Getting a little tense on Tour lately

Jordan Speeth

Recommended Posts

This weekend was the first time in a long time that I noticed some obvious dislike between players on Tour. Several times, Daniel Berger practically shoved Patrick Rogers out of the tee box after he hit, while he was watching his shot. Later in the round, Rogers putted out and headed straight for the next tee, leaving Berger to putt out on his own. Then, when Rogers was faced with that final chip shot to get into a playoff, Berger was walking around Rogers' through-line until Rogers sort of aggressively pointed at himself saying, "it's my turn, get out of the way". With all the buddy-buddy young guys on Tour we don't see behavior like this much anymore, the kind that was commonplace on Tour forever, before the current crop of players. In the old days, there was much more gamesmanship and there were only two rich guys out there, Jack and Arnie. The rest of them were fighting each other for a living, literally, and they'd do anything short of cheating to win. Then, on the Web on Thursday, I thought Stephen Yeager was going to kill Aaron Wise for his slow play. Did anybody else notice this, or any more of it going on?

I wasn't paying close enough attention to see all you did, but did notice a few times just BEFORE Rogers was about to take his putter back and stroke a putt DB and his caddie start walking toward him.

At least one of the times DB was at Rogers' 10-o'clock...and only about 15-20 ft away AND they were in the midst of the back 9 at this point in the rd.

I was shocked...thought, "Well maybe DB was on the same line..." but when it was his turn to putt he wasn't even close to Patrick's line.

It would have pissed me off and I would have had words with DB. I appreciate DB's grit but thought he showed a lack of class, only based on what I saw, mind you.

Under pressure I can see how it might be easy to forget a bit of etiquette and rub a guy wrong. Given the nature of some personalities out there these incidents are bound to happen. I've been following one particular golfer who rubbed a few folks wrong when he first came out, but he has calmed down a lot. We could see the same happen here. Seems like a close-knit bunch with some of the new guys. Can be a lonely tour if you don't make nice.

I saw the incident on 18 your talking about...that was pretty obvious he was not pleased with Berger.

Im not sure what Rodgers was pissed about on 18...while Rodgers was off the green, Berger was clearly outside of him. Probably a good 10 feet further away from the hole than Rodgers. Berger was rightly preparing to putt being farthest from the cup, but Rodgers seemed to have none of it.

The funny part is Berger canned his 60 footer for birdie after Rodgers missed that chip shot. I dont think TV showed it.

Berger didn't play well yesterday and Rodgers threw away a tournament he had complete control of. Its understandable why those two were kind of a toxic mix on the back 9.

I'm not sure if it was dislike between the two or just lack of etiquette on both their parts due to their personal struggles to perform better than they were. Berger seemed to be pushing Rodgers to play faster.

When I was watching the Greenbrier I watched Berger start walking as his partner just started taking his putter back. The first time I noticed it I thought it was a fluke, but he did it more than once. I wonder if he has a reputation on tour for these sort of things....

One of my buddies mentioned the Web.com deal Saturday morning. Said it really looked to him like Jaeger was really pissed by Wise's slow pace. Didn't Jaeger end up missing the cut?

Jaeger did miss the cut and Wise made it with a birdie on 18. You could tell Jaeger was frustrated. The announcers were even talking about how slow Wise was playing.

Quite a lot of players will admit there are players they don't like on Tour, as Harrington said about Garcia that time, it's like any job, there are just some people you work with that will rub you the wrong way.

I think it's just marketing that makes them all seem like good guys and everyone being good friends. This kind of thing definitely happens every week, just maybe not in televised groups. A lot of the players being televised tend to be happier anyway, because they're playing well.

Yeah, that was the coldest handshake of all time on the green at the end of that round. Jeager was seething. They probably sent security along to the locker room afterward. Even though Jeager is moving up next year, that's got to bend the guys who've been struggling out there for a long time to see these Golden boys just passing through on their way to stardom.

I didn't notice that. I wonder what Rodgers' beef was about in that case. That just shows how contentious it had gotten. Both of them were terribly rude to each other in any event. It's good TV, the drama that is, but those two were obviously trying to get under each others' skin. Berger seems the scrapper, for sure, but why cause a stir for no reason when you're out of it? I've read a few of his passive-aggressive digs at his buddy Spieth after his bunker hole-out a few weeks ago, calling it everything but lucky. Knowing Jordan though, you can't call it luck when he does it so regularly, so I think he needed to keep it zipped in that case. It'd sort of be like calling Tiger lucky for doing what he did regularly for ten years. Golf needs a little drama as long as it doesn't directly interfere with outcomes.

All I know is I was watching yesterday and doing some house cleaning at the same time. Taking the trash out I saw Berg hit this stinger off the tee on the back nine (can't remember the hole) but it stopped me in my tracks. Really cool shot that chased down the fairway a ton.

P Rogers did look a little peeved off on 18 green.

Slow pace of play is a huge pet peeve of mine...certainly don't enjoy watching it on tv either.

I did see a bit of the Web.com on Friday and saw the daggers Jaeger was shooting at Wise and didn't blame Jaeger at all. Personally I really hate slow play and that kid was walking off every shot, taking many practice strokes, backing off, apparently rubbing the green on every putt, consulting with his caddie, etc. He should've been put on a clock or given a stroke penalty. Even the on course announcer Kay Cockerill , the Dottie Pepper of the Web tour, mentioned he was agonizingly deliberate to the point he was holding up his playing partners not to mention the groups behind him. Jaeger plays very quickly and was obviously clearly frustrated. Wise seemed oblivious to the whole situation while the camera kept catching Jaeger shaking his head no toward the kid. They were more than a hole behind the group ahead of them too. The tours really need to get serious about penalizing such slow players because, at least to me, watching agonizingly slow pace of play is not entertaining at all.

I haven't been able to find any video. The web.com twitter page has Wise's final birdie put, but cuts off right before the hand shake.

I do remember while they were hitting their approach shots on 18, one announcer said Jager should get used to it because it's just as slow on the PGA tour and Cockerill, I believe responded, yeah but they aren't this slow, he's taking an inordinate amount of time on every shot.

I think Berger's caddy was pulling the pin...for some reason...even though Rodgers was clearly off the green and it was his turn to hit.

....but that isn't the rule. Farthest away, which Berger's putt was, plays first no matter if the other player isn't on the green. Now, most of the time the guys concede and allow someone who is chipping to go first but that is by agreement.

I saw the putt and handshake video on instagram feed over the weekend so it was floating around social media. Jaeger's reaction after the handshake was classic. He just wanted to get the hell off the course...looked like he wanted to ring Wise's neck which is my usual reaction when idiots do that stuff in the group ahead. Definite meme material.
