Devil's thumb has a couple big risk/reward holes. You should be seeing some very tame antelope there.

We saw a bunch on the first 2 holes!!! They casually stroll right through the fairways. Shot a 41 on the front.

I really liked Devil's Thumb GC, it was quite hot outside and even a tad humid as well. The slow play here was agonizing (their men's league is slooooooooooooowwwwwww) but I held it together to shoot an 86. It's tough waiting that much. On the number 1 handicap hole (bogeyed it) there were 3 groups on the hole and 2 groups ahead of me waiting to tee off. The pro shop offered me a free 9 holes due to slow play, which was nice, but I am going to play 9 at Battlement Mesa later on instead. The front 9 is better than the back 9 at Devil's Thumb, but really a good golf course with cool

views as well. Again, speedy greens.735ad5b6905eb68d5233ba81bb595ea9.jpgcc021f7fefee4d6bab25b2799057469a.jpgb3e6077e38ac5364a4c3a1562e48a166.jpg6b67bc1bcc0dc1c33975aa7a0576fe89.jpg328a989a9273f07a7387906ce3600c39.jpg45c27dadd3e37419bb8562ee8a37b3d6.jpgd90d7fe6e86f2956ca0dc4ca4d363fc7.jpg

I also snuck in the back 9 at Battlement Mesa this afternoon. Nice course, more like a midwest, green golf course. I am glad I could sneak it in.

I changed up my trip itinerary a little. Wyoming is out now. I am going to play Rifle Creek, Fossil Trace, Wild Horse, Awarii Dunes and then maybe Swope Memorial in Kansas City as well. That will be 21 courses in 17 days, not bad.

If I end up playing Fossil Trace on Wednesday, it will be my 500th different golf course played.

That's pretty sweet. I'll be playing my 400th next Monday.

You'll be driving by Bayside GC in Ogallala, NE on the way to Wild Horse. 'Not a bad course if you have time for an extra 9 or 18. The back nine is the more interesting of the two nines.

I take it you don't have time to drive up to the Sand Hills area of Nebraska? The Prairie Club's two courses are pretty special. It would be a 2.5 hour side trek from North Platte.

And a great trip in itself, been there twice. Have played Bayside quite often, front 9 is easiest to score on, back 9 is a challenge with 2-600 yard par 5's that are tough holes.

The par 5, I believe 11, will be engrained in my brain forever. That hole is something out of a nightmare (Bayside)

Oh and BTW Bayside >> Awarii Dunes

I agree, love Jim Engh courses but Awarii just isn't right. Neither is Fossil Trace.

You should have played Bayside the first couple years it was open (opened in 2002, IIRC), 11 didn't have the bail out area to the left of the fairway. 15 didn't have grass between the fairway and the green either, just a crap filled gully, full of balls and snakes.

I added Rifle Creek GC today, just to pad my numbers, it's really nothing special. I saw a few better looking courses along I-70 that I should have played instead. It's an OK, small town, country course. My wife and I played the front 9 to break up today's car ride a little bit. I am playing Fossil Trace in the morning. I am still undecided about Awarii Dunes. I would have to back track an hour to play it, so I'll probably just play Willow Lakes which used to be an Air Force base golf course (maybe it still is).18de17890f3c29ef514087216c48932f.jpg5ef73af0896d2ccb17288c1db0e8f7ae.jpgd6920d3e23af7c79e30efa7814f5e2f1.jpgf9686af1113521e0690301ac73c665a5.jpg9f122a2848f6507d603500b1a4e0c887.jpg7fbee943448d4039eab9b0329fb895b9.jpg

My Wildhorse tee time is at 12:50 on Thursday, not sure I can convince the wife to get up earlier that day to play an extra 9 on the way!

Someone had offered to get me a tee time in Sand Hills, but I would prefer to combine that with Prairie Club next time, without the wife. Boys only, golf only.

Someone offered you a tee time at one of the top 10 courses in the world, and perhaps one of the most difficult to get on... and you casually passed on it? Friendship Over! (Seriously, big mistake. Would have forever changed your soul)

I have to agree, still trying to get on without paying an arm and a leg.

It also would have meant I could not go as far West due to additional expenses. I'll get there in a year or two, trust me! My wife has been pretty cool and allowed me to golf almost 18 days in a row and drive almost 3600 miles + by the time we get back to Ohio!

Wow Bend, great thread. Thanks for taking us on your journey.

I'm exhausted just reading this. Really impressed by your stamina to do all that driving and playing, and still finding time to mix in some of the sights.

We just hit Denver and my wife said I could go out and play another course while she chills at the pool, but I think I might even need a bit of a break!

Fossil Trace will be my 500th golf course played tomorrow morning. It will be my 29th new course this year, and I am going to try and get 50 new courses in this year as well. The most new courses that I have ever played in a calendar year is 46.

I almost forgot to post a few pics of my drive over the Grand Mesa in Colorado yesterday. These pics were taken at about 10,000 feet + elevation.c832ab38b23a2cb2fafb9f1a3365f970.jpg826a32e8bc2a0d0447b6c742b732f9e6.jpg0156275381ef66e7e401fedf7c0e07aa.jpg5d7c1638a5025a530e6b66f4ab1e468d.jpg

It's tough to get any new Ohio courses in bc I have played every single course, public or private wihin 100 miles with the exception of about 3-4 private courses in Dayton and Kenwood CC in Cincinnati. I'll get those in at some point eventually. . I have a weekend planned up in Cleveland in a few weeks for my son's soccer tourney and I'll squeeze in 1-2 while I am up there.

I wish I could have seen more sights, but this was a golf first trip. In Nebraska I'll subject my wife to a Pony Express museum, the world's largest train yard, Fort Kearney, and the Union Pacific Railroad museum!

In Kansas City, I am excited to eat at Arthur Bryant's BBQ!

Great thread and some epic courses. The rain just chased me off Fossil Trace practice green. Hope you can get out, they are usually pretty good about pairing up groups if there is an opening.

I'd recommend a few other Denver courses for your next trip.

Kenwood CC in Cincy is a nice, old school country club. Played it once when I lived there many years ago.
