Bend's Out West Golf Trip 10 states

I added Rifle Creek GC today, just to pad my numbers, it's really nothing special. I saw a few better looking courses along I-70 that I should have played instead. It's an OK, small town, country course. My wife and I played the front 9 to break up today's car ride a little bit. I am playing Fossil Trace in the morning. I am still undecided about Awarii Dunes. I would have to back track an hour to play it, so I'll probably just play Willow Lakes which used to be an Air Force base golf course

 

 

Where would you have to backtrack from to get to Awari Dunes, Bend?

 

Grand Island, Nebraska. So, it's about a 1 hour drive back to Awarii Dunes, and then back to Omaha. Is Awarii worth adding 125 miles of driving????

It is a course you won't get back home. In my opinion at 80 mph the time goes quick

Wild Horse and Awarii are on the same road (I-80)

 

I know. I would be playing Awarii on Friday. We are staying in Omaha Friday evening....

Gotcha Bend. You must be staying in GI after playing Wildhorse? I can't say about Awari since I haven't played it. But I've heard the greens are quite an experience. And Stetson is right, it goes quickly on I80 (used to drive back and forth between Kearney and GI to play single softball games). But I also understand that that 125 more is on top of a lot of miles traveled already.

Tough call. I was heading west, and had to backtrack from Wild Horse (morning) to Awarri (afternoon). I'd say it was probably worth it, even though Awarii wasn't my favorite course on the trip.

And Gothenburg (WildHorse) a little bit longer drive than from Grand Island.

Should have warned you about Moab but didn't want to give you bad thoughts going in. Locals think it special though.

 

Is that because there is nowhere else to play?

 

I think it's because of town pride. Got to give it to them, they are proud but I can't stand one thing about that place. There are some options within a hour and a half. Locals have to get used to travel since everything is marked up in all stores.

Woodland Hills GC in Eagle, NE wasn't bad. 'Typical parkland course.

If you are wanting a more tree lined experience after all the time in the wide open than go play Quarry Oaks. Woodland Hills is fine and lie in their marketing about being 5*, in reality they aren't a top 15 course in this lightly populated state. Quarry is directly on your path along I-80, will present a challenge and has some things you will remember (might see a pack of deer, turkeys, bald eagle, etc)

 

I'm a Links guy so I love being west of GI, but looking through your album I haven't seen a tree in quite a while lol.

Going to Awarii will add 2 hours to your drive time. If you add 3 hours to your drive time you can play Tatanka instead. Tatanka > Awarii. Obviously adding 3 hours isn't ideal but it is an unexpected option.

 

If you want to play a muni that is better than the vast majority Id suggest Highlands in Lincoln.

Quarry Oaks between Lincoln and Omaha. My favorite course in the state.

Or you could probably play Riverside right in Grand Island. Private, but I don't think it would present too much of a problem getting on.

 

Pretty basic, old school parkland style course. But almost (I should say at least it was when I was around there) always in very good condition. But it won't be a memorable course. I know Quarry Oaks is, and probably Awari.

Bend, here's another option. I haven't played this course either but have heard really good things about it.

 

Centura Hills in Cairo, Ne, which is just a few miles from Grand Island. Maybe Stetson knows something about the course.

 

It might be worth at least taking a look at it. And by the way, enjoy Fossil Trace!

Right now it is a toss up between Awari and Quarry Oaks for my Friday round.

 

I liked Fossil Trace more than I thought I would. A few goofy holes and it would definitely be easier the second time around. Most expensive round so far, $80. Was cloudy for the whole round. When Intold the starter that I was from Cincinnati, he gave me this cool pouch.

I decided to play Awarii Dunes Friday morning. Might as well.

Bend, Wildhorse is in great shape, greens are a little softer than usual, which helps. Wife and I got around in 3 hours, had to wait on a 4 some the first 3 holes, then we flew. After hole 18, take the first branch to the right and it will take you to your car, which will be surrounded by pickups. Enjoy!

Nice, NM, UT and CO have all been well over $2.25. Moab was about $2.79! Oklahoma was the lowest on the trip at $1.74.

I did, worst weather of my trip so far. Cloudy the whole time so my pictures suffered. Defintely a fun golf course. Considering that I only had time for 1 round in Denver, it was a good choice.
