Ping G400 Drivers

Finally got to hit a demo g400 LST with the HZRDUS 6.5 and I have to say I've never achieved numbers like the ones I saw on the monitors. And just for kicks I brought with me my current driver to do a side to side comparison.

Currently, I play the Nike Flex440 with a Kuro Kage dual core 60x which I thought is a decent driver, gets me about 265 total on a good day. I warmed up with it and sure enough I was in the 250s as expected. I picked up the Ping, still hitting in the same hitting bay, no one has touched the monitor, first swing 275! Hit another 282, another 280...whut!?!? Now I know I have take the numbers with a bucket of salt...but the sound alone got me sold. And truly, the ball just seems to explode off the face!

What really surprised me was how great looking the head is and how it sits. I know beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but man I've never been so giddy! I can't decide on the shaft!!

Has anyone confirmed if the uncharge OEM shafts (Hzrdus / KK / Xtorsion) are made for or real deal?

I inquired today, the shafts are the real deal. They said the Xtorsion may be delayed a few weeks since it's new to market. The Xtorsion should be lovely with the copper color and that it's counterbalanced to work with the head weight on G400.

Hit the G400 10.5 at the PGA Superstore yesterday. Didn't spend a whole lot of time with it, but i hit it enough to provide some good initial feedback.

Looks: The head size and shape are perfect. At address, it still looks like a 460 head. It seems most of the size has been removed from the bottom of the driver. Only complaint would be that the face height is very shallow - it's shaped almost like an oversized fairway metal.

Feel: The face feels phenomenal. has a "tingy" or metallic feeling... much different than the M series and Epics which are more of a dead/ muted/ composite feel. Con to the feel: I wasn't getting great feedback on where on the face I was hitting it

Performance: SS 120+ tested with a Hzrdus Yellow 6.5 cause that's the best x flex shaft they had in store. Not the best numbers I've ever seen. Ball speeds were ok, launch was good, but I was spinning the thing in the upper 3,000 rpm range with a couple over 4,000 rpm. I carry my M2 right around 300 yrds on the PGA store launch monitors... I didn't carry a single drive with this PING setup over 280 yrds.

Definitely need to test again with a low spin shaft and maybe the 10* LST head, but initial feedback on looks, sound, and feel were really good.

Long drive competitors shop at the place down the road.... :blush2:

I'm pretty stoked about these new Ping g400 drivers. Have always been a fan of smaller sub-460 cc driver heads. Loved my matte black 450 cc Xr 16 Pro. Hence the reason I really didn't get along with the new Epic offerings this season. Will be testing the G400 LST again my prior Xr16 pro and Epic in the Fuji Atmos blue shaft once Will Peoples gets mine built up!

only the Alta shafts are built at 45.75”. Any up charge shaft will default to 45.25”. I just ordered one with the TiNI dual core 60x at 45”.

I understand. But I'll just quote Bubba aka the face of PING for many years ...

Twice I've been offered a spot in the Re/Max World Long Drive Championship, and both times I turned it down. It was nice to be invited, but I thought altering my swing specifically to get more distance for that one event might wreck my game. But I did toy with the idea, and even had Ping build me a driver with 5.5 degrees of loft and an extra-long, 48-inch shaft. The longer shaft, which many people assume is an automatic trick to generating more clubhead speed, didn't work at all. It threw my timing off, and I didn't hit the ball much farther even when I nailed it. I did much better with my standard 44½-inch driver, simply swinging a little harder.

Trying a longer shaft is a popular suggestion these days, but most players should, if anything, try a shaft half an inch shorter than what's in their driver. (The average, off-the-rack driver shaft today is 45½ inches.) Tiger Woods at his longest used a relatively short 43½-inch driver, with a steel shaft to boot. You'll find it easier to hit the sweet spot with a shorter shaft, and you can go after tee shots without losing much control.

The fact that companies are still pushing these 45+'' cheap whips out there is insanity when the Tour contradicts everything when it comes to fitting clubs for players.

Many tour players are playing drivers over 45 inches.

.25 is not going to matter distance wise. If you want 45, special order it.

DiscountDans sells Ping again, great folks to work with.

Placed my LST with HZDUS Yellow, hope combo works.

Dang it, I wish I didn't see this, haha! Seriously considering giving the G400/Tour 65 S combo a go sight unseen.

No need to feel bad, they quoted me 399+ shipping and No discount code when I called in today. When i tried to order the XTorsion they wouldn't even take my order because the price hasn't provided to them yet. They aren't messing with Ping any longer

Serious question: What happens to a counter balanced shaft if you cut it down?

Same question. I am seriously thinking of ordering the xtorsion tipped 1" as a $75 experiment, but since I am between flexes I don't want to totally screw up the characteristics of the shaft/head/weight.

Why sight unseen, every dealer I've been to has all the the $399 and $429 (tour) options and a few even have all the $75 options in demos (mostly S and X in those upcharges). Plus if they have a fitting cart they have all of those shafts and some $300 exotic shafts as well..

I spoke to Ping customer service rep, Josh, and he said those are the "real deal" shafts. He said, and I'm quoting, "we buy a lot of the same exact shaft, we don't ask them to manufacture anything other than what they are making for aftermarket." Then I asked why do you have an aftermarket hzrdus yellow for $335? His response was to "give customers whatever they feel they need."

I'm planning to send an email and see if I get same response.

Regardless, I'm putting in order for LST 9* with the HZRDUS 6.5, even without having tried the other shafts!

Despite being a Ping fanboy, and my hope to find a reason to come back to them (I just left an all Ping bag), I guess I'm in the minority with early G400 experience. Now I've only got a 95mph swing speed, but I was seeing the same, if not slightly lesser numbers all around than with both my LTD, and my 915 D2. (against the regular G400 w/ stock Alta stiff shaft). Roughly 235 carry, 260 total average. Maybe it's more effective with higher swing speeds?

I did like the sound, and the looks...but based on the numbers I was getting at Golf Galaxy today, not sure there's really any reason I'll be bagging a G400.

Does anyone have any spec info on the Xtorsion shaft? I am debating between regular and stiff - SS is 92 to 95 with driver. In the Ping Tour 65 shaft I prefer the regular. In the Alta the stiff. I am liklely going to order at 44.5"

I just called Ping and the person I spoke to indicated they did not have detailed spec data on the shafts. He did indicate that X torsion shaft will likely be delayed and he thinks it has a softer tip. Amazing you can be selling a new driver in a couple weeks and you don't have specs.

Higher balance point (Like PING or Xtorsion) just allows a higher head weight for the same swingweight / feel compared to a lower balance point shaft.

As far as performance, tip and butt trimming will change the characteristics of the Xtorsion in the same manner as a lower balance point shaft.

Make sure to specify a swing weight on your order so if you get it shortened it will still feel the same. They will just add a heavier sole weight.

Yep, I warmed up with my current driver first. I smoked a few down the middle with it 290 and then duck hooked a few that went nowhere carry wise, followed by a big block to the right to compensate. I hit 12 balls with the Ping G400 LS and had none of those issues. The problems I had with my current driver are consistent with what I see on the course and range. I'm telling you these new Ping drivers are really forgiving, even in the LS head.
