways" (because of all the big trees). The trees certainly come into play if you spray it around, but the greens were the killer this time. Very fast and hard, but they looked beautiful. On one of the par 3 holes (#5 South), a remarkable number of players putted into the water. That pin may have been a little bit extreme.
