His Versa model may still have the micro hinge insert. There isn't a really clear picture to see the insert as it still looks similar to the Versa insert at a distance even with the micro hinge.

Just in time for the red and black microhinge putter introductions, Phil goes to a smooth face putter. Wonder if it is an old putter from years ago as lead tape is covering OEM name (Ping, Yonex, Titleist?) Can't say he is reluctant to try new or different things. Loved when he changed his whole bag at the Ryder Cup.. "hey tiger look at my new clubs, partner"

You can tell it's not a Microhinge insert because in the semi-closeup it's all black with a white Odyssey swirl logo. That's a regular Versa insert.

Phil's putters always have a lot of offset and more loft than usual. He has a significant forward press in his stroke, and sort of "drags" the putter through.

A milled putter or non-insert is going to put more material behind the ball and make the ball come off "hotter" and faster. Think about the new Ping putters and their grooves, how they take more material away the closer to the middle you go. This is to slow down the ball speed in the correct places so that all of your off and on center hits go the same distance. The greens on Links courses are always slower than normal, because they have to account for potential winds drying them out and speeding them up.

 

Odds are Phil is testing maybe using a firmer putter so that he doesn't have to change anything in his stroke, the ball comes off faster, thus the roll he "sees in his head" can stay consistent without him feeling like he has to crush every putt hard.

Phil's putting is interesting, that's for dang sure. He likes to put a "draw" stroke / spin on his putts, which explains the style of putter used, the offset, and why he has the toe up in the air. The man's career has been world class, and he would be held in even higher regards if he wasn't playing in the same era of the GOAT, but man, even as a lefty that tinkers endlessly myself, he does make me wonder sometimes.. lol

You talking about the ping putters with the machine face milling pattern? Not machine as machined. But machine as in Dave billlings ? Sorry. Just felt the need to point out where that tech came from. Good on ping for noticing a good deal when they bought it.
