From what I've seen it's about not sticking short irons and wedges close enough, often enough.

How many times have we seen him block a wedge to a tight right hand pin and then flounce around because he's missed the 20 ft putt back.

On the other hand, if it's all about 'between his ears' then he's well stuffed!

Not just the wedges. His data in the past two months show the sad state in his iron game.

However his reputation as an average putter is an easy alibi for his current struggles.

Much like how after every club tournament every 20+ handicaps blame their putting when they missed the 4 footer for double after topping their 2nd shot and chunking their 3rd.

To be fair he has been injured and hit 16 of 17 greens on Sunday shooting 65 let's give him a little bit of time to get firing again.

Get a Scotty... Settle in and quit fussing about.

I've got three. Newport 2 select, X5 Custom slant neck, X5w face balanced.

And an odyssey, and 4 taylormmades, and 2 pings, and a Mizuno, and an old daiwa, and a bullseye.

And a few more in the basement that I can't recall at the moment.

None of them work. All defective!! ; )

  • 2 weeks later...

I caddied in the 1988 Sr PGA Championship at PGA National.

Saw Arnold Palmer bring out 5 to 6 putters two days in a row to the practice green.

And this was not in the practice rounds.

I read where he always traveled with a car trunk(plane in his case) full of putters. He would try out different ones and go with whatever felt best that day. I'm almost that bad.....of course I suck at putting.

He had racks and racks of them at home. (source http://www.golf.com/photos/home-arnold-palmer)

I read somewhere that Tour reps say that 10% to 20% of Tour players switch putters every week. One Tour player, don't remember who, says he has more than 100 putters at home.

I know Tiger and Hideki have alot

For a guy like Rory, i'm guessing that TP is almost identical in weight, balance and feel to his previous scotty's and Nike putters, he just needs to get his confidence back up for putting as everybody knows he has the ability.

As for his current form, it does show i finally have something in common with Rory, i also don't like working weekends :taunt:

For me, young Rory McIlroy was one of the best I've ever seen at peppering flags and I think that part of his game has gotten worse over the years, while his driving continues to get better. McIlroy can 'get away' with being an average putter but the problem is that his short game has been worse this year, aso well as his irons not being exactly on point.

So there's some truth in the OP statement.

His real problem is that he's a terrible green reader. He spends the entire round missing putts, stepping back and doing the "How did it go that direction?" motion with his hand.

Doesn't matter what putter you use if you don't know where to aim it.

Most bad putting starts with poor green reading. It amazes me how most people have no clue how to read the line.

Can you win 4 majors, 2 by 8 shots, if you can't read greens?
